I live in Michigan, so quite cold winters. Here’s how I have successfully overwintered seedling hydrangeas outdoors: I planted the rooted cuttings on the north side of my house right next to the north wall of the house in fall. I kept them watered until the ground was frozen because I have a couple foot overhang on my house that prevents rain from really getting to the area up against the house. I mounded leaves on and around them. The seedling survived great, woke in spring and took off. I transplanted them to their permanent positions in the landscape after they leafed out well in the spring. I have not lost one yet with this method. The varieties I’ve done this way are Annabelles and Limelight. I’ve also done this with rooted rose cuttings. Our temps get below 0 for at least a bit in winter and we often hang out in the single digits for weeks. No losses this way 😁

The irises started growing their leaves, than in April we get a freeze and messes up everything! On a happy note I have 6 lemons on my little lemon tree, I used one already...so good. I California I had lemon trees and which had fruits and flowers all year round. You know, I appreciate that more now when I don't have it. Out of all the plants I put under grow lights in my unheated garage, my hydrangeas are doing great! It’s still cold out there so it’s not big or fast growth, but there’s new growth! I have a variety of plants and many others aren’t doing anything. I love your videos Mike! Keep them coming! I love learning about this stuff! I will also add that I bought the 4’ 5,000 lumen double shop lights that were on sale for Black Friday at Walmart for $13! I bought 10! So cheap. Since the hydrangeas are loving it, I’m sure it’s adequate but I’ll be curious this spring to see if all the plants make it. I just ran out of time for planting and I panicked so threw them on wire shelves in the garage with cheap shop lights 😂

So that fig are you going to let it get bigger and then take cuttings and that way it has its own roots to plant out in your orchard? so if it dies back to the roots it'll come back true to the type that you wanted to plant there? Real cool seeing these thriving and proving your theory, Mike. I’m curious if a lack of dormancy or rest has any ill effects on their production come spring. Last year, your petunias kept blooming and laughed at the idea of rest. So, obviously it’s not “necessary”, but I’m still curious if there’s a difference

Mike, I have been watching your videos for a while now and enjoy the learning (plants and KZbin), and the rose propagation video was what got me hooked. I am looking forward to messing around with the indoor lighting, but speaking of propagation of hydrangea (and other plants), I have had great luck with bending low branches into the dirt and letting it go to grow roots and propagate new plants. It seems to grow the new plant faster than cuttings (and seeds). Any thoughts on that method? Also, I do think there is something about the cold temperature of winter for the overwintering, but keeping them warm all winter might be like some native environments of warm-weather areas...
@MikeKincaid792 жыл бұрын
The method you're talking about is called layering and yes, I've done it. Layering is a great way to get a few new plants going but if you want to really propagate hundreds or thousands of new plants then you'll have to use a different method. Here's a layered rhododendron video that happened naturally last year: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJKvq3uCftVmaNU

Oy, chico! I used the covered tub. 1/3 peat moss, soaked but not wet. but Pakistan black mulberry trimmings, 2 grapes, and 6 peach tree cuttings. The peach tree is in a neighbor's yard. His father a rancher, planted a pit there, and the tree makes good peaches, Elberta type. I ask how much water did he give the tree in summer. He gave me a frown and said, "You gotta water peaches?" Where the ranch is in the upper San Pedro canyon, and has shallow water table. Here, we're maybe 200 feet above the riverbed, maybe more. Worse, there's a lot of caliche in the ground and you knw what that means. But, all the mulberries are rooted, 4 of the peaches look good, and 1 grape, a Red Flame. Right now, 20 Brown turkey figs are in a 2nd tub, along with cereza del desierto (native cherry), and a bunch of Wonderful pomegranate cuttings. Hasta!
