Smart or also start with a very low limit as well, that way you can also manage it incase they can't. I think that's ideal because they need to learn responsibility, and by not giving them the card, they won't have a chance to learn that​@michaelswami

When I added a friend as an authorized user, it did not hurt my credit score, but it did boost his score, as the average age of his length of credit went up.

I was added as a AU and the person got two late payments. I removed myself as a AU yet the negative late payments won’t remove from my credit profile.

I wish more credit card companies would let you set a limit for individual authorized users. I love this feature with Amex business employee cards but I'm not sure who offers it with consumer cards. I know Chase doesn't. So although I might trust somebody like my kids to a point, I wouldn't want the liability of them to be able to run up let's say $20,000

The AMEX Gold card allows you to place a minimum limit of 200$ for authorized users.

I have the AMEX card text and message me when purchases are made so that I would know if the card was stolen or used fraudulently or if my AU goes on a spending spree that makes me concerned. I would also be able to freeze the card immediately until payment is received if I want to take that action. AMEX is so quick to notify me of charges that I know within a few seconds of the approval that a charge was made to the card. This limits the possibility of someone doing something to harm me or put fraudulent charges on my account.

Have heard depending on the issuer that say in year five you add an authorized user that some issuers will retroactively add all five years of history of the credit to the authorized user and with other issuers that it will only count year five and beyond for the credit carrying over to the authorized user.

Hey, i was hoping if you could help me with this question! when someone adds me on their credit card, do i get the history behind "that" credit card or the full credit report? because in their full credit report they have 2 missing payments but on two other different cards from different banks! and i was wondering if that would still hurt my own credit.

I am not sure of every card issuer's reporting policy, but in most cases it will be noted on your credit report that you are an authorized user and not the primary cardholder.

I add my teens as authorized users, they got their owns cards but it’s the same number as my card. Do they have to use it to build their credit or are they getting credit off of my use? Again their cards are the exact same numbers as mine.

No, they dont have to use those credit cards. However, it’s still a good idea to teach them about responsible credit card use, like keeping credit utilization low and making payments on time etc., to prepare them for managing their own credit in the future. But it's really not necessary for them to use those cards, to benefit from your credit use, unless of course you want them to. Continue to use your credit card as you do, and so long as that credit is healthy it should reflect well on their credit reports. So to answer your question: Yes, they are gaining credit off of your credit card use, and no, they don't have to use the credit cards themselves to build credit. Hope this was helpful!

It will erase your credit history from their report. So before taking them off, tell them to open a credit card under their name only, once they're approved you can remove them.

An authorized user certainly doesn't need to be given a card or be involved with that account at all. Wish you would have addressed that, but I can see what point you were trying to get across IF the authorized user actually had access the the card.

Can i from a strategic standpoint. Get some authorized user accts = to increase my current credit score... For the purpose of securing a "debt consolidation loan" at a better int % rate? Or would it not matter as much, because once I secure a debt co solidation loan at given int % rate, would my credit increase due to the altered individual acct balance standings = as paid off,in terms of credit card accts specifically...which would allow me to recover and improve credit to in turn apply for a better int loan and move it again. ? Some issuers do allow you to control the limits on individual authorized users. i have not compiled a list of them, though. i believe Apple Card does, but am answering off the top of my head here.

On the other hand, an authorized user's credit score can go down because the new card will shorten the average age of the user's credit history. I didn't think about this, but it happened to my son when I added him as an AU to my Venture X card so he could get lounge access.
