What role can art play in tackling the climate emergency?
In this film, we take a look at artworks by L.S. Lowry, Simryn Gill, Abbas Akhavan, Otobong Nkanga and Nicolás García Uriburu, to explore how these artists raise issues connected to the environment and inspire us to take action.

This is the first time I've heard of Simryn Gill's work having not had much exposure to photography but I'm blown away by the concept of it.

ART CAN DO A HELL OF A LOT MORE. THE ARTS INDUSTRY HAVE A LOT TO ANSWER FOR. Schemes like Tate collective are so important, but where’s the rest of the support, education, joy that needs to be provided from the high platform that is the arts industry. The world is in turmoil and has been leading this way for so long. The arts could have done so much whilst the tories were cutting more and more services. High class art circulates around the 1% - probably very key to why this hasn’t happened.

You can’t stop trying but unfortunately our fellow humans don’t seem to give a f***

It’s easy to get discouraged, but the reason humans don’t care is not because of our inherently cruel nature, but because the scope of the climate catastrophe gets lost when every day is a struggle to keep your job or even to survive. If we can provide for everyone’s needs, perhaps we will all be more able to see the big picture and act towards saving our planet.

@@thegeekclub8810most humans do care however when we are bombarded by news of war, bloodshed and the fate of our planet, some of us have a tendency to stop listening or we switch off. Unfortunately the majority of today's population are more concerned about our material wealth and the accumulation of this wealth that we have become desensitised to the whole concept of climate change.

Unfortunately, for the vast majority of the population art is just decoration. Very few people are going to wait for a piece to be explained to them, especially when that piece is not flashy and pretty.

Perhaps, then, the solution lies not in art galleries (which I love, don’t get me wrong) but in mass entertainment. Movies, TV shows, video games. Perhaps if we give people stories that they emotionally invest in, we can underlie messages about healing our planet.

I mean, has art occupied any kind of meaningful world-making space since the early 20th c.? Authoritarianism and marketisation gobbled up the avant-garde from each end. The kind of perceptual games played with e.g. laying out bronze plants on the floor where neither artist nor narrator is able to say much interesting about it is as far away as one can be from influence. We're confronted with a meek awareness-raising. Marketised art can only make it worse. Art is another thing to consume. The thing will be infinitely copied in books, on tote bags, videos, online - the thing itself travels like a billionaire's jet. The higher the price, the more energy was burned to pay for it, and the price keeps going up.

The commodification of Art is as old as Michaelangelo (even before that - remember Hans Holbein? The Bayeau Tapestry? Patronage?). It is really only in the last century when art became more accessible to everyone. Personally I feel it is a good thing. Because Art IS for everyone. Not just for the elite or the wealthy to enjoy or critique.
