Can Buying High Fashion Make You RICH? Reaction To Mr. Wonderful of Shark Tank

Kevin O'Leary argues in his new video that you can get rich investing in your own wardrobe. As a fashion "expert" I put this idea to the test. Do clothes appreciate in value like the stock market? Or is this a novel (but ultimately flawed) idea?
Recently I discovered Kevin O'Leary (aka Mr. Wonderful) on KZbin despite never watching Shark Tank, a show where he acts as one of the hosts / investors. I agree with a lot he has to say in his "How To Get Rich Investing In The Things You Love" video, but...I'm skeptical guys! I've been around the block, I'm not sure if its that easy. But stick with me because there is a lot of good points for both arguments in this video.
You can watch Mr. Wonderful's original video here for more context: • How to Get Rich Invest...

If you want to make money on fashion you should only buy from a brand that still has its original designer. Or if a different big good known designer transferred there. Other pieces will fall in value.

Also, investment piece is just a marketing term created so people don’t feel like their wasting money, feel less guilty buying expensive things, it’s not a purchase, it’s an investment.... yer right!!
@BertoBeats

I think more what he means is you should buy things you really love because ultimately you need your money to make you happy as well or nothing is worth it. But if you buy expensive luxury goods, not only will they make you happy, they're much more likely to withstand decades of wear AND be worth a lot of money later on. And I think he also means *decades* of time, not really stuff people sell on Grailed that came out 3 years ago. Stuff always dips in value initially when the supply is too high but is more likely in say 30 years to be worth much more as it becomes harder and harder and harder to find. It's not as sure of a way of making money as just investing it, but investing money and letting it sit there doesn't really bring you joy or make you look fashionable or cool. It's a passive thing that only pays off in the long run.

No way, designer clothing holds onto more of its value than fast fashion. But it rarely ever increases in value unless it becomes "hyped" due to celebs wearing it.

I don't buy clothes thinking of long term investment. I have pieces that are 25 years old, but are not worth what I paid for them. Buy what you like, buy quality, but not for investment. Do that with money. Love the video

Great video! I "invested" into a pair of CK205 Boots last year when they were on sale at Barney's, so far my "investment" has seen a return of more than 100%! Very interesting topic, especially since resell culture has become so large in the past couple of years

The diversity of clothing and style definitely makes it hard to invest in pieces. Art and watches and handbags have become such an investment because they are able to have the same value as clothes, but more people attribute value to those objects. Clothing becomes difficult as even if you have a ton of people who see value in your product sizing and the fact that the art has to be worn divides your market entirely. You see this in footwear as pairs of the same shoe can sell for hundreds less because of their sizing. This makes what would've been a hundred people wanting to buy the same jacket for let's say 100 dollars to keep it simple. Now what would've been a 10,000 dollar market around your jacket becomes a 2000 dollar market as only a fifth of the people will fit the jacket and want to buy it. If enough people love a piece enough and be supercedes those challenges they can easily appreciate, however it still takes 10 times the market to be as valuable and investable as a piece of art or a watch. One benefit is barrier to entry with vintage being so low with thrifting when compared to art or watches as we assign value to vintage denim and old fruit of the loom tees. This makes clothing, especially vintage, a good low cost investment but the issues inherent with clothing make it a hard to scale and keep a large market around.

I think saving up for high quality, unique (can be uniquely timeless) clothing items that you LOVE is undervalued but not as an appreciating asset (and def not in replacement of stock and/or real estate investment). 99% of the time it’s going to depreciate BUT compared to most other clothing items, they will depreciate less and be easier to sell for a decent amount of money esp for special designer pieces. I’ve bought some more expensive luxury clothing items but I consider their value not just in what they could be sold for someday but how happy they make me to see them (I display my best fashion pieces like art because they are) and wear them (they make me feel more like myself plus add confidence and satisfaction in owning them). Mr. Wonderful is saying it’s ok to buy things not just because they increase in value over time but because you love them and because of that you have more insider knowledge about it. It’s not all about making money - it’s also about enjoying life. I think how much I’d spend on a luxury item depends on how much I have in savings/invested - if I have enough to feel safe in the future, then I can spend $500-1k~ on a piece occasionally and not feel guilty about esp knowing I can get at least 50% of that back if needed. IMO I’d rather spend that on clothes than say expensive rent or a fancy car but everyone has different priorities.

Great video Christian! I think it’ll be really interesting to see which brands and which pieces appreciate over time in the luxury space. Impossible to know for sure, but I think a lot of it is connected to the specific designers legacy and how their career unfolds.

@@BraveNewWear Wow! you replied to my comment thanks man. Yeah It is for sure the combo of TNF being a reputable brand with Supreme being an exclusive one. The brands have a long history of collaboration and thats also probably what drives the price. I would check out the TNF x Supreme MAPS jacket, the Bandana, leather nuptse, mountain jacket, and expedition. All of these jackets are old or just a couple of years old and they have skyrocketed in value over time. Even the used versions of these bring high prices on sites like grailed. Just wanted to say I like the vids man especially the Nuptse video.

I would save up money for a year to buy alyx guidi zip boots or guidi front zip boots because these are really crazy and loud boots but suits my style, can be dressed up or down and will serve me for a long time. They are unique and very high quality and they can be really versatille (especially front zip guidis). They will for sure at least would hold its value. This is the very first thing that comes to mind. Other grails are lucking in versatillity or other aspects and hence it's not worth saving for I think.

I agree with you, I don’t think you can make money doing this, not reliably. You can buy 80’s men’s Dior for dirt cheap on eBay. Early BAPE does not sell for more than it did new (when you factor in inflation). The closest thing you could do is anticipate the hype of the future (90s band shirts, Rap tees etc).

Hmm I think there's room for a broader application of the term "investing in yourself" beyond monetary value. To me, there's more value in buying something you like purely because you like it rather than buying something you like because it may appreciate in value. For me, I would get the FW20 wool overcoat from Johnlawrencesullivan. It probably won't appreciate in value but I will feel good wearing it.
