One stand-out feature about the bastion over the other budget/slim boxes shown in this video that I really like is that the top piece flipped on its side is a great commander deck holder to keep the deck from falling over or losing cards from the top when drawing. The empty space in the U shaped latch makes it easy to fit your finger underneath to get your deck out of it to tutor and shuffle. It's not exactly necessary for 60- or less card formats, but many double sleeved, blinged-out commander decks are easy to partially or fully topple over, so the bastion is just a little nicer for thinking of that.

Ultimate Guard has a lot more of my money than Ultra Pro for one main reason: subtler branding. I really can't get over the plastic-chromey "Ultra Pro" badge on those boxes. Brings me back to the 90s, like cheap containers for colored pencils.
@DrunkGeko Жыл бұрын
I'm very much the same way. Satin towers just look tacky, i don't like their design at all, and the main problem is indeed the badge Gamegenic bastions look a lot better but still, the overly transparent acrylic makes them look kind of cheap, the more opaque boulders are still the winners in the looks department imo

One interesting test I'd like to see with these is the throw-it-on-the-ground test, simulating what happens when my bag splits open and spills my decks on the concrete. How well do tower, boulder, cube, prism, bastion or whatever comes out next actually stay shut when there's impact involved? The Bastion for example looks like a winner on most fronts here, but the material seems thinner, so it might crack easier on a fall, allowing the lid to come off after all.

It looks like most of your shaking of the Bastion had your hands on the sides of the bastion where the rivets connect the shells. That is definitely the most natural way to grab it, but would be great to see another shake test where the hold is different to really test the hold between the connections. My guess is they still hold, but just thought it would good to check further.

I also try to use some of my old MTG accessories whenever possible to help with board game storage and organization. This makes sense since they are larger and can fit more cards. I am comparing to the plastic MTG art covered Ultra Pro deckboxes that are about $5, not the boulder or any other acrylic ones. All of them are very nice fits, you can store the cards front facing or side facing as you prefer. However the most recent one I purchased (purple, if it might matter) did have strangely concave sides (where the latch is diagonal), making the total latch fit imprecise and never fully closed. There were strange little shavings inside the box, suggesting this was a failure of the machine opposed to material. The fact that this failure goes across products is a bit concerning for UG quality control.

I think the possible issue with the Ultra Pro Cube's is they are slightly different plastics. The clear glitter ones might be slightly softer allowing more flex to them while opening. Where as the opaque ones are a more rigid plastic that does not flex as much to allow it to open off the locking tabs. That is the only thing I can think of on why they would be more difficult to open. They are probably manufactured differently and are of differing rigidity's..

I bought two satin towers on your recommendation when I first got back into MTG and was buying my first commander precon to try the format out. They are still doing well. I bought a couple of the satin cubes when I first saw them and had the exact same problems with them being hard to open. When you first recommended the Boulder I bought a couple and loved them, and I've bought several 60+ for standard/pauper decks and several 100+ for commander decks. I've also bought a couple of the Boulder and Trays and I really like them. Even though they hold slightly less, I just shifted to using a token vault instead of putting tokens with each deck (I love token decks and I always buy 15+ of every token for every deck because I love token cards and always need more). For me, the reason to buy Satin towers/cubes or Boulder/B&Ts is that I want the dimensions of my deck boxes to match so that I can stack them in a Currier bag or on a shelf and they all fit together perfectly. The slight difference between Satin towers and boulders, always made packing awkward, so I just started matching my boxed. I'm not a big fan of side loader boxes that are wider than they are tall, and I prefer the frosted matte colors to the clear shiny acrylic of the Gamegenic boxes, but I'm glad that others are out there pushing the industry forward.

But I’ve soured significantly because over time they inexplicable become sticky and gross (my guess bec of that “soft touch” coating, which also has a tendency to flake off) And when I asked Ultimate Guard on twitter how to clean it, they asked me some questions and then stopped replying completely. Want to buy the bastions to replace the boulders

I’m quite a novice when it comes to deck boxes. I also haven’t watched a ton of your videos (yet!). So, there may be a very good reason why a lot of the ones I’ve been seeing (including my current favorite) are not in your videos. Maybe someone can let me know if there is something bad about this box or why it is not the best to use. My current favorite is called the Vault X Premium Exo-Tec. I’ll say a few points about why I like it. It has a nice soft textured rubber-like material on the outside (no sharp acrylic corners), and the inside is a nice felt. My double sleeved cards are quite sharp on the corners, so I’m not sure if they will destroy the felt over time. It is a single piece and it has a wrap around cover that is held tight with magnets. I have shaken it similarly to what you just did (after I watched this video) and I’m not as strong as you but I could not get it to open. It is also designed to fit into many other larger card holding cases, which I like. And finally, even though the listing says 80+ cards, I am able to fit in 126 double sleeved cards into this. The cards I was using for the test were a mix of DBS and Digimon cards, and they were all double sleeved. I’m able to fit around 116-118 cards in a single stack, but because it is a cube, I can also fit some more cards in the small gap to either side of the main stack. That many cards puts a lot of pressure on it, so maybe I will take some out. So, is there something wrong with this box? Any particular reason only acrylic style boxes are in this video? (I’m genuinely curious and I am definitely a novice at this)

Glad to see this one - has been an absolute pain trying to get boulders in the colours i want here in the UK (apparantly it's an import/supplier issue) but know that GameGenic are available, so will have to give them a go for my next one

Miss the reviews. Happy to see this in my feed. Takes me back to school when debating on what sleeves to use my only $20 on.

I've been needing to get deck boxes for my precon commander decks. I need to keep them safe so I can play Daleks vs Hobbits as often as possible! Thanks for the reviews! The Gamegenic Bastion seems perfect!

I bought the UG Boulder after your first review as I wanted a compact deck box. But I found it won't fit my double sleeved deck (DS Outer and KMC Inners). And yes, i left my deck under a pile of books for a month just to flatten it. Afterwards, i found the deck box getting sticky and its plastic skin peeling off. Worst purchase out of all my TCG Accessories. Would never use an Ultimate Guard Boulder ever again.

I need room for tokens, that Bastion looks perfect. The Boulder 130+ has too much room. But I dont see the Bastion on the profs landing page

This is a perfect video, because I think I have a need for all three of the top grades here, and it's great to know why each one fits my needs.

Well now I feel weak because the 2 prisms I purchased a few months ago are the hardest to open deck boxes I’ve ever used. Like, harder than the ultra pro boxes. Actually my purple prism box is stuck and I can’t open it

Another of the Professor's videos sold out products before I got a chance to order them. 😂 Note to self: Watch these videos as soon as they come out! #TCCfinance Great video, thanks!

I've got an opaque line green CUBE that's a nightmare to open too!

So I ended up getting one Prism that I could NOT open and close without struggling. I reached out to BCW and they actually sent me a free replacement for that particular color. My main issue is that they’re doing away with their original matte design and only doing the hard plastic now. I personally like the matte, but it is what it is. They said they’re going to redo their original 6 colors in the new plastic design as well.

I bought two UP Towers a few years ago. The plastic developed a sticky film outside, something that supposedly happens when the chemicals they use to coat the towers react with air. I don't use them anymore because they've become unsightly.

Engagement! But really though, I have had all the mentioned issues with Boulder and Satin Cubes. I can't wait, thanks to this video, to get my hands on some Bastions to try out instead.

All I want are deckboxes that can fit a fatpack/ bundle box.

So, I have actually had trouble with fitting a double sleeved commander deck into a satin tower (using dragon shield matte outers, and KMC perfect hard inners)

I think materials wise the BCW is the most durable. If you have small hands though I will warn you that it’s even harder to open than the ultra pro.

Hey Prof, still got the first Tower I bought 8 years or more ago and it's holding solid, it's my favorite deck box! As far as I remember I got it because I saw your review of it many years ago and went to a local LGS to get it!
