Can electric ice cream change the World? - Edd China's Workshop Diaries 24

2 жыл бұрын

Here's how I did it! Two years' worth of development into one video, I suppose it makes sense that it's a bit long, but worth the wait: No more diesel fumes with your ice cream ever again!
It's all very well converting a brand new Mercedes Sprinter ice cream van to ev electric drive but really, that is the easy bit! The hard part is converting the carpigiani ice cream machine inside the van to electric drive as it normally uses the van's diesel engine to power the pulleys around. I finally put my degree in product design to good use and invent perhaps the most vital part in the world's first all electric ice cream van. And if you have ever wondered how an ice cream machine works, I can help you there too...
Edd China's Workshop Diaries 24: World's Fastest Electric Ice Cream Van Part 8 (How to convert an ice cream machine to electric).

Yes it's very interesting, I had no idea they were belt driven from the engine, much neater to use electricity, even in a hybrid setup with recharging while driving to the next place. There's also a way to modify alternators to become motors, but it's tricky as I think the timing needs to be rewired internally - but potentially a cheap souce of motive power.

Watching John do his work reminds me of the old school boiler engineers and plumbers from back in the 80s and early/mid 90s. These craftsmen would turn up in a big ford van and have everything they would need for every job they'd encounter. In those days, you couldnt really just walk into places like B&Q and Wickes and walkout with a load of pre-made bends and other pipe fittings, Everything had to be hand made on the spot from lengths of copper or brass piping exactly how John did it. Watching John was very nostalgic.

A superbly put together episode, there's enough of the detail and information in this to be satisfying but you can see the amount of work that went into refining the electric drive 'cartridge' for the machine. I especially appreciated the explanation of how the machine actually worked, and the footage of John's work on the refrigerant commissioning. As much as the car repair videos are fascinating, I'm glad there is this sort of content here too. @@chaos.corner If you go with separate motors you could put the compressor&motor in the engine compartment with the condenser and remove nearly all the noise. Then the only noise made in the back would be the agitator motors

@Sev I think the idea is that this can be a retrofit kit for any ice cream van, including ones which still have a diesel engine to move the wheels, not just electric drive conversions. (Because, let's face it, how many diesel ice cream vans are likely to merit a full drivetrain replacement with electric? In most cases, it's going to be more cost-efficient just to buy an electric van if you're going down that route.)

Who would have thought an ice cream van could be so interesting. Quite an achievement and a great piece of engineering.
