Despite the Brexit vote, a significant number of Britons did not want it. I think Britain should be allowed to rejoin Brexit even if the EU compels the UK to accept the rules. Brexit happened, the EU adjusted and moved on. Brexit is a domestic UK issue now. The UK is free to apply for another EU membership whenever it wants to: all European countries can do that and the accession process is clearly described on the EU website. Joining the Single Market and Customs Union is not an option for the UK right now: the UK is a Third Country, and SM and CU access is for EU (First Countries) and EFTA (Second Countries) members only. The UK is currently neither, EFTA membership is off the table since members Norway and Iceland don't want the UK in EFTA. So what remains for the UK, if it wants access to the SM and CU once again, is apply for EU membership: first the UK needs to meet the Copenhagen Criteria, and then it has to be voted in by all 27 (or 28, 29, 30 by then) EU member states, unanimously. One veto and the application will be denied. This will be a long, hard and windy road: meeting all of the CC will be a challenge, and the chances of vetoes are very much there. The UK has alienated quite a few EU member states with its antics since 2016. And there are also countries that benefit economically due to the UK's absence: many (financial) trade opportunities shifted to parts of the continent.

First Scottland needs to be accepted as a Country by the UN, then Scottland can file for entry to the EU. Than a long process started to "synchronice" laws and standards so that Scottland fullfill all conditions to enter. Then when Scottland the access is granted Scottland it has to build a hard border to the "outside" Countries England and (via ferries) Northern Irland (are there Ferry connections to Wales?) what would be a mess because Scottland trade mostly with England. Maybe the trading volume switched over time in "most money made with EU" but this will also need time and will have first a drawback (lost trade with England and not yet estabished trade with the EU).

As for the CPTPP: you're not officially a member yet and the UK basically has had to swallow the existent deal hook, line and sinker as is. The CPTPP is also expected, according to UK government-figures, to deliver a whopping 0.08% growth in GDP. And that's in the long run... The TCA is not exactly a comprehensive agreement either: it only covers goods and leaves services - much more important to the UK economy - up in the air and dependent on the EU's good graces. If you call all that OK, your standards are quite low.

I have a more individualistic idea for how this could work, each of the UK States would be able to individually decide if they wanted to join the EU, who would be able to accept if they desired, in order to satisfy the other states of the UK and also keep the EU happy, ofc a compromise like this would be hard to pull off since the UK is still a single state and it would be pretty difficult to get multiple parts of a country into an economic alliance and not the others.

Many people have discussed the scenario of Scotland divorcing Westminster and joining as an independent Country. Some say the EU will, Some say the EU won't allow them to join. But nobody has mentioned the very realistic possibility of Northern Ireland Divorcing Westminster. The only branch you are voting for is the legislative, which is the parliament (sometimes there is a fusion but then you don't really vote for the PM directly, like in the UK, so there's that). European commission is an executive branch. It cannot impose laws. It is ultimately the member states, whose government has been elected, who legislate. Also, the elected EU parliament legislates together with the council, and in addition supervises the commission. So the commission or the EU cannot decide to go to war with Russia or China because the EU does not have an army. It is an economic and political union. As a side note, national identity and self-determination are abstract concepts and are not particularly helpful. No one is identical within the nation and no one actually self-determinates. I am a Scott and I want to leave the EU. A) National identity: some Scotts feel British and some feel Scotts. Whose identity is the right one? Is there such thing as a common identity at all? B) Self-determination: how can I self-determinate in this context? I can't really. I have to follow the majority of Scotts who decided to stay in the UK. I have to do deal with it because that's how modern democracies are set up. In this respect, it doesn't differ much from the EU.

If you travel through the EU, you inevitably notice cultural differences between Wester, Southern, Northern and Eastern Europe. That is really not an issue. Together with the recovery fund NextGenerationEU, the 2021-27 budget amounts to around €2 trillion in current prices. It can be broken down into roughly 7 areas of expenditure: Single market, innovation and digital. Cohesion, resilience and values. We are doing OK even without UK. The biggest problem for EU is to get rid of either Orban or Hungary if they keep propping him up. Article 7 of the Treaty of EU gives EU the power to strip Orban from Veto and Hungary from voting rights.

In my opinion, the UK isn't a founding member anymore but a new member and has to bow to the regulations like everyone else if they want to rejoin. Which means it would take years for them and they wouldn't get extra privileges. Also means that they would most likely not rejoin, but idk. There are to many exceptions already in the EU, it needs to be more unified

There is no RE join. The UK would have to apply as a completely new country outside the EU and accept all the conditions that would be required with absolutely no opt outs or refunds. Technically yes the UK can apply but all EU countries would have to agree and then it would take years of negotiations and checks that the UK conforms to EU rules. There is also the mood of the EU and their citizens. We might fulfil all the conditions(unlikely) but still get vetoes.

Special status like Norway+Switzerland possible. But they pay for that many of the costs, partly like a member. Can't imagine GB would accept this after that Brexit-Show of the countries greatest populists. Even rejoinig is possible, but than without "extra-saussages" from the past. Any decission has its consequence+price. A comeback would be great for me as an European enthusiast from Germany, but to be realistic, it won't happen before a new generation claims power in politics and EU parliament got more power and far less veto-rights. Actual election result good step, but Labour got with 1/3 of votes 2/3 of the seats. A formal majority in an all-or-nothing election system, but not valid enough change in British peoples mind. Getting closer step by step might be more realistic. And than in 2030s or maybe 2040s things might get discussed more valid and honest.

Nous ne voulons pas perdre notre culture et nos identités nationales, j'aime traverser la frontière allemande et rencontrer des allemands avec leur mode de vie, de même en Italie ou en Espagne...c'est ce qui fait le charme de l'Europe. Je comprends donc parfaitement les anglais et je pense qu'ils ont pris la bonne décision....historiquement les anglais ont toujours été au premier rang des libertés individuelles, la magna carta, l'abeas corpus, la glorieuse révolution de 1688, les trade union....je pense qu'ils ont encore ici fait le bon choix car politiquement l'UE est à la dérive....qui vivra verra.

Romanian here. Yes, UK should rejoin EU. The sooner, the better, as the UK businesses will have fewer problems adapting to working again with EU customers and regulations. Especially farming, fishing, etc. But we need to ask UK (and others) to get at least 60% approval from the British people in a referendum before joining; and 60% approval to leave. I don't like these non-categorical 50-50 results. What do they even mean?
