In this video, Dr. David Velkoff, co-founder and Medical Director of the Drake Institute of Neurophysical Medicine, discusses whether autism can be cured. While he wouldn’t go so far as to say that there is a “cure” for autism, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t hope for autistic individuals who want to live a much-improved life.
In fact, the Drake Institute has successfully treated many autistic patients who have not only experienced a significant reduction in symptoms but in some cases, no longer meet the diagnostic criteria for autism. Matthew, one of Drake Institute's very successful patients, is an inspiration for others.
When Matthew first came to the Drake Institute, he was taking 8 different medications and was on the verge of being institutionalized. After receiving treatment at the Drake Institute, Matthew’s symptoms improved to a level where he was able to be titrated off all 8 drugs, transitioned from Special Ed to mainstream General Ed, finished school and is now living a happy, independent, and successful life as an adult.
At the Drake Institute, we use brain mapping and neurofeedback to create customized treatment protocols to address each patient’s unique needs. The first step in our treatment process is using qEEG brain mapping with a clinical evaluation, to identify any area or areas of the brain that are dysregulated linked to symptoms. The brain map findings then become our blueprint for clinical treatment protocols.
We then use neurofeedback training/treatment to record and display brainwave activity in real-time on a computer screen with auditory and visual feedback. Through visual and auditory feedback, the patient is able to see the results of how their brain is functioning, and they can then change and improve their brainwave activity to a more functionally optimal pattern to reduce symptoms.
During our treatment, no drugs are administered and there are no invasive procedures involved. Instead, the patient improves their own brain functioning, using their own brain's resources.

Does it matter how old the patient is? My son is 22 and about at a Level 2 Autism, is verbal, but needs to speak better, needs emotional regulation and do better with social skills. He did finish high school and has completed life skills courses. I think this could help my son. Also, can you recommend a practitioner in Colorado?

Dr. Velkoff, my family doctor said that autism is neurodegenerative but Asperger syndrome is *_not._* What about PDD-NOS?

Dennis, Autism is not a neurodegenerative disorder. Autism, as well as the former diagnoses of Asperger Syndrome and PDD-NOS, are neurodevelopmental disorders which can all be improved.

Deep psychological therapy will cure' it but the person has to be committing to their therapy in orser to beat the spectrum.

I hope you say this because that was what helped you or your loved one. However, psychological therapy would not help my autistic son speak better. So, I think your statement, while probably valid for you, is not a valid statement for everyone.

Autism is not curable. It is not a disease. Autism is a neural diversion. Just as neurotypical people cannot become neuro diverse, the same is in reverse. Genes are involved. As an aside, the only 'curable' part of Autism should be acceptance, non bullying against Autistic people, tolerance and understanding. I also object to being labelled as disordered. As far as I have experienced, the 'disorder' is the ignorance and lack of awareness and acceptance of Autistic people in society, employment, social settings. We are all different in our world, all different.
