I have 5 Gravely mowers and every one of them have decent cuts but leaves stragglers up until I did this one thing.... I made sure the pitch from front to back was at least 1/8 inch off nose diving the front. The second and most critical step is to remove the baffles from the front of the deck. once you do this you will wish you had done it sooner. The cut and overall quality is excellent. If you only take the baffles out and nothing else you will be overwhelmed of the quality. Why Gravely even puts the baffles on these mowers is something I will never understand, they only collect grass and clog the deck. I put over 200 hours on several of the Machines double cutting stuff and finally did these simple steps which changed everything. Hope this helps the next guy.

I got two Gravely 460's. One is a 2013 model year and the other is a 2018 model year. I took the baffles off immediately as soon as I seen that they were catching the wet grass clippings and building up. Absolutely no reason for them to be there. All they do in impede the grass discharge and create more work scraping the bottom of the deck, especially in the spring when you are cutting wetter grass and grass that grows at a much quicker rate then the summer months. Both my machines cut excellent and the X Factor 2 decks are some of the best finish cuts I have seen on a commercial ZTR.

We had 2 460's and a 160. 2 X-Factor decks and one X-Factor II deck. I agree removing the front baffles makes a big difference. Unfortunately for us and our fescue lawns the gravely deck forced us to double cut everything literally (75 lawns a week). If it was the slightest bit damp at all which is every single morning, it was clump city. Nice and dry but typical spring early summer deep? No clumps but instead large windrows of grass laying on top. Both requiring double cut to clean up. Grabbed a Tiger cat with 61 V+ deck to try and immediately dumped all 3 gravely mowers. Zero double cutting and zero clumping in any condition. Amazing stripes as well. Those were not the only gravely mowers we have owned either. First one way back was a gear drive Pro-50 walkbehind. Also a gear drive 36. Many bobcats, exmark lazer's, cub commercial we've tried just about everything except a walker mower.

I found an incredibly easy fix. Scag high lift blades, and remove the baffle at the end of the discharge chute. Perfect cut, nothing left behind. It’s like I have a new mower

I have a ZTHD 52" and I've been running it with mulching blades + mulching kit (discharge gate replaced with baffle) until the leaves finish falling, then I swap back to the stock set up with high lift blades. It does require me to double-cut certain grass types while in the mulching configuration, but it's well worth the clean, leaf/clipping-free finish. I'm still experimenting with different blade types, but one idea that may help you is running an "X-blade" configuration (2 blades per spindle, 6 total). I haven't tried it yet myself, but I hear it destroys all grass in 1 pass! Good luck, hope you got it working right!

Just wanted to give you an update..I have the same mower you have..I put Gravely part # 91-239 high lift blades on mine and it has completely changed the way this thing cuts..MUCH BETTER..It has never cut this well since I bought it..Hope you have the bugs worked out of yours..God Bless.

We have a mower like yours only ours is a 2017 with 178 hrs on it. We have never had an issue mechanically or with the cut. Down the road I would buy another Gravely.

Normal grass and shade grass lmao... My gravely was awesome and by far the best I have ever had. So smooth and destroyed grass and blew really far away. It's a ride-on street blower too.

I run two gravelys. Never had a issue. I would recommend pitching the deck 1/4 to 1/2 with the front being lower and removing the front baffle you had your hand on. A half inch seems like a lot but it creates more vacuum. I run high lift blades on mine as well and that made a huge difference in cut quality.

Wow I’m really sorry to hear this. I have a Gravely that I purchased in 1998. If I told the average Joe it was a 2018 model they’d believe me. It still looks brand new. In all those years I’ve only had a couple problems. The first hour I ran it, the electric clutch for the blades went out, and was replaced under warranty same day. 3 belt replacements over the years, and the nut fell off the parking brake about ten years ago. $.35 to fix from hardware store. In all those years, that’s literally all I’ve had to fix on it. I do wish it was lighter, it’s built like a tank. I really hope Gravely hasn’t gone down hill this far and you somehow got that one lemon that just can’t be explained... 🥴

One side of my neighbor's transmission bracket to frame broke off on his Gravely 42". Those brackets are thin. He had man weld the bracket back on and welded a support bracket to the frame on both sides. Done the trick.

I have a gravely mach 1 and the fuckin thing windrows grass out the left side, I have tried 1/8 all the way to 1/2 inch pitch.... 3 diffrent sets of new blades, completely pressure washed the deck underneath so it is shiny again..... I have had enough of it, tried going super slow to medium speed also... Tire pressures also all good

These mowers are pretty sweet when brand new, but I have one and it gets a little worse every season. I just expect it's dulled blades and maybe needs a tune up with minor adjustments obviously. But yeah the bigger models have more options for adjustments.

I had so many issues with this mower and having that yamaha motor on it. it was like 3 or 4 engine rebuilds through the service dept at the local gravely dealer. the motor finally seized and dealer wasnt going to honor the rebuild (long story) the boss spoke with the parent company and they swapped us with a new mower that they used as a loaner. that motor with bucket over shims for valves was a pain in the butt

Yamaha motors don't just come on Gravely mowers. They come on many other high end mowers, tractors, boats and motorcycles. You must have forgot to change the oil on a regular basis and did not break it in correctly. After that, you are at the point of no return. Can't blame that mistake on Gravely of all companies! omg!

Mine usually starts fine in the morning after sitting all night and runs fine until I shut it off and then won’t start unless it sits for at least an hour. Dealer has been absolutely no help! Still under warranty but can’t afford to let it sit in the shop for 4 more months. These Yamaha efis are garbage! Can’t believe Gravely let us consumers be the guinea pigs.

I don't know if you are still having problems with stragglers, but if you lower your blade below the baffling with spacers above the blade, you will have a better cut. The only other variables are sharp blades, blade tip speed, and blade lift which is either too much or too little. I hope that this helps. Equally important, adjust your mowing speed too.

My bad for sounding mean but know your mower bruh. 100% of this machine is user serviceable. We sharpen our blades in the shop once a week, clean the air filter and check fluids. You must maintain that Gravely mower just as much as the lawns they cut. Monster of a mower if kept up with the required maintenance.

Not a commercial mower. But sounds like it's the blades used. I'd try high lift blades to get more vacuum inside the deck frame to suck up the grass blades to be manicured to an even height. Just my first thought!

What? Are you a "Junior" Varsity landscaper? TORO's were good back in the 1980's kid. Even their highest end now days is mediocre at best. Please don't tell me you got a commercial grade TORO! I'll give you about 15 other brands you should have purchased before that. Let's face it, we all want a mower that will last forever and give us constant quality cuts. TORO aint it. If you want to pay high end for leather seating, padded cushioning and super bouncy seat springs - there is a market for that. If you want a comfortable ride without all the "boshy BS" and a mower that will cut through darn near everything (even in the wettest of conditions) and last for years - go Gravely Pro.

When leveling the deck, did you measure (in inches) the bottom height of the blade tips in two positions, that is, outer edges of blades positioned front and rear, and then, left and right ? The height should match the height on the mower’s deck adjustment leveler. The lower 1/8th inch in the deck’s front should be best as you stated. Also, have the blades been hand sharpened and balanced on a Bench wheel grinder?

Exactly what I was going to say change the pitch first of all I would go to another dealer see if they could rectify the problem. I would also call gravely explain the situation. Perhaps they could send a zone manager down to check this machine also, this machine may have been dropped, so maybe one of the forks are slightly bent or something definitely go to another dealer see if they could fix it

the one problem i had working on these new mowers is the rpm on the blade's are a problem . there not spining fast enuff . 2nd there is alot of flex in the top of the deck where the middle spindle is . Meaning once you get alot of grass that is not being discharged from the mower the middle of the deck where the middle spindle is. starts to flex up an down . this is a factory defect and will get worst over time . my shop will not work on them any more due to Gravely starting to be hard to deal with just like Husqvarna an cubcadet .

Are you full throttle on the accelerator? Sounds like you may be traveling at to fast of speed if your getting Mohawks. It would be hard to imagine your not getting blade coverage on a brand new mower. Considering those blades would be sharp at purchase.

I have a brand new 672 it’s been great only 1 thing when I lift the front to clean the under side all the oil goes to places in the engine and make it not want to start is this something to worry about our it that normal

I'm gonna go ahead and say that you might not be being very fair to the brand. I use a residential grade ztx 52 to mow commercially and the deck cuts just fine, the only time I have to cut twice is when the grass is overgrown. All of the things you've pointed out for the most part are under warranty still, and I'm betting most mowers without a brand new edge on a blade have a hard time with that soft grass, sometimes it just doesn't want to cut.

@@youtubechangedmyname I just bought their Stealth (ZTX52) and used it to “mulch” all the leaves that have been against the fence/tree line for years. Took me an hour plus to rake out a couple feet into the yard and an hour to “mulch” all the leaves. (Would this be new mower abuse?) 🥺. You couldn’t tell there was ever a single leaf let alone the decomposing layers underneath lol. I highly recommend Gravely. I originally was looking at that club cadet too. It’s a beautiful machine but have you seen the reviews online for it? It didn’t leave any question in my mind that that wasn’t the mower for me. Did you make your purchase yet?

I got this mower specifically to be able to drive it through a 36 inch door kzbin.infoUgkx1VWTrayKBdCKAjzAcZ_Eg4dhHTae3LkN also recommend or gate It is a little tight with the grass deflector installed but has more clearance with the deflector replaced by the recycler/mulcher. This model appears to be popular and a little harder to find for that reason. I can't judge the dependability as I have only mowed the yard twice but everything else on the mower is very nice and working fine so far. I added options for the run hour timer, arm backrests, recycler/mulcher, towing bracket, deck lift assist and cover.

How long do you expect it to last? If you half heartedly maintain it, you'll get half the life out of it. Yours is going on 10 years and it's a residential mower. I'd say you are doing alright kid. Especially not maintaining it the way it should have been.

I had two of those they cut fine except for Bahia you had to double mow quite often especially if it was thick and I now have a 72 inch like that that amazes me on how little I have to double mow on but it has a 34 horsepower engine so I'm assuming it has a lot more RPMs I don't know

Raise deck in rear 1/4 higher than front, should cut like a dream, I don’t see how it cuts with deck lower in rear, my deck was adjusted wrong when I got it new, it was just about level and it didn’t cut right until I got rear 1/4 higher than front, and only thing I wish I did differently is got the 48 instead of the 260

my pro turn 52 the deck level hanger keep breaking the welds. done had two decks replaced. smh im taken to my fabrication shop and gonna have him weld on top. The design flaw is that the weld is underneatht the deck

Hi Grow It, Mow It...If you didn't get the Pro Series like I did, you can't treat it like a pro. Most likely what you purchased was a hybrid Gravely that is used for residential and extermely light commercial (volunteer at the church type stuff). Yeah, the welds on the hybrids are nothing like my (our Gravely professionals) welds on the high end mowers. We put our lawn mowers through hell and back and they can't wait until the next morning. Continue to buy Gravely but do your homework before you purchase next time. If you need some help just message me.

try drilling ports or holes in the baffles, it will make a world of difference, the holes should be about 1/4 to 3/8in size. I know it sounds crazy. but we did it and I can run over magnolia leaves and there is nothing left after that'[]

Any problems with your motor yet? Seems not many have the Yamaha. I’ve had my efi Yamaha in the shop COUNTLESS times. Governor problems and a long list of other stuff. Currently in there now. Gravely won’t help other than keep fixing it under warranty which is almost out. The owner of the dealer also has one and his is in for THrottle position sensor. Unacceptable for a 12k mower. As far as cut goes I just took the baffles completely off. Seemed to help in more wet stuff. But in dry it was still sub par. Sharpen blades weekly seems to help as well. Ive heard good things about their Mach one. But with the support I’ve been getting I may not stick with Gravely much longer.

Had my Gravely Pro w/Yamaha 26 HP efi for a number of years now. Only thing I do is keep the oil changed and blow it off after every mow. Still starts within a split second and purrs like the day I bought her. Sorry about your luck Patty_C. You have to conduct preventive maintenance on any motor or they will start acting up like yours. Don't leave it alone until there is a problem and then blame everybody but yourself. Just saying...

@@profighter1234 Ive been in business for 10 years, i do all the maintenance myself and actually change oil and filters BEFORE the schedule says. It started acting up with less than 200 hours. After being in the shop 6 different times over 2 years for the same thing I managed to get to 700 hours and it still wasn't right. Thankfully it is sold and I'm on John deere now with much better luck.

Are your blades sharp and do you use gravely mower blades That came with the machine??? I own a gravely pro walk and don't have any of these problems. It cuts grass perfectly. I don't think the problem is the machine. I think the problem is maintenance. And whatever dealer worked on your mower.I would never bring it back to them. The problem with all mower dealerships is that their quality is very spotty; Some good and some bad. How is the air in your tires? Is your deck level? Are you using the right gas and is the machine rabbed up to Maximum rpms? There is something you are doing wrong and it is not the gravely machine, In my opinion. You are the problem somewhere.

When you run it over asphalt with blades on you can hear and practically feel the vacuum sucking you to the road. For the record I was the assembly line manager/quality control and builder for" Wright Manufacturing" for 6 years. I still chose Gravely for my purchase.

I have a zthd48,biggest piece of junk ive ever owned. Poor cut quality, deck height adjustment off by 2”, fuel filter melted to block, carb issues by 2nd time using it, im on cbt spring number 9, 3 wheel motor belts, and deck cloggs up fast. Get rid of it, get an exmark

Why'd you go residential and treat it like commercial? So silly. Listen, you get what you can afford but don't complain about it if you use it for its unintended usage. Residential = weekly usage around your house. Commercial = daily usage for multiple commercial and residential properties.

@@profighter1234 you do realize up until latest model it had a commercial or residential warranty on it. On top of that I bought it for use on 2 properties. Rest of my lawns i run a snapper pro ss100 or an exmark metro. The only difference between zt hd, pro turn z, and zx are the motors on them. Z and zx are commercial

@@greggreen6636 It's a hybrid. Beefy residential. That is why it is so much cheaper than other Gravelys. If you were told this was for commercial use, you should go have a talk with the person who sold it to you or you should have done your homework prior to purchasing. Just saying. Good luck!

I started with this mower ZT48hd and never had an issue. I put Exmark hi lift blades on it. I currently have proturn 160 and Ferris z3x.

Yeah, my red rider...has become, a bit of a disappointment. I'm being told (by dealership employees, no less!) that these last 4-5 years...Gravely has had, some truly awful, quality control issues. Wheel and deck parts, drills, welds, mounts, alignment, you name it. Nickle and dime pieces, costing big dollar problems. The fix may be in, for them...but where does that leave the buyers, coming out of the warrantee periods; and then left, holding the (empty) bag?

I believe it had to do with the US requirement placed on manufacturing here in the US and Yamaha couldn't meet these mandated manufacturing requirements. This caused an increase in taxes/tariffs placed on Yamaha, who raised the cost over to Gravely. Gravely dropped Yamaha due to these cost related issues, the pause in manufacturing due to layoffs and factory closures, in addition to their EFI motors having issues. I don't believe the non-EFI Yamaha motor is having any issues from what I've been hearing.

@@PastFlatPat272 Truly sorry about your luck. You have to conduct preventive maintenance on any motor or they will start acting up like yours. Yamaha efi's are actually the best on the market. Fact. But, as with any motor, if you leave it alone you'll have problems. Preventative maintenance is key Patty. Change the oil every ten hours. Don't wait until there is a problem and then blame everybody but yourself. Just saying...

Let alone keeps my Gravelys running forever. Now I can see for the average person who doesn't take the high approach like I do that it may be a waste of money but these people have families and I take care of them.

We messed up and got 2 Gravely's. Just under $20k in purchase price for both. WORST purchases we have ever made! We will NEVER EVER purchase anything Gravely again, nor would we recommend it to anybody, not even our worst enemy! Excuse me? My Gravely Pro 252 leaves and amazing cut on cool season grasses. You simply need to have sharp blades and find the right cutting height. "Mowing Lawns 101". Oregon high lift, part # 91-264, try em let me know what ya think. Your cutting height will be off a 1/4 they are not offset. If you want to mow at 3.250 you will want to set the height selector at 3in👍

I replaced the stock blades with 91-264 high lift exmark blades and removed the baffles on my proturn 260, it made a Noticeable difference but still doesn't cut as well as an exmark or scag

Just don't buy one with the Kawasaki Engine. Kawasaki engines Sucks. 2 years the rings will blow out. and there NO REPLACEMENT FOR THAT ENGINE> PLUS NO ONE WILL WORK ON A KAWASAKI ENGINE. The Gravely Mower is a great mower. Again> just the Kawasucky engines sucks > You can get them with other kinds of engines. But its going to cost more
