I am very sad (even a few tears shed) for Green lantern state and knowing his chances were very slim. I know I was watching other vet channels do crazy things to save animals in situations like this, I know what you did was the best. I really appreshaite you sharing your family's personal struggle with facing the death and traumatic death of your animals. You teach your children an important lesson and you allow us to see how you teach them this, but you are also teaching us on the internet about the realities of death. Death is a very taboo topic in North America, I work as a Registered Nurse and I am constantly fighting death, thinking of ways to help the most dramatic cases. It is also so important to know that Death is inevitable and many times it is best to admit and face the reality that death is unavoidable. Thank you again for sharing the reality of death and that it is important to accept it and to provide the best quality of life you can at the very end. Green Lanter had his own open safe area where he could recover from the immediate trauma and was able to calm down and slowly accept his own death. Thank you again for always showing the reality and the hardships/struggles you and your family face living on a farm. It always helps me with the stress of living in a big city (Los Angeles) and gets to see a more raw lifestyle and the beauty of living with nature. Sending lots of love to your family and to your little boys and I am so proud of their response.

That poor duck. Watching this broke my heart so badly that I think this is going to take me a while to get over seeing that. Two things destroy me completely - defenseless chldren and animals in pain and suffering. Seeing Green Lantern's face mutilated like that... it just hurt to watch. They may not even be my ducks, but I am heartbroken right now. Webbie was such a beautiful girl, and Green Lantern definitely was a favorite. May both of them Rest In Peace. I seen this before. They can survive without beak, but the problem is, you have to nurse it for the rest of it life. There are mechanisms beak but it expensive.

We had a duck get attacked by a neighbors dog when I was a teenager. The dog bit off half of her beak and tongue. My mom took her to the vet and they cleaned up the end of the wound. She ate a watery mush of her food and water until it was fully healed. She did just fine with her half beak after that.

many birds do survive losing their beak, but they need help while they heal since it is an open wound where it hurts. syringe feeding is usually a go to when a bird looses their beak.

It's always sad when a predator gets a bird, we had our neighbors dogs come in and killed a total of 48 birds, a mixture of ducks, turkeys, and chickens. It was truly devastating to see half eaten still living birds.

My friend had chickens that got picked off 1 by 1 by Red Tailed Hawks and then a raccoon got into their hen house, tore most of them to pieces and left their remains all over the yard. The 3 that were left eventually also got picked off by hawks. My friend couldn't really do much about the hawks since they're protected, but he declared war on the raccoons.

I highly recommend having geese. Get something docile and a gander only. I raised 1 duck with 1 gander gosling and so far we haven't had any losses. We had an eagle going so hard after our birds it was terrible. Spike our goose does such a great job. The geese will just brood all summer and then if you have a pair the gander will want to protect her. 1 gander in your duck flock makes a big difference 🥺

I really like your channel and respect what you guys do. Our family raise ducks and chickens for eggs, meat, and tick control! We try to let them free range as much as possible. Unfortunately that means predators can be an issue. We have had ducks with injuries that have been bad and the best most human thing to do was put them down and save them from the pain. I personally would have put him down. That was a horrific injury. It brought tears to my eyes watching him try to drink and eat. It was heartbreaking!!!

I know it wasn't the opossum, they can't do damage the way Greenlandern was damaged. That was most likely a Raccoon or something more vicious. Opossums get a lot of bad wrap for other animals who've caused the problem.

They do make prosthetic beaks but A you cant usually get one in under 2 days... unless you own a 3d printer B there needs to be something there to attach to.

farming is tough business... i grew up on a farm and it taught me early on about responsibility but more importantly about the inevitability of loss. I remember growing up and having to do an at home amputation of a ducks leg because a snapping turtle got him. we had the help of a retired doctor neighbor... he lived for awhile, we tried to improvise a prosthetic.. but about 4 days later died. i have plenty of sob stories of farming but every farmer does

In this case I think you guys did the best you could’ve done. You can’t save every animal. It sucks. But it’s part of life. I’m proud of the boys for reacting in a mature way for such a young age. Foxes are a big problem during the day, especially down here in south Louisiana. Y’all need a Great Pyrenees, the only problem I’ve had with predators lately is hawks. A good box trap with cat or dog food, I can catch a raccoon or possum almost every night, I’ve actually stopped setting traps because it just gets tiresome. Always try to save a bird. When I was starting birds back in 2013 in 5th grade we’d have raccoons pull chickens, had one rooster ripped wing off, healed and he was fine, just couldn’t fly lol

Most time, ducks that end up like that, have to be made pets to survive and be specially fed. If it wasn't as bad as he was, it is possible for the animal to adjust or do a prosthetic.

I had three ducks die recently. We had four, frances, charlie, sonny, and cher. Sonny was the first to go, he was in his pen and something came up and tried to grab through the wire and we didn't see it until the next day. Second was charlie. Charlie and Frances were close. Frances raised Charlie who we got to give him some company. Charlie had mites on his feet and we didn't know it (he liked to hide his feet a lot), and went into a water puddle at night to relief we believe and the water froze making him immobile. Frances then got very depressed and quit eating and drinking. All we have is Cher now. We are thinking on bringing him in with our 6 chickens now that the rooster is gone (would attack me whenever I went into the pen). Is there any way that we could introduce Cher into there without the hens pecking at him too much or will we have to either deal with it or keep him away?

We do. We took our injured cat in when she got attacked because of the type of injury. We took. the goose in because of the type of injury. Our vet could not have done anything for a missing beak other than tell us to put him down and we wanted to see him recover.

I honestly thought he was getting food in his mouth. But he wouldn’t die in a day without food. He would only die that quickly if he wasn’t getting enough water. I thought he was getting some, but it seems that he wasn’t.

I’m assuming you killed the opossum. The opossum may or may not have been the predator. It certainly went for the bait but then it’s winter any hungry animal would. That was not a humane trap. I’m very sorry for the loss of your duck. But I’m sad that the wild animal had to die as well.

I would guess fox as well (Opossums hunt at night, your culprit is a day hunter, right?) maybe reconsider keeping ducks by the pond through the winter. You're really taking a huge risk putting the endangered ducks right where 2 have been killed. Best of luck!!

I've had a animal suffer it was a cat his name was cleo he was a old cat I knew his time would come soon but not this early, he got attacked by two dogs, his kidney was completely destroyed, and we didn't know he was hurt he had no food and water for like 2 days because he would stay outside for a long time, in cat years he was about 100 years old he was a good cat, then one day he was in the neghbors yard and we took him to the vet and we had to put him down. Uh I have tears in my eyes, well thats my story.

I have a chicken that when it was 3 months old it peck half of her beaks off (top and bottem) but it was no where near as bad as this. It was a clean straight break, no blood. It must of peck a rock or got it caught on something metal. Because it was so young at the time it eventually grew most of it back. By 6 months unless you were looking for it you'd never know it was once missing half its beaks. Sorry to hear about green lantern.

What about introducing a guard goose into the duck flock? Apparently, they work great for any predator smaller than a fox. They'll also honk loudly when they are in danger, so you should be alerted of the predator. I do think you will need to get the goose used to the dog if you get one.

From an experience from my aunt is that if there is a male in the flock the animal will go for the male to harm it because when the male is down the animal that means harm to the flock has free rome of the flock my aunt lost almost her whole flock but 1 female when the 2 males were killed by a possum.

Yo, my family had a similar thing happen to a goose. Only his top bill was ripped off, so he could still eat. In the end he got a 3d printed one. He ended up in the news as bruce the goose. With that Sayed: so sad about your duck. I feel so sad watching this video.

Possums are horrid animals that can absolutely tear a small duck to shreds just like that. We had a few take out some of our rabbits When I was a kid.

We actually had a duck crash into our yard with a broken beak. Animal control came and said they had to put it down :( Edit: This video is actually almost exactly what the duck looked like. Beak shattered, tongue was hanging out. Poor little thing

Yeah.. that looks like a Fox's handiwork. A Possum doesn't have the strength to bite off heads or beaks, and they tend to hunt at night. So I'd say keep a close watch out. Since it's still out there and knows there are ducks. I'd also be very careful of your chickens too.

Yeah I was thinking they have the strength they eat road kill so I'd think they could eat bones or beak. They have more teeth than any mammals also. This is so sad. I don't think that possum could have caught, much less bitten off the head off two ducks it was chasing around outside. I think he was just an unlucky interloper after the event. Chickens have got a much smaller head than ducks, and a much less impressive bill. To have torn off a duck's bill at the hallway point I'm thinking the attacker had to be at least as big as a mink.

Yes, it is risky, considering the pond was never predator proof aside from some netting. Gotta say, they are pretty brave to even put those ducks at a largely unprotected natural pond. I would at least try to putting off doing that until they have good form of protection like actual fencing, either around the pond or general farm surrounding. Added to that is them decided to bring more ducks, not just any ducks but the endangered, expensive hookbill ducks at that. Doesn't look like they are making good decision there.

@@poprocksssss1114 i agree I also have never heard of a opossum killing an animal ive caught them in my coop but they only steal the eggs.

@@nazrin992 i agree that why on earth risk the expensive endangered hookbills when they dont know for sure that the killer is gone ! I would say it was a fox as they decapitate ducks or chickens and try and get another . Winter time as well with pond being frozen seems a bad decision here ,
