Climate change threatens every aspect of human life. Data has shown that even the most effective mitigation techniques will not be enough to prevent further impact on the environment. This session brings together a panel of climate tech specialists and researchers to discuss the major role AI can play in reaching our climate targets.
AI has the speed and scale to have real global impact. However, much recent AI progress has been focused in areas not directly applicable to tackling climate problems; for example, large language models like ChatGPT.
Our panellists address how we can align AI research with climate goals - and what exactly is needed to create significant impact in this area - while also exploring the current state of environment and sustainability AI research.
Speakers:
Aidan O'Sullivan (Associate Professor in Energy and AI, UCL)
Maria Perez-Ortiz (Assistant Professor, AI Centre, University College London)
Natasha McCarthy (Associate Director, National Engineering Policy Centre, Royal Academy of Engineering)
