I think he meant a scenario in which she wasn't being guided, and she basically said she couldn't replicate it even though she had just done it. The autopilot, with detailed instructions, doesn't seem insurmountable. As Joe said, the hardest part for a non-pilot would simply be figuring out how to work the radios, find the correct frequency, and actually getting someone to guide you through all of these dozens of steps before something goes very, very wrong. I think if someone has some knowledge of comms, or at least knows the guard frequency is 121.5 (I know that and I'm not a pilot) and how to change the radio frequency (I'm familiar with marine radios, so that's a start) and press to confirm it, they might have a chance. But LOTS of things have to align in place for this to happen. Also, ATCs aren't necessarily pilots - nor would they be familiar with whatever random type of aircraft you're flying around in. They'd have to take time finding a pilot with the specific type rating to guide you through the steps even if you DID manage to raise ATC on the radio.

Actually, one of the reason she finds it so hard was that he wasn't good at all. First, when you start, you should always define a point of reference that SHE can identify quickly. ''Karen, i am gonna ask you to divide the controls you see in four row. The first one is right under the WINDOWS, and start with a button that say 'VLS'. do you see that?' 'ok, the second one is our blue tv screen right underneath that row, do you see that?' 'ok, now the third one contains....' and so on. Second, he should never use jumba-gumba abreviation she have no clue about unless he call the position of it first! You don't say something like 'now i am gonna ask you to turn the rlstr to the right until it says dtrcr...' But rather you say 'to the right of the blue screen, on our second row, there is a button that says 'rlstr'. Find that one.' and so on... Second, he talks too softly, to the point it was annoying to her i think. That's my honest opinion.

@dwoodkamp45505 жыл бұрын
@@chrizizdaman it is possible if they send a experienced pilot to the airport tower to connect with you on the radio. There is a story on KZbin called "Mayday the passenger who landed a plane. It's a small Cesna plane where the pilot passed out on a heart attack and the one passenger next to him had absolute no flight experience but he managed to put the plane down safely without a automatic landing system just by voice guidance from the tower. So technically i think it would be possible to land an passenger plane with a automatic landing system as long as you keep your cool.
@MrBajaJunky5 жыл бұрын
@@chrizizdaman In that case they should have tested it without a pilot sitting behind her. I mean the way they did it was pretty much designed as the case where a passenger is guided per radio over the tower. However, it could be a pretty hard task figuring out how this communication system works. If the tower can speak to the pilot without him pushing a button they could in this case continously tell whats to do in order to speak back. I'm not sure about this point but in any case the conclusion doesn't fit the video very well.
@chrizizdaman5 жыл бұрын
D woodkamp I am not saying it’s impossible I just think it’s very unlikely. If they were to make communication with ATC and be connected to someone, this person would have to have knowledge of the exact plane the passenger is piloting. I just think there are a lot of variables that could happen in a real world scenario to make it quite challenging. Such as communication, operation of the airplanes controls, and even outside factors such as weather. Plus it would be a very stressful situation so the person would have to be very good under pressure. Most airplanes now communicate with the airports computer systems and are guided in for the most part so it’s definitely plausible.

In the documentary (search for "Mayday - The passenger who landed a plane") he is complimented not only on his flying skills but also on his airmanship as throughout the nightmare he constantly displays regard for others (like wanting to fly away from towns as to not kill others when he crashes) by the crew of the onlooking air force SAR helicopter they called to "assist" (aka pick up the pieces, they were sure) him. Oh, did I mention that he was 77 at the time and had been flying (as a passenger in a tiny aircraft) for hours before it even began? The dude is a LEGEND.

At about 10:30 I realized it's fake, because the landing gear always gets stuck in the movies. She would have had to open a hatch in the toilet and crawl down through a series of tunnels in the plane. Foiling and knocking out a terrorist that was sabotaging the plane. And then right before the plane touches down. She finds the crank and just in time moves the landing gear down. Only after saving a puppy that is almost crushed by loose baggage and dismantling a bomb set to explode by the terrorists.

That could work both ways, I get extremely sharpened in a LoD situation while someone else would turn into limbo mode. Definitely. However, he mentioned at the end it took 20 minutes to get her to push the correct button to establish two-way comms. So she was lost in the sauce for 20 minutes just trying to figure out how to get a conversation going with ATC. 20 minutes is a long time. That being said, if a passenger could get comms up in the first 2-5 minutes AND the plane had plenty of altitude, it's not actually a very dangerous situation.

As an airline pilot myself, I DO think it’s possible. Especially in an airbus. I think the toughest part would be the communications issues you discussed at the end of the video. If the person in the cockpit can’t get a transmission out, then the controller doesn’t even know there’s a person there. They just assume the aircraft is NORDO. But if for some reason radio communications could be established, I think it could be done. I applaud your experiment, and your effort, but I don’t think that you were talking to her with the correct phraseology, and vocabulary that would be most effective and efficient in talking someone through that, with zero aviation experience. You were saying button when you were talking about a knob. You were asking her to find a panel by telling her it had numbers and buttons. That’s a bit unspecific, given the environment. For us, it’s a glare shield, but for the layman, it’d be a dash board. I would have told her, “the panel in the center, up on the dashboard.” Also, as pointed out by others, she doesn’t know what a localizer or an ILS is. So why are you overwhelming her even further with irrelevant acronyms and information? The list goes on, but you get the point. The airbus is extremely automated and quite user friendly. With enough fuel, delay vectors, a long final, and the right person talking them down, I think it’s very doable.

John, I hope you can still answer this despite it being many months later but… assuming that for the moment the plane is okay because it has fuel and autopilot is keeping the plane steady and level, could a passenger get enough information from the cabin crew? Would they at least know the plane’s call sign or which frequencies to use? Would there be any kind of way to call an airport? Otherwise as someone who knows very little about aviation I’d seriously consider getting my phone out and either googling to see if it would throw up any numbers that might actually get me through to an airport or dial the emergency number of whatever country I’m flying over, say 999 for the UK or 911 for the US and hope they can get some help before I either fly the behemoth into a mountain or run out of fuel. 🤔

On the other hand, the schock could lead to a very calm and stringent reaction. You are so concentrated on the task of following every instruction and give feedback what is happening, you block out any disturbing things around you. I guess I don't ever want to test my claim, but it could work out. And even a small chance of landing on an airport, perhaps not really smooth or not even with a reusable plane after your landing, is better than just crashing somewhere into the ground.

Love your videos, Capt Joe! About this one, I noticed that sometimes the visual feedback you had, from actually being able to see what she was doing, avoided a lot of miscommunication and unknown states. It would be really cool to do it again with you in another room to simulate an ATC in the tower or a support pilot in a grounded aircraft; both with no visual indication of what she is doing or if she has actually executed the commands properly :) Keep up the videos!!
@vladsnape64087 жыл бұрын
I agree with Marcelo - a proper simulation of ATC providing the instructions, without ATC seeing what the pilot is actually doing, would be an even better video. I LOL'd at 3:50 when you said "there is a long little display with numbers in it and has dials" - there are many displays with numbers and dials! Getting a non-pilot finding the right displays, dials, controls etc. would be a major challenge in reality, if the person providing the instructions does not see what the "pilot" is doing. The chance of accidentally using the wrong dial or control is probably high.
@BaronKsatria7 жыл бұрын
Mythbuster did it. The pressure on the ATC was real.

Also another one -- can a flight attendant land a plane? Also, I think certain detail-oriented passengers could land a plane, *but* only once initial communication has been established. There's really no way to do it unless you've already gotten familiar with the controls, so you need either previous experience (maybe in a sim?) or someone on board who can put you through to ATC in time to do enough practice runs, and then it's still not a guarantee, of course. How to make this easier: color-code and label the control groups in the cockpit?
@joelcurcio14037 жыл бұрын
I agree with the above comment and also would like to note this happened with a guy on a smaller twin engine chartered plane after the pilot died from a heart attack. I believe the passenger had experience flying planes but never that plane. If I remember correctly the biggest issue was getting someone on the radio who had a very good knowledge of that planes flight controls. This video is also making that assumption, that atc knows the flight controls perfectly. The guy I mentioned above survived but listening to the recording is even pretty stressful.
@matt09ward7 жыл бұрын

As a former USAF C-5 crew chief, if I had help from an ATC that was as smooth Capt. Joe, I think it would be reasonable possible in gokd weather. Those flight panels and controls were so much easier to navigate than the C-5's old analog indicators. I got out before the C-5M program, so I don't know what the new flight controls look like.

If I am ever on a plane and someone says “can anyone here land a plane? The pilot is unconscious” As long as no one else volunteers you may as well go for it.
