Can a slingshot hit harder than handguns? The Shootout.

Only in America :)
Wrist braced slingshots are illegal in Germany, and in several other countries too. But of course The Slingshot Channel must also cover this potentially strongest type of a rubber powered hand shooter! Therefore, the team went to Greenville, South Carolina, USA, in order to do things that would be a no-no in our German headquarters.
The ugly, clumsy, but very effective model shown in this video is based on a three ft long wooden plank, a handle, a forearm rest and a fork made from two round rods. This design protects the shooting hand and allows crazy amounts of rubber. With 195 cm of a draw length, this slingshot shoots the 1" steel ball at 206,8 fps (63 m/s), making it the strongest handheld one man operated slingshot ever shown on all of KZbin.
The momentum achievable by this record slingshot is -- in theory -- higher than the value most handguns can achieve. The .22, the 9mm, even the 357 SIG and the famous .45 ACP all have momentum lower values. Only the mighty .44 Magnum outperforms the slingshot, at least on paper.
But is it true? Can it be for real? This video puts that theory to a test. A large, heavy pendulum with a thick rubber mat in front of a steel plate is the proper test device. See how the handgus fare against the slingshot! You will be amazed by the outcome.
NOTE: Please don't get us wrong -- handguns achieve far higher energy levels and also the pressure per square inch is a lot higher. In terms of penetration, a slingshot has little chance against guns. We are NOT degrading guns whatsover. But for the sheer destruction, a slingshot is really good.

Well, if we are going to get all technical, I'd say they are measuring the kinetic energy of the projectile by observing a change in the potential energy of the pendulum.

Fredrik Wahlgren they can both be measured as they use the same variables of mass and velocity. But momentum is easier to estimate by eye because it is linear, whereas energy is exponential.

Sure, but what I was getting at was that I believe (from how they talk about it) that the mental model they have of the physics happening in these tests are closer to a change in energies rather than a change in momentum. Also I think this is it turn based on is that humans seem to have much a more intuitive understanding of how the conversion of energies (in particular motion to heat, motion to elevation and the reverse of these, as in this case), as compared to a good intuition of momentum (watch Veritasiums video "bullet block experiment" for part of my reason for this). Long story short, I believe what they are actually *thinking* about is a conversion of energy, but they confuse it with change in momentum (which of course is connected, but not the same). I could be wrong of course! :)

+Fredrik Wahlgren what you say is not entirely correct because some (or all) of the projectiles didn't stay connected to the target. therefore what was happening was an elastic impact and what they measured was momentum. not the kinetic energy of the projectile, which retained some of it after separating

Swords and knives are good melee weapons, but you don't want to come that close to a highly infectious aggressive monster. You need ranged weapons. Silenced .22s as long as there is ammo, but slingshots are actually a viable alternative IF you have the skills.

I'll take the .22 as a defense weapon over the slingshot any day. Hitting a target reliably is important and a slingshot would take a lot of skill and a ton of reload time between each round launched. Not that I wouldn't take something bigger first. A .22 isn't good enough to definitely stop an assailant with a gun or even most handheld weapons if they're within 20 ft of you. They'll most likely not get hit good enough and still be able to murder you with a knife. The .22 wouldn't be near as deadly as a knife up close. But, if a slingshot is all you have and you have enough skill to hit a rabbit on the run you might be able to hit and weaken them a little. Be extremely difficult for even the most skilled person to hit a person in a vital area while they're running after you with a slingshot. If the attacker is very close it really doesn't seem like it would be hardly usable at all to hit where you'd need to. You're talking some lifetime devotion of skill to even have a mediocre chance. An attacker with a knife can often overcome a person with a handgun even if they're within 10 ft of each other. Slingshot is definitely like a last resort and probably better have a knife really handy too in case they get closer. Slingshot has plenty power if it was semi auto with ten or 20 rounds. Don't forget that a high percentage of these crazy robbers & killers have a high chance of being doped up in Meth.

That slingshot is badass but your experiment had a major flaw. When bullets strike hard targets such as steel they fragment. A good portion of kinetic energy is lost due to shrapnel. On the other hand a steel ball that is shot from a sling shot imparts all of its energy into the target. This skewed your results. A more accurate test would be to use a chronograph and measure the velocity of all projectiles. Then by using their mass you could find the exact kinetic energy involved.

No it isn't. Ballistic gel tests show about a 10% difference in cavitation between 9mm and 357 sig. 9mm +P, which is still less expensive than 357 sig sometimes actually outperforms it. If you need something "a lot more significant", that is what long guns are for.

The 357sig is a much hotter round than the 9mm. Ignoring factory loads which tend to be on the light / underpowered side, handloaders can push the 357sig past 550fpe. That is a pretty powerful pill, a faster and flatter load. The 357sig would have more stopping power than a 9mm in theory, but it is pretty much a dead heat between the two in terms of effectiveness in stopping at attacker. Most attackers are not sumo wrestlers. The same argument circles around the 40S&W and 10mm. There is a reason outside of ammo cost why the 357sig and 10mm trails the big three pistol calibers. The extra speed / fpe of these rounds produces heavier recoil. The 357sig actually recoils more than a 45.

This is typically a result of the ammo manufacturer and what technology or system they are imparting in their ammunition in order to get the projectile to deliver its energy. What you're talking about is the question between striking someone with a 2x4 vs a katana. Even if the 2x4 is significantly heavier, and even moving the same speed, it will not be as damaging as the katana.

George I'm way late to the party on this one but I just have to ask couldn't one just take a slingshot with a bigger steel ball and the momentum would be greater than the 44 Magnum? what I'm getting at couldn't just a larger heavier object such as a rock or heavy Rock being thrown at the pendulum make it hit harder than the 44? thanks

I maxed out my performance with that steel ball. If I would go UP in weight, the shot would be a lot slower. Speed and mass are equal factors in the momentum formula, that is why. Rubber performance is most effective at speed rates around 200 fps. A stronger man who can draw out bands powerful enough to shoot a 2" steel ball at 200 fps would of course achieve much much better momentum. But for my strength this is the optimum. Hitting the pendulum with a thrown brick would NOT swing it more far as the throw would be rather slow.

I don't understand ppl who say shooting firearms isn't fun. I've been shooting since about 5 years old and had a slug gun or air rifle as some call it since i was about 7. When i turned 15 my dad took me to the local cop shop and i got my gun licence. I got my A class, which is air rifle/rim fire, B=shotgun and D which is center fire. C was pistol. That day my dad took me to the gun shop and bought me my very own pig shooting rifle, a Winchester lever action 44 mag. My next birthday he got me a 30/06. At anything under a 50 yards a regular wrist braced slingshot with 3/4" steel shot will will most likely kill you or cause serious internal bleeding or concussions if it hits you most anywhere above the shoulder, if it hits you in the head in the right spot it will definitely kill you, but with a 1" steel ball if it hits you anywhere in the chest above the ribs or below the collarbone it probably has enough force to stop your heart and cause severe injury, it could very well rupture internal organs or collapse a lung. at 35 yards you could probably kill a deer with it with a good shot to the head behind the ear, i wouldn't mind seeing the 1" steel ball tested on a cow skull, if it can fracture a cows skull which is much thicker than a human skull it would definitely be lethal at typical hunting ranges (around 30-35 yards)

Don't underestimate the strength of a rock being hurled at you. You hit a deer with the 1" steel ball you're probably going to kill it regardless of distance as long as the momentum hasn't dropped too low. If it has enough power to crush the skull, that deer is gone. I'd like to see how a normal sling does versus a slingshot. I do know that master Slingers can launch bullets about 1,300 feet (0.25mi) before being non-lethal to unarmored targets.

Interesting video. It brings a lot of thoughts to mind. I'm relatively new to slingshots, but not to firearms. When I go to the range, I see people burning through ammunition like mad, like in this video, especially now with all the semi-auto firearms available. The cash register rings rapidly and repeatedly for the ammo manufacturers with every pull of the trigger, and the ranges here are jammed. Lately, I've also gotten into muzzle-loaders as well as slingshots. I have to say that I'm enjoying the shooting experience of both more than my more rapid-shooting implements, and I'm keeping more of my money in my own pocket. Even with my smokeless firearms, I now am getting more satisfaction out of shooting single-shots. And to make this comment more relevant to this video, bigger bores with a reasonable amount of energy transfer are most satisfying, my favorite slingshot ammo being .36 caliber lead balls that I cast myself for my muzzle-loading 1851 Colt revolver.

@eqlzr2 That is exactly my experience. The most satisfaction I get from shooting is with large single-shot firearms and casting my own bullets. In times past, cast lead bullets had to be loaded lightly to reduce fouling. The miracle of powder coating has changed all that. 350 grain bullets cast from wheel weights can be shot at 2500 fps with essentially no leading at all. Cost per round is surprisingly low: A thimbleful of powder and a primer - that's all.

The only thing that makes this test unreliable is that the energy used to deform the metal is not accounted for. The ball bearing seems to do no damage to the plate, yet the magnum both damages the plate heavily and moves it equally. There is a lot of energy lost in deforming the metal and obviously not accounted for in this comparison.

I kind of see what you're saying, if I'm right you're saying that the rubber did not resist the bullet as much as it resisted the ball and therefore the bullet caused more damage to the steel plate. I'm not really convinced that the energy transfer is equivalent but I would like to know actually if the slingshot has as much impact energy as the 44 magnum... I think that can be done while avoiding the variable of energy absorption by the material, if you can find the exact speed and mass of both the bullet and slingshot ball (maybe high-speed camera), then it's simple math to determine the kinetic energy in each.

gtametro Even if you strengthen the plate, it will just cause the bearing itself to deform more. You could try to design a special force gauge, but it would be more accurate to measure the speed of the projectile, measure it's mass and then calculate the energy.

Handguns aren't illegal in Australia, at least they aren't in Queensland. There's a lot more rigmarole involved compared to licensing/buying a rifle or shotgun, but if you're a paid-up club member and you have a clean record then you can own a houseful of pistols if you like.

And, since Jorg finally made a starship, if he had used the "less deadplay" technique on that particular slingshot, wouldn't it have added more power to the shot?

according to this test you could say that an average human hand can hit harder than handguns. Because obviously you can push the pendulum very far. Or throw a brick on it and again... That´s what the steel ball does, it pushes because of it´s weight. But a bullet is going very fast and it´s smaller. That´s the lethal part about it. I´m sure you know it but I wouldn´t sleep if i didn´t point it out :D

the test isn't fully valid: magnum shot, transferred A LOT of energy into: a) deforming the steel plate, b) splintering/damaging the pendulum. If all that energy has been transferred into the movement of the pendulum instead, it would swing much much further.

At my university, we have a lot of kids that never have handled a gun in their lives. They just developed a irrational fear of them. So I occasionally get some of these virgin shooters to go to the range with me, I show them all of the safety precautions before they shoot, and I let them pop a few targets. They get such a thrill from it, and are far more comfortable around them after I show them what shooting sports is really all about. Usually they do not change their mind on gun control or anything, but I planted a seed, and thats something.

The only place where momentum really counts is rocketry. The .45 magnum bullet has an energy of about 1500J, while the gun shooting it only has an energy of 17J. Both the gun and the bullet have the same momentum.

Do not get me wrong. I think slingshots are great, but you are not factoring in the energy transfers occurring with the pistol rounds. The bending of the steel plate and the breaking of the wooden supports? Energy transfer. The bullet deforming and disintegrating? Energy transfer. The solid steel rounds you are firing from the slingshot do not have a high enough energy to bend the metal plate or deform the round. Upgrade the steel plate so that it will not bend when struck by a pistol round, make the frame of the pendulum out of steel, and use a steel-core round for the pistol. I bet you 659 youtube points that even the 9mm will transfer more energy into the swing of the pendulum than that slingshot.

This test is flawed. The mass of the ball on the sling shot is greater an a bullet as well as the surface area in contact. This test could be repeated with a bag of salt and still present the same answer. This says nothing about hitting harder. It is just basic physics.

JoergSprave u still missed the point.... you stated power test. well whats the power level at smaller calibers. ok... fine .. so now i ask what was the point of firing all the calibers from a handgun. then firing one shot from slingshot. of course a caliber of 1" is going to apply more power... its over twice the size of a 44. and traveling slower. so again if u fire the same calibers from a slingshot. you will have a better more complete test. also not just using black or gold bands... red green and natural latex produce variable speeds on smaller ammo. eapecially tapered bands

That´s not really a scientific way to test it. Firearm bullets deform on impact and they fly at much higher speeds - in other words, a lot of the kinetic energy transfers into the deformation of the bullet and/or the plate whereas the slingshot roundball doesn´t deform at all, the indentation at the target will also be minimal and therewith delivers almost the full punch (except the little bit of lost energy from the ricochet). The easiest thing to do is to use a chrony and calculate foot-pounds or Joules - I´d bet that the .357 has a lot more power than the slingshot - maybe even the 9mm. The .22 with about 100 Joules may probably be a little weaker. A wooden plate would show that clearly - even the .22 will penetrate at least 2" - 3" of soft wood. The 1" steel ball will just make an indentation.

The laws of physics in terms of energy in the round are completely the same. Since the kinetic energy of the round is a product of mass multiplied by speed squared, the the mass of the round doesn't matter since it's taken into account anyway. Also, as he said at the end of the video, the penetration power of the bullet is much greater, since it's smaller and moving faster (helps it puncture human flesh easier) even though the energy in the shot is less than the slingshot.

i dont think the idea of the test was to see how powerful the slingshot was with the same amount of weight as each of the calibers. otherwise, each of the guns would have to fire the exact same weight in lead. the idea was to test the "momentum" and see which of the items carried more. obviously the slingshot with the steel ball won out because of its much higher weight and size by comparison. the test in the video doesn't suggest that the steel ball would be better at killing or punching through bone or anything like that, just that the momentum was greater.

I'm pretty sure that the slingshots ability to move the pendulum would be reduced if you used lead. But I do not know whether that would change the order of results... When a bullet hits a hard target it destroys itself before it can even overcome the momentum of the obstacle. Lead bullets can even evaporate some of the lead because of the extreme pressure. If you had something that "caught" the bullet I feel the test would be different. I looked up how much a 1" steel weighed. I found 63 grams. It says in the video info that it moves about 206 fps. Thats about 92 foot-pounds. That is a lot, its really impressive. But compared to a bullet its weak. A 22lr out of a rifle is about 100 foot-pounds. A 9mm is about 300-400 foot-pounds.

Yeah - I know this is a 4-year-old video, but in the hopes someone comes along as I did and reads this in context... A lot of people below complain about penetration of bullets. In fact, penetration is not what you want. Lethality of a round comes from transfer of the energy carried by the round. If the bullet penetrates too much, it takes energy out of the target. Some lethal effect is the puncturing of organs, true, but firearms are much more deadly due to the energy transfer. It is like jumping off of a building and landing on a steel rod. All the energy of the fall is concentrated on one point. That energy impulse travels through your body rupturing blood vessels and organs and crushing muscle and soft tissue against bone. In the American Civil War both sides used flintlock weapons that flung 0.68 inch diameter balls through smoothbore barrels. Take away the barrel and replace black powder with rubber, and you can even use the same ammunition for the same effect. The shape of bullets gives you better ballistic qualities for more accuracy and the fragmentation of a bullet causes it to slow faster increasing energy impulse, but lethal energy impulse is lethal no matter how it is delivered. You can take apart a 9mm jacketed round and swallow the bullet with no harm to yourself. Bullets are not lethal. The energy impulse they deliver is.
