How can babies learn two languages at once?! I want to share my foreign language teacher tips for teaching a baby two languages. But, can a baby understand two languages and how do babies learn to be bilingual? Well all it takes is 30 minutes once a week, and in this video I will go through how to teach a baby to speak two languages at the same time.
Even if both parents only speak one language you can use the ideas and tips from this video to help make your baby bilingual and teach your child to understand 2 languages or 3 languages or more!

I worked at a nursery in Japan teaching the babies through immersion, and it was so fun to see their language acquisition. Sometimes they mixed English and Japanese if they didn't know the English word, like "up して" for "pick me up" and "goodnight いやだ" at naptime when they didn't want to sleep haha. One of the little girls started thinking my name was Hello because everyone said that whenever they saw me XD

Yes to all of this! As adults, we try to be perfect in everything we present to the child, and that can end up inhibiting us. You don't need to perfectly speak the language to introduce it! My co-teachers in Korea had the same struggle. They refused to speak English while teaching it because they feared it wasn't good enough (it was pretty damn good) so by the time I arrived as the native teacher, the older kids were past that sponge period and really struggled to catch on. Any exposure will be better than no exposure!

We've been speaking to my son in only Chinese for almost 2 years, and I just recently realized that he's learning Chinese well, but doesn't know any English (my mother tongue)! We probably should have done "One Parent One Language" from birth, but anyways, about a week ago I started speaking to him only in English. It's a little challenging to make the switch now! He's starting to understand some English, but he's not speaking it a lot. But I'm sure he'll catch on before too long. I guess I'm just concerned that growing up in America, he'll be more interested in English, and in the future he'll forget about Chinese. So I wanted to give him a good foundation in it. I guess if I see that happening, I can just switch back to speaking to him in Chinese again! I'd love for him to learn Spanish too. My Spanish is rusty now, but I can read a book. Maybe I should get some kids books, and read them to him sometime before he turns 6. Another great method is to hire a babysitter who will speak to him only in the target language. Bella Devyatkina is a Russian girl who speaks several languages, and she learned through babysitters.

I love that you’ve focused on Chinese! Honestly, from my experience with multilingual families, English often becomes the dominant language even when a different language is spoken exclusively at home. So honestly, some English at home does help but, in most situations, the children will be fine even if you never do! ❤️‍🩹

Thanks for your sharing you knowledge. How about for my case. I am a full time mom of 15months old. I speak filipino but we lived here in canada. My husband and his family speak filipino all the time. What i am doing now is i schedule language exposure like monday-wednesday English then the rest of the week filipino. My husband is always out-of-town. It looks like I am a single mom trying to teach her kid bilingual. Appreciate your reply

Hi. Thank you for your video. I was wondering if you have any advice for stay at home guardians who are bilingual. I speak spanish and English and speak to my daughter both. I do english in the morning and spanish in the afternoon and sometimes both throughout the day. What would be the best approach? I would also like to incorporate a new language for both of us. Thank you in advance

That was fantastic! I’m pregnant with my first baby and we’re Brazilian. My husband and I were talking about raise her as a bilingual child. So he’ll be talking only in Portuguese and I’ll be talking in English. This is called OPOL, I guess. However, I’m an English teacher and a sign language interpreter in Brazil. I’ve heard that newborns can communicate with us using sign language. So what’s is your opinion about that? My husband just speak Portuguese. And about English I need to study a lot about it, to be consistent and also creative to do some activities with her. And to learn baby vocabulary because I’ve been studying English since 2005 and I’ve never saw those kind of things in my entire life. I hope that I can do my best for her 🤰🏻💖

Thank you so much for the video, it’s brilliant. I was wondering whether the parent should strictly speak that language they’re trying to teach in their everyday life or just when they’re teaching ? I’m sorry it’s a bit if a silly question.
@mixed_and_nerdy
@mixed_and_nerdy 2 жыл бұрын
No such thing as a silly question! And ideally if one parent is going to speak one language and another parent a different language then yes they should try to stick to it. But you can always do the indoor/outdoor rule where you speak one language inside the house and another language when outside the house. If you are learning a second language alongside the child then that is also a totally different scenario

Hello! I loved your video! My son understands two languages arabic and Spanish but I’m worried that is time to introduce English for childcare and future classes and I’m afraid I’m mixing many languages while speaking to him already. I don’t know I’m which one to focus because the reason he knows many languages is because both side of the family don’t know the others language and not everyone know English. So I feel maybe is too much pressure for him😢 that’s my thought tho, because he doesn’t seem to care much 😂

Mixing languages is pretty common when their brains are still developing! It doesn’t mean he or she won’t learn to separate them. It’s kind of like walking. At first it takes forever for them to get moving but then they do, after lots of time! Consistency is key. ❤

Do I have to speak to them in the other language ALL THE TIME? Or can it be like most of the time or at certain hours (I don't know, play time, or at breakfast or something). I'm the only parent that would be talking in the foreign language but kinda seems unfair to me if I'm not allowed to ever talk on my mother tongue to mah baby :c

There are several different types of multingual teaching methods, but you are absolutely able to do what’s called “Time and Place.” Kayla Díaz at “Bilinguitos” talks about this! It’s where you speak the minority language at specific times and places (like bath time, or in the car, etc). It definitely is good exposure!
