If you think about it, during the Civil War they used percussion muskets and even some flintlocks were pressed into service, and at the same time there were some guys using the newfangled fully enclosed metallic cartridge, all in the same 4 year time frame. That's fricken nuts when you think about it!

Think of how different the war would have been if these were introduced
@freman007
@freman007 6 ай бұрын
@@Lkdhhabv It would have turned out the same way. The Union went with weapons that could be made immediately, not pinning their hopes on a rifle/carbine that wouldn't be available for a year or more. When Spencer made his pitch to the Army he didn't even have a factory. The Union won, not because of the genius of its generals (if anything the great generals returned to the South) nor the courage of its troops (in that virtue no fault could be found on either side). The Union won because it was industrialized, and the mass production of equipment swamped the Confederacy. The Confederacy had to rely on equipment bought from Europe, which was subject to blockades, or small "fly by night" companies that often would take thousands in Confederate gold, then deliver a handful of barely functional guns, or nothing at all. Industrialization, and mass production, is basically how the US has won every war that it actually won. Germany would have struggled to win against the production capacity of the Allied powers, even before America joined the fight. After it did, victory was a forgone conclusion, the only question being how many men (and children) the Germans were willing to lose before surrendering. The same with Japan.

While I think these build outs and mods are pretty great, for me , besides aesthetics , the best thing about a stock lever gun is the ergonomics . You can grab it like a big stick and run full tilt and it's not awkward at all and then pull it up for a snap shot . I got a Marlin 30 -30 with a buttstock shell holder on it that's my main go-to rifle. It's got the side gate for easy top-off so I'm all set for my needs. But whatever type you go with they are just FUN to shoot. I actually get bored fast with my SA rifles but my lever's and bolt's are always a good time .
@tortol4847
@tortol4847 6 ай бұрын
These builds defeat the purpose of a lever action. Take a lightweight/slim rifle, throw 4 lbs of crap on it, and now youve got a 10-11 lb bulky monstrosity. At that point just get an AR in 450 bushmaster. Personally i think the ranger point stuff looks hideous.

I do think .45-70s have one good combat use other than hunting/dangerous animal defense. It was originally a black powder cartridge, so you could reload it with black powder in a TEOTWAWKI scenario. For the first year or two, everybody would still have smokeless ammo for their ARs and whatnot, but after that, you will be king of the hill. Assuming you can actually make your own black powder. You'll also need to be able to make primers, which basically means you need to be a chemist or have a friend who is a chemist.
@alanw1775
@alanw1775 6 ай бұрын
Then, maybe muzzleloader is the most self sustainable. My grandpa back in the day, made his own percussion caps for his homemade smoothbore muzzleloader. He was in rural china, where they cant have guns. The barrel was made by a coppersmith, blackpowder was used for mining so it was common. The primers were some sulfur compound. So, muzzleloader is the most self sufficient, but cartridge guns are far superior weapons..
@gunsgalore7571
@gunsgalore7571 6 ай бұрын
@@alanw1775 Right. I agree think that, eventually, presuming the TEOTWAWKI scenario persists for the foreseeable future, you will eventually have to use muzzleloaders, no way around that, and of course bows. And I have to say, that is awesome how your grandpa was able to make percussion caps. Those are the kinds of skills we have to keep alive.

Yeah, it was for hunting, which he loved. Unfortunately, a while after he stopped hunting, the commies confiscated it sometime in the 70s. But yeah all you would need is caps, black powder, lead, and a thing to cast bullets.

If anything, the "guns that won the West" would probably be the Winchester 1886 in 45-70 Government and the Colt Single Action Army. Me and dad used to shoot wood chucks out my upstairs bedroom window back in the 90s. We always used his model 94 Winchester chambered in 7-30 waters which was a sick lever action. When he gave it to me to keep, I immediately ripped the scope off and just ran the iron sights. It's been a good deer rifle as well. It has put a lot of doe in our freezer over the year's. It's right up there with my polish type 3 ak, they don't come out much and they get wiped down once a month...

Being a lefty and spending a lot of time roaming the Foothills and mountains of the Alberta Rockies on horseback, I love lever actions. They are the perfect rifle for a scabbard. I really like my Marlin 45/70 Trapper but my favourite is a toss up between my Winchester 30/30 and my .303 Savage.

Lever guns are flat-out cool. Even Col. Cooper, Gunsite founder and Warrior/philosopher, recommended the levergun to denizens of NY City, dubbing it the "Brooklyn Special". The slim compactness and power of a Win. 94 in .30-30 helped set his criteria for the Scout rifle concept....44s and .45s are great, but Mike, check out the external ballistics on an 18 to 20 inch barreled .357 magnum. She punches well above her weight class, and I love being able to feed your rifle and sidearm out of the same box of cartridges, with better power than 9 mm.....

@@fujimi715 they are far from obsolete. They are in common use and still made to this day. Many argue the model 94 in 30-30 is the most in use deer rifle in America. The sales volume of 30-30 ammo certainly supports the claim.

Agreed, did the same for my .357 Henry X, mainly for the ergonomics, and flexibility. Also added MI's ghost ring sight with a t1/t2 footprint that allows raised irons (suppressor compatible) with increased site radius, at 1/3 co-witness to a red dot.

@@JD-tn5lzAs someone who owns a new ruger made marlin and a couple henrys... marlin is the better brand hands down. Henrys are obnoxiously heavy. My x model 357 is 7.5 lbs with nothing on it. The bluing on the henry is... acceptable. The action doesnt feel as "tight" as the marlin. The tube load design also reduces mag capacity. Henrys typically hold 1 less in the tube compared to similar models of other brands. A 21 inch henry 45-70 holds 5 rounds in the tube whereas an 18 inch marlin holds 6. Not a huge deal but something worth noting.
