what varieties can grow in your area?
@AmzBackyardOrchardandVineyard2 жыл бұрын
Here in the Arizona zone 9b, we have mild winters and very hot summers. We have what is called very low chill hours, only up to 300 hours of temperatures 45° and below. There are a few common varieties that can still produce fruit including Golden Delicious, Anna, Tropic Sweet and Granny Smith. Also Ein Shemer, and Dorsett Golden all do well! We so far have four of these varieties including honey crisp in our backyard Orchard. All of them are handling our summer heat!

What is the distance your planting the trees from the block wall? Thanks.

This apple tree and Most of our trees are planted about 1' on center from the block wall.

@@AmzBackyardOrchardandVineyard thanks for the reply. I was thinking of planting trees in the range of 1-2 ft from my block wall. Just wondered if radiant heat from the wall had any negative effects. Also have the roots caused any issues with the wall or house foundation?
@AmzBackyardOrchardandVineyard Жыл бұрын
Radiant heat not so much, reflective yes. We watch out where and what we plant against our south facing wall and use a permaculture design principle. Basically use larger fruit trees to 'afternoon shade' the more sun sensitive plants.

We try to keep about 6 inches away from the concrete footing of the block wall. We keep our fruit trees and Vines at a manageable height which will limit large root growth potential. Most of our large fruit trees against our walls are under 10 ft tall. We follow the 'backyard Orchardcultre' principals and it works for us! 😎

Can you grow it in zone 6 or any cold climate
@AmzBackyardOrchardandVineyard2 жыл бұрын
Great question! Yes they can handle cold climates. The Tropic Sweet Apple only needs 250 - 300 chill hours, so yes zone 6 will definitely give you that. If you're expecting freezing temps while the flowers are breaking dormancy you'll need to cover them to protect the flowers. We keep our trees pruned within reach for that reason and many other reasons. That way we could cover it with a cloth like an old bed sheet with clips at the bottom.
