In this lesson you are going to learn modal verbs can and could. Students often get confused with the correct use of these modal verbs but in this lesson all your confusion will be gone.
General ability (present)
1. I can speak English fluently.
2. I can swim.
3. She can dance and sing.
Ask/give Permission (Informal)
1. Can I use your pen for a while.
2. Can I sit beside you.
3. You can leave now.
To Request
1. Can you please help me with this bag?
2. Can you please explain this address.
3. Could you please pass me that bowl of soup?
Possibility
1. I know you can do this.
2. Mountain climbing can be arduous for you.
3. Surfing can be fun activity.
Could
General ability (past)
1. I could run fast but now I can't.
2. She could ride bike in her teens.
3. She could dance and sing when she was just 3 years old.
means to be (physically) able to do something OR to know how to do something.
Ask/give Permission (More polite)
1. Could I use your pen for a while.
2. Could I sit beside you.
3. You could leave now.
To Request
1. Could you please help me with this bag?
2. Could you please explain this address?
3. Could you please pass me that bowl of soup?
Possibility (past)
could+have+past participle
1. I know you could have done this.
2. We could have stuck in the traffic but we made our way out.
3. You could have arrested for this.
Suggestion
1. You could call him back.
2. You could go for jogging.
3. We could go for hiking
Conditional of Can
1. If you had informed me of your arrival I could make you nice dinner.
2. I could visit him if he had invited me.
