This video is geared towards beginners looking for an inexpensive axe that they can learn to maintain themselves. This is a review of a ThrwClub 19 inch throwing axe. This is an inexpensive axe, available on Amazon (where it currently retails in the US at $43.99 USD), that is designed for throwing. Can it work is a pack or camping axe? I decided to find out! (Spoiler: it does pretty well!)

So refreshing to watching someone bushcraft who actually understands how to use an axe. Nice job felling that cedar. Good accuracy.

Nice review! Like the look of this one. Proportions seem right and the bit length is usable for a slipfit head, so many have a tiny little 2 inch edge. That sudden flare out around the fore of the eye is a bit different. Cool axe! 🪓

Thanks Kurt. It’s actually pretty unique combination of features that make it quite handy and would be hard to find in another model. Plus, given the price, the chunky construction, and ease of handle replacement, there’s no need to baby it.

Seems pretty capable for light tasks around the fire, and easy to pack and carry. Hope you keep doing the gear reviews. Thanks for the vid.

Yeah, you need a new handle, even though it was made to be thrownI never see that symmetrical eye... if that poll was half inch longer... was almost perfect. Nice Video Thank U.

Great little axe for the price, I use it for bushcraft and haven't had any complaints about it

Idea: If you take off the axe head and let the handle soak in linseed oil it should swell up and the head should set a bit of lower on the handle when reattached.

Thanks for the suggestion. It’s had some oil but oil does not swell wood to any meaningful degree. I could use glycol but don’t currently have some. A bit of hockey tape around the handle has worked well for me in the past as a stop gap.

@@MattKeevil Great👍 Mineral oil won't swell, but a hardening oil like linseed oil (and perhaps Tung oil) should swell up to 10% as it cures

I think it’s great you’re getting gear to do reviews on and using it the way you would use it!

Nice work on the handle and bit. What kind of file were you using to set your egde profile? Coarse, medium or fine? Thanks.

Normally I use a 10 inch mill "bastard" file, which is a single cut type in the medium range. The one in the video is an old file I got used and it doesn't say what the coarseness is but it's a fairly fine 10 inch double cut file. Buying old files is often a bad idea because old files are commonly already worn out but this was a dollar and I got lucky. I think it's a good idea to have both a medium file and a smooth file. If you have a quality smooth file you can get a very fine edge without a stone.
