I had a budgie I raised by hand from an egg. When he got older, I got him a couple of friends. A female plus another breeding couple I had gotten to take care of. Erik the budgie, however, did not care about the female at all and would rather preen and feed Hubert, the other male. And Hubert was completely okay with it as well. So yeah, my budgie was gay, and I loved and accepted my feathered son for who he was, may he rest in peace.

They are not “gay” they are friends. That’s what budgies naturally and instinctively do to show affection towards eachother. They'll do this to anything, even their own reflection in the mirror and siblings/family members.

My dad breeds birds. One time he had a pair of conures that just wouldn't breed. He ended up putting them in a communal cage and the male immediately paired off with one of the other males and the female with one of the girls. I pointed it out to him and said well theres your problem

I keep a large colony of english budgies, and I had a pair of males that would preen, feed each other, and even mate! They took over a nest box from one of the females when she laid an egg in it, and raised that baby themselves. I put up extra nestboxes, of course, so the female just claimed a different one and went on about her life. Technically, they kidnapped a baby, I guess! LOL. But, to budgies, there's no moral judgement or political agenda. It's all just survival of the fittest. They are amazing to watch in a colony setting! I thought it was beautiful.

And I know some people are mentioning the whole "gay by choice" thing and, yeah tho I think the wording could've been a little better, due to the deep rooted emotions phrasing can have on people based on historical context, (i.e. by saying that "they can be naturally gay, but may sometimes engage in homosexual behavior out of psychological necessity") given the context presented and keeping in mind that, like you've mentioned, your focus upon writing was more about making a concise presentation of information, it can be easy to extrapolate what you mean I mean, otherwise you probably would've never brought up the topic to begin with :y

Totally. I have replied to others as well. "Gay by choice" was meant to be "Can choose a same-gender partner" not actually deciding that it is gay, and most people understood and will understand exactly what I mean. Homosexuality in wild animals doesn't occur out of nowhere, they are born gay. Same thing can be said for gay male budgies that CAN be with females inside a cage, but CHOOSE to be with a male. One can conclude many wrong things about an endless amount of subjects, and it's not my responsibility if a person is too arrogant to do so.

mine was used to be gay too… every time I loaned him out to a pet shop to pick a mate for him, he always chose the male ones. When I realized that it was not a coincidence on the 4th time, I decided to take the male one he chose (soon after that i realized they chose each other ❤️). it was true that i wanted baby birds but i was very happy with those two :) I had already bought a nest and wondered what would happen if I don't take the nest from their cage and I didn't separate the nest(which was already prepared) and what I saw after that was REALLY adorable. my son and his male wife started to mating, and even using the nest… the male wife was like he’s incubating in the empty nest and my son fed him aswell. I really loved them. then… Unfortunately my son got sick, and died… he was only 7 years old… me and his wife are really got upset… after his death, I saw the male wife was not ok, and I was unable to buy a new bird, so I decided to give him to someone. even so, he didn't live long... It was the real love I've ever seen in my life. just wanted to tell this to people, nevermind :’)

And he has like fed and preened Shiro (Idk how to say that lol). Buttttt I have another male budgies, Ken, and he's done the same with him and is usually by him most of the time. Our male budgies Twinky and Bubi are the sweetes couple ever. We got Twinky at a pet store, where they had an aviary with a small flock. Our other budgie sadly died a few months later, so we introduced Bubi, a pretty small "second hand" budgie, to him. It just clicked. Twinky immediately tried to preen him, while Bubi was kind of confused at first. It was like Twinky had instantly decided, that he would take care of this shy little fluffball.

I always thought of homosexuality in animals being different than in humans mostly because we have a very developed sense of "self" and know what gender is. Birds are much smarter than most other animals so maybe they do have a sense of "self" and gender, but since we can't speak with them it's hard to say. Being gay or straight or anything else is a fundamental part of the "self" for humans so I just never imagined animal homosexuality to be the same. Then again, who knows. Maybe someday we'll learn how to communicate with crows and have a definitive answer. Definitely something I would like to be studied more.

I have no idea of my bird’s gender but I’m planning to upgrade the cage and get him a friend.The zebra finches’ cage is a lot bigger and I feel like it’s suitable for my bird, and for them to play around their cage. I will be getting At least a few birds in the cage though

Male budgies gives food to the little budgies and the budgies aren't able to produce another budgie until they're about 1 years old so that's kind of a dad thing to do not that illegal

Homosexuality exists in most animals particularly social species. Sex is far more than just reproduction. It serves a social function as well and it feels good. The argument that animals have a survival instinct to breed so can't be gay is just weird. Humans are animals as well. We have that same instinct, the same the same drives, we are just smarter and can articulate it, thats all, and like our feathered friends, some of us are lgbt. Its completely natural.

As they grew up and as my knowledge about budgies became bigger, I realized they’re all males. me and my friends/family always like to joke that i have transgender budgies (knowing that they aren't) and the reason why is because we got them when they were pretty much babies and my one bird Lemon had a pink nose and my other bird Sherbet has a blue nose. (lemon & sherbet) but as they grew up, their noses changed colors constantly and one day Lemon's nose was purple. and now they are adults and it turns out, i was wrong. Sherbet was the girl, and Lemon was the boy. i still love them just as much. but i still misgender them occasionally due to this and i feel bad, even though they probably don't care

This was a great video, and it was very interesting hehe. I think one of my 4 budgies is Bi-and I say this not to offend first of all-but this particular budgie (Muffin) kisses and hugs and even hand-holds his girlfriend (her name is Wendy) and then he also sometimes kisses our boy birdie (Banana we named him). I think this is normal since they were all mixed into one cage, but then I noticed that whenever “Muffin” kisses Banana, his pupils change from going large to small, large to small. Is this still normal? (Just concerned for my budgie, I absolutely mean no offense :/)

“Kissing” for budgies is just something they do to show affection towards eachother. There’s also a difference between friendship love and romantic love.

My female budgie and my other female budgie preen and regurgitate each other and my female budgie just layed eggs after 8 days i tried egg candling and there was a heart beating in all of the eggs . Will the eggs become baby chicks or not ? It wasnt due to lack of choice cause they had 2 males and a nesting box
