Great idea for a test. I think if they had cover to go to they might try to get out more. As the trap is actually their cover, they don’t want to leave.

On your square traps placing some lead weights in the 4 corners of the bottom and some small floats in the 4 corners of the top will help keep it oriented right.

Oh thank god you called them "craw" fish. I was hovering the subscribe button on another video where you kept saying "cray" fish. I'm from New Orleans and that is blasphemy. You've got another sub. Love your analysis.

Great demo Matt I'd make a suggestion on the square traps a couple of pieces of rebar fastened with plastic ties along the bottom of them should keep them orientated sunny side up when they hit the bottom! Thanks bud!

Yeah I do like the round crawfish traps from the shoreline or whenever I’m out on a boat I really do enjoy using the square ones more just because if there’s a shelf or something like that they won’t roll down the shelf

I have one. It's a three foot kiddy pool I got for my dog. He didn't care about it so I turned it into a crawfish pond. Just put some yarn and stuff for them to hide under and maybe some cinder blocks to crawl through. You don't need aeration with crawfish.

Thank you for the video. I have a homemade crawfish trap. It is like no trap anyone has ever seen. It's got trap doors and they will absolutely not escape as long as it is oriented correctly. I put "weaights" on the bottom to keep the top up. I used a steel rod zip tied to one end on the bttom and drilled a hole in a rock and zip tied it to the other end on the bottom.. The trap doors work very well. I catch a lot of small catfish in it sometimes.Just thought you might find this interesting.

Those sqrawney crawfish may have trouble but it's no trouble for these big blues and leatherbacks we have here...if you see it's full of crawfish .you better pull it... most.of the time the reason you come up empty though is because of your bait.. never put loose bait in a trap they'll just try to eat it through the wire..
@vcpitcher185 жыл бұрын
Great video! Definitely seems like the gees g-40 is better suited for someone who doesn’t want to worry about the orientation of the trap when it’s thrown into the water. Great vid!

In PA you can only use a minnow trap for crawfish if it's hole is modified to allow the fish to swim out. So I just build my own tube traps. You should do a video on what bait to use in your traps. I just use fish heads or cheap canned cat food with the lid barely cracked open.

I have the round style one, went to use it for the first time last night, put some old hotdogs in as bait and set it overnight. Came back today, all the hotdogs were gone, nothing in the trap. Tried using some baitfish this time, but will see what’s happens
@khoality1023 жыл бұрын
You should put bait outside the trap to see if that motivate them. in a scenario , it ate all the bait inside, then craw out for more if you you leave it over night.

Just found your vids, enjoy watching them , very informative. Question though, what do you do with all the bait you catch? Sell it to customers? Sell to bait shops? Use it all for your own bait? Eat the crawlers? Hope to hear back from you. Thx for the vids.

I'm here because the square trap failed me last year. I remember checking after 10 minutes and seeing 6 in there. I left it or another 45 minutes and only one was left. It was oriented correctly.

Matt, have you pulled traps and the crawfish are all dead in less than 24 hrs? I’ve had this happen twice today and I don’t understand why...
@livefreefishmore10084 жыл бұрын
It could be that there is not enough oxygen for them to stay in the area where your trap was. Sometimes there can be "dead zones" where they can't stay for long without new oxygen in the water.
@Michiganwatch3 жыл бұрын
I was building my crawfish trap and I kind of screwed up today and I ended up with a 3in opening in a 9in canister by 36 in Long do you think the Crawfish can get out of that?
@alistairclark68143 жыл бұрын
I have been wondering that myself but have concluded it's the 180 manouver the craw has to do at the end of the cone, and that they can't reach the cone tip from the side walls that matters. I still catch very small craws with 2" holes in my plastic pillow case style traps. I think you will have escapes if your craws can reach the cone tip from the sides. They will stay in regardless if they like the bait and they don't run out of it.
