Can a $30 vintage Olympus lens outperform a modern kit lens? // Olympus OM G.Zuiko Auto-W

I recently became interested in lenses, but didn't want to spend a lot of money to get a new one. Enter vintage lenses: I picked up an Olympus lens - specifically, an Olympus OM G.Zuiko Auto-W 28mm f/3.5 wide-angle lens - on eBay for $30. In this video, I talk about how I disassembled and adapted the lens to fit on my modern Nikon DSLR. Then, I put it up against my Nikon 18-55mm kit lens in a side-by-side comparison. Trader Joe's version of Takis were involved in the making of this video.

Wow this is a little crazy. For 10 bucks you can get an adapter put it on a cannon DSLR no filing or fiddling required and it's way better than any kit lens that's for sure.

Good and informative review but 2:38 my dear smarty pant friend, can you please tell me Why on earth you didn't file that screw from the other end, shortening it for proper installation without decreasing/jeopardizing strength and integrity of hardware or actually using the screws that came with the adapter that was probably the right size?

Wow. That was complicated. Why not use a mirrorless camera? For example a Sony A7. Note. I use Olympus Om Zuiko lenses for stills myself.

On the lens cap comparison, I feel like the nikon have more contrast, but the very fine detail is better represented on the olympus. I say it bc on the very thin wear line on the M and P, the nikon seens more blurry and less defined. But the perspective of depth on the letters is greater on the nikon

I have and use a 24mm f/2 olympus om lens , good lens , and need to sell a lens - and a sony 28-70 3.5-5.6 oss - ok lens , i just think the oly 24mm is better , and i use it on a sony a72 - if you had a choice between which one to keep - which one would you keep.

I couldn’t find an adapter that I liked. I think one exists but I wanted to keep the project cheap

If you're using it full open, you'll never get a fully sharp image. It'll do as good as any kit lens (sometimes better), but these are performing much better around f/8. Also, the corner sharpness/CA is more pronounced in older lenses.

That’s true that most lenses don’t perform well full open, but the OM 28/3.5 is an exception. It’s an excellent performer at F3.5.... especially, when used on a crop sensor camera.

Interesting hack on an Olympus lens. But, you would be better off using a Nikon 28/3.5 or faster on a Nikon camera. I really like the Nikon 28mm F2! That OM 28/3.5 is an excellent bargain performer though. Especially, since it’s not multi coated like most modern lenses are. Olympus lenses adapt better and easier on Canon DSLR’s, if you don’t go mirrorless.
