I realise many people think Muslims and Christians can easily marry, and in saying this, they are coming from a nice, loving place. I do feel, however, that many, many people do not understand the big difference between a very honest assessment of interfaith marriage and it's challenges, VS bigotry. I realise we want all of the "warm and fuzzy" responses and feelings in response to such an experiment. However, in the spirit of GENUINELY combatting existing negative stereotyping of certain faiths, (as well as all of the "pre-judging" people do from the outskirts looking in at an inter-faith couple walking hand-in-hand down the street); we would need to maturely and openly examine what aspects/differences might (if any) create challenges in such a relationship in REAL life first, as opposed to "REEL" life. Let's use the example of a Christian Woman marrying a Muslim Male. I logistically couldn't list all of the many FUNDAMENTAL differences between Islam _ Christianity, in one KZbin comment. So I won't attempt that. Instead for the sake of time, I'll choose possibly the top 3 fundamental differences between the 2 faiths, that I feel would cause major friction for an inter-faith couple. 1) PROMISE TO RAISE KIDS IN THE FAITH BOTH Christians and Muslims give their word to their respective Priests and Imam's during the marriage ceremony, to raise their children in THAT domicile faith! For genuinely practising Christians and Muslims; THIS is a huge problem, as both individually very seriously commit to instill into their children, their own respective set of religious doctrines. So serious are such commitments to eg Muslims, that an entire Muslim community have been known to "shun" a fellow Muslim who inter-faith marries, let alone compromises the new, younger generation of followers of Prophet Muhammad, by allowing their kids to choose the other parent's faith instead! 2) SCRIPTURE STATES IT'S WRONG TO MIX? Within the Christian scripture; one is taught that it is okay to marry a non-Christian for the purposes of bringing that person to Christ. "For that reason, the two shall leave their father and mother... and the two shall become one" says the Bible. Therefore, as "one" shall a couple go to church to worship, as "one" they will pray together, as "one" they will jointly raise their children, and as "one" they will follow the Christian way of life, which is to try to follow Jesus Christ in all ways. This "oneness" is immediately compromised for a practising Christian, when her husband, out of fear of committing "shirk" (or associating anything with Allah, eg the Christian Trinity belief) won't or can't join her in ANY of the aforementioned activities as a couple! A Muslim husband follows the teachings of Muhammad from the Qur'an; namely, that he is NOT supposed to even really mix with a "non-believer" let alone marry her! Just a few of the verses within the Qur'an that might be problematic for them as a couple, include: "kill the unbeliever wherever you find them" "strike them at their necks" "until they surrender and say that there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad his final messenger" "...or until they pay the Jizyah (unbelievers tax)" Just considering both faiths scriptural differences alone; the challenges seem insurmountable! 3) CULTURAL AND LEGAL DIFFERENCES Christianity can be practised separately to the laws of the country one lives in. For example, Jesus Himself tells the people to "let what is Caesar's remain Caesar's, and what is the Father's (God) remain His" clearly defining the need to keep Church and State separate, and recognising a person's legal responsibility to it's ruler. Contrary to this; Islam is not simply a "religion" that is separate from the law of the land. In fact, Islam is a complex system of Government, Social structure (including very particular customs)& Religious Beliefs, all rolled into one. This means everything from how a Muslim should bathe, dress and grow facial hair, right through to only taking or providing "interest-free" loans, is covered in the teachings of Prophet Muhammad in the Qur'an and some Hadiths. For the Christian wife; if she had lived in the West under democratic rule, she may only feel these huge differences in the home, or in certain social settings. Worst case scenario for a Muslim female attempting to even date a non-Muslim man, sadly, has resulted in death via "honour killings" ... a very real, physically dangerous part of "inter faith" Muslim/Christian marriage! However, should she ever live in, or even just visit a majority Muslim country that is under the rule of the Islamic Sharia Law; everything from the value of her testimony as a female being worth half that of a man (which, depending upon whether following Sharia Law it not, can sadly have fatal consequences) the amount of skin she could show in public, her altered "rights" as a woman legally to even be in he same room alone with a man other than her husband, right through to her dramatically lessened rights over the custody of her kids should they divorce... all of it, altered and get her rights lessened dramatically if she is accustomed to living under a democracy. I could go on and on describing the many obstacles that this interfaith Muslim/Christian married couple would inevitably face; however, imagine simply having to face the huge social and religious customary differences like how a Christian buries their dead, verses how a Muslim does, or the social and political freedoms afforded in a predominantly Christian, democratic country, to those of ones Muslim partner, should the family ever move to a "majority Muslim" Sharia country. Although the above points I am making may seem somewhat drawn-out and lengthy for such a seemingly benign experiment as yours; however, I genuinely believe that for true "tolerance" to prevail, we as a society must first BE REAL and TOTALLY HONEST about the very real differences in our religious practice. Because, too many times I have heard the warm and fuzzy, well-meaning statement: "Hey, Muslims and Christians both worship the SAME God, so why shouldn't they marry" etc. That statement, besides being way too simplistic and in my opinion, incorrect; does NOT deal with the very real challenges that WILL arise if mixing both religions in marriage, due to even the everyday aspects that greatly differ in both faiths practice's. Honesty is the key, not just saying "Oh, how lovely" just to appear politically correct and super "tolerant"! I say this out of love and in the hope that one day those differences may not be so many.

Asalam alaykum. Unfortunately, this is so VERY true that men living in Muslim countries are doing this. I am a Muslim woman living in USA and I have witnessed it myself. What saddens me about this is, these men are self proclaimed Muslims because they're born into a self proclaimed Muslim Arab family, but this is NOT Muslim teachings, characteristics or behavior. I have personally been approached by so called Arab Muslim men in USA when my intention is purely halal nikah for the sake of completing half of my deen. I have been told that because I'm not Arab, his family could never be told about me . I have been vulgarly solicited in conversation for very haram behavior. People , practicing Muslim and respectful non Muslims , WAKE UP and stop confusing practicing Muslims in pure Islamic character and behavior with hypocrital so called self proclaimed Muslims who do these things. The majority of those hypocrites don't even know the Qur'an, but what, because they're Arab and born into a so called Muslim family, they think that makes them Muslim. Insha Allah, may Allah the Almighty guide and protect the Ummah away from these puppets of shaytan , Ameen.

If you think about the Quran and the Sunnah, you will find that in one of them there is the story of the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad (may peace and blessings be upon him). She was married to a non Muslim man before a surah of the Quran (that prohibits Muslim women from marrying non Muslim men) came down and when this Surah came down she had to leave her husband because he was a non Muslim. Later on, a few years passed by and he decided to convert to Islam (because he wanted to and not because someone obliged him to do it). After he converted to Islam, he married her again and they did it respecting what the Quran prescribed. In this case I gave you the example of a married woman, but I think that it also applies to muslim men. This is what I know and what I think I'm not a scholar so I say Allahu A'lam (only God knows),but if you have this doubt you can ask a scholar, an imam or someone who is knowledgeable about Islam and see what they tell you. May Allah make it easy for you and guide you the straight path my brother.

@@lapashonaconnerabdulraheem1993 This is what an Imam from your religion is ACTUALLY teaching behind closed doors at his mosque about a Muslim man marrying a woman “of the book” (a Christian or Jew) “A realistic look at marriage to women of the People of the Book But marriage to women of the People of the Book leads to a great deal of mischief and trouble, such as: He may have to be courteous to this wife of his at the expense of his religion, especially if she is “very committed” to her own religion. This may mean that she will hang up crosses and go to the church, and the children will not be safe in this environment. She is not going to wash properly after finishing her period, or tell him not to have intercourse with her when she is menstruating; she is going to make him do something that is wrong according to shari’ah and cause him physical harm. He is going to be put in an embarrassing situation because of her careless attitude concerning dress and her mixing with men and speaking to them. The states and governments of these women of the Book will be on their side and will give them custody of the children if differences arise and divorce takes place. This will cause these children to be lost and to fall into kufr. Such cases are too well known to need mentioning here and too many to count. It may be said: Marriage to a Christian is not ideal as the likelihood of the children becoming Christian is high.. You must look for one who is religiously committed, if you want a sound marriage. Forget about the people of kufr and beware of marrying them, for that will lead to a lot of evil. The children of such a marriage will not be guided; they will swell the ranks of evildoers.”

The example that you gave about a Muslim man marrying a non-Muslim women for the wrong intention is a very a weak and fallible mainly because instead of condemning the actions of the man, you were justifying why interfaith marriage are never going to work. In Islam, a man is not allowed to treat a women in the way that you described and you should of concentrated on spreading that message across instead. Also, in Islam there is no compulsion in religion (There is no compulsion in religion” [al-Baqarah 2:256]) and one cannot enforce their beliefs on their children. We as parents can teach children about our religious beliefs and morals. But at the end, children choose what are their beliefs because faith is something that emerges within the heart an is not enforced upon.

If she converts to Islam you can marry her. Allah says: “Do not marry idolatresses (al mushrikāt) till they believe; and certainly a believing maid is better than an idolatress even though she would please you; and do not marry idolaters (al Mushrikīn) till they believe (hata yūminū), and certainly a believing slave is better than an idolater, even though he would please you. These invite to the Fire, and Allah invites to the Garden and to forgiveness by His grace, and makes clear His revelations to mankind so that they may remember.”Qur’an 2:221 - This day [all] good foods have been made lawful, and the food of those who were given the Scripture is lawful for you and your food is lawful for them. And [lawful in marriage are] chaste women from among the believers and chaste women from among those who were given the Scripture before you, when you have given them their due compensation, desiring chastity, not unlawful sexual intercourse or taking [secret] lovers. (Al-Ma'idah, 5).

If she's from Ahlu al Kitab (that is to say Muslim, Christian or Jew) then you can marry her. But keep in mind that she has to follow the authentic books of her religion not the ones that were changed over time, like the Church did with their scriptures. This day [all] good foods have been made lawful, and the food of those who were given the Scripture is lawful for you and your food is lawful for them. And [lawful in marriage are] chaste women from among the believers and chaste women from among those who were given the Scripture before you, when you have given them their due compensation, desiring chastity, not unlawful sexual intercourse or taking [secret] lovers. I cannot agree more. I was in this exact situation. I married a Christian woman. We'd been together for 15 yrs. It was originally agreed upon that the kids will follow Islam - albeit verbally. Then when we got closer to the time, she suggested that the child should follow both faiths. I agreed. Then when we got even closer, she suggested that the kids should not be indoctrinated into any faith and should live as an atheist. That's when I decided to bow out - respectfully. The point is, i respected her faith, objections and suggestions, I compromised yet the goal posts continuously shifted. I was better off doing the non-muslim thing living in sin, hey christians?

@@mhasifghaz4121 children do not follow their father's anything. Children spend most of their time with their mothers, hence, they are influenced mostly by their mothers. I have never seen a family where fathers played the main role of teaching and nurturing. If she is a non-Muslims and her husband is a Muslim, he may try to teach her about Islam but she can refuse to learn and let her children learn about Islam. Since there is no compulsion in Islam, he can't in any way force them to accept anything about Islam and since the mother's status is higher than a father's in Islam, the children can refuse to listen too. She is a non-Muslim, why would she care if you role in Islam is being the protector of your family.

I start understanding the mentality of Muslims. I can't marry a Muslim till I become one like them.I think Is a bit selfish to obligate somebody to believe in different thing.Once why an Christian or a Jewish are allowed to marry a Muslim? It's just because them believe is true and is harder to penetrate?I have the same problem between me and my boyfriend. I am an Christian Orthodox and hi is an Muslim and wen you talk about future (marriage and kids)Is something what actually they putting you in the situation to choose for your future kids if you want to live a happy life together. It's like my believe is nothing to him.Being a Christian Orthodox for me is proved I believe in the true God and I don't know if somebody can change my saviour from Evil,I don't think soo. I understand now why we are valuable to them like a soul because we believe. I've seen also lot of proves Evil want the people who believe and not the non believers because they are hard to get to worship him, they know about the true God more then anyone. I just think about all the stories wen a women marry a Muslim in his country, we're you like a female you will not have any rights not even to believe in what you believe because if you will do so ,they will try to get that out of your mind in any possible way!I start understanding they all think the same just because they was teach to don't listen to them heart and to listen to them religion. Me like an Christian Orthodox I was teach to love no matter what is in other people's opinion.Jesus teach us to sacrifice ourselves to others and not to sacrifice others for our good.I will not having any benefit sacrifice myself or my future kids to a person or an religion I don't believe in and also I will not send my kids in to die.Why God is punishing us?because we forgot to love the others for what they are being selfish you will be never close to the gate's of Heaven.

A true Christian woman is a person who has encountered God and been spiritually transformed by God's power. She has been given a new heart and New Spirit to obey Him. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth guides her decision making.... Therefore, she would never marry an unbeliever, which the Word of God says follows the Spirit of disobedience. So, interfaith marriage is not an option nor is conversion out of the faith because God guides the Christian woman daily. -Blessings from Tajji in Tanzania

I’m a Christian woman who’s in love with a Muslim man. I really love him and I want to marry him at some point. Islam is a beautiful religion and I respect it, but when it comes to mixed marriages, children have the right to choose the religion. I get that their father is Muslim, but their mother is Christian. We matter too. It’s kinda unfair to have to raise children differently from how you’ve been raised. I’m honestly overthinking it now. Our parents don’t agree with idea of us being together and I want to build my career in a perspective country. We really love each other, I can’t live without him. But what do you think, is it worth fighting?

Obedience is what God expects from His children. The Word of God is clear that Christians are not to marry Muslims or be yoked with unbelievers in other ways as well. When the Word is disobeyed then the consequences of that disobedience occurs. Marriage is a covenant between you, your significant other and God. To marry an unbeliever is to marry a person with a different spirit who follows a different God. Scripture is clear: Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial ? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.” Therefore, “Come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.” And, “I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.” -Blessings from Tajji in Tanzania
