Can I Beat Diablo 2 With Only Gear From Vendors?

Can you beat diablo 2 with only gear bought from charsi, gheed, and the other vendors of sanctuary? It didn't seem too bad at first, but the deeper I got into the game, the more obvious it got that the NPCs are selling some pretty crappy stuff in D2R.
And to make things worse, I decided to go with a melee barbarian as my hero of choice...

Yeah maybe I should have talked more about how long I had to shop for? The video is extremely edited for those parts, I spend many hours in total looking through vendors’ inventories. I did find those two shields in hell very quickly though, I remember being surprised when it happened.

18:00 berserk's interactions really are frustrating. you get all the negative sides of a melee char (i.e. having to rely on AR to hit stuff) but you don't get its benefits like lifesteal. Still your run inspired me to try it out one day, awesome video!❤

I have a challenge idea for you, friend. You can call it whatever you want but I call it the "inheritance challenge". The idea is simple: take a high lvl character that's beaten all 3 modes and have him run 1 area of each act through each difficulty and in this area you can keep 1 of each armor slot (helm, chest, 2 rings, ammy, weapon/shield) and your challenge character can use those for that act and to use the ones on later acts it has to get to the later acts. Rules: 1. Can only use inherited gear, any drops can be sold but not used. 2. Any mercs allowed, but gear is also inherited from you. 3.Buying pots, scrolls etc is allowed. 4. You can pick up gems and runes. You can use runewords, but only if you happen to get a socketed item inherited. 5. For the inheritance runs, reminder that you're only allowed 1 run per act so make it count.

@zarfen I was mostly correct, but I would have done a few little things differently. The biggest being using an a1 merc because inner sight is much better than enchant for improving your chance to hit, especially since they now benefit from the +Amazon skill items you were getting while gambling. They also give you the ability to customize their damage to suit your needs due to using bows. Poison to stop monster regeneration, cold to help slow monsters, etc. The added crowd control from the cold mercenary could also be very very valuable. I would also change the talents a little bit. I really enjoy going for flat # physical damage reduction, especially while playing berserk, so I would have focused more on that on gear and made up for it with more points in natural resistance. Using concentrate alongside berserk can also be really handy, even if its just rank 1. Your attack animations can not be interrupted while attacking with concentrate, so it could be useful with life/mana steal on those long fights where endurance was needed over raw damage, or just for refilling the blue bubble so you can save money on blue potions. I can't imagine how long you spent resetting inventories, farming gold, and gambling, but you did end up having some good luck with some great item rolls. In the end, you knocked this out of the park. Well done!

Some +3 to warcries javelins can be shopped from hell a5 vendor, too. Idk if you utilized find item, but that + warcry javelins on the council would be a fantastic way to farm gold.

Sorry for so many comments! But wands are another thing that you can keep an eye out for. They can have charges of curses that may be useful. An example is lifetap, which could be a way to refill your HP without using potions on those crazy long fights. Amplify damage could drastically help your concentrate damage against those magic immunes, even though it overwrites your battle cry. A1 inner sight merc to the rescue! (They can even have %chance to cast amplify damage on weapon)

Spending more points into natural resistance is also interesting, and something I definitely underestimate for a SSF character. I did spend a little bit of time shopping for warcry javs at mala, but ended up not bothering with it for long because I got tired of shopping and I didn’t think that was the biggest improvement I could do.

Amazing video! 👍 I would have used act3 freeze merc, you lose enchant but having mobs frozen or greatly slowed when you fight them would be tactically better I think. Especially since most of the annoying mobs in hell are fire immune, a cold mage merc would be a massive improvement. He freezes fallen and you smash them into ice cubes lol

Maybe I underestimate poison damage on weapons but that damage is dealt over 7 seconds and it doesn’t stack with itself. It also doesn’t get amplified by berserk

I've completed Vendor Only Gear runs on every class except Barbarian, so this was actually pretty amusing to watch. The easiest classes by far are Necromancer and Sorceress, especially Necro since he's the least gear-dependent character in the game and gets summons who can clear the game for you with enough patience. But I think the most fun class to do this with was Assassin just because she's so incredibly even with minimalist gear, and Normal Mode is a playground for her once you get some decent +Mana gear for her from Act II onward.

I got inspired by this run and did my vendor only hammerdin run. I'm in act 4 hell, act 2 is where the real challenge began. Having to run buy potions every few minutes and even running out of gold for potions at certain locations reminds me of the times when I was first playing Diablo2 original when it was released. You can say Hammerdin is easy but running without Spirit and other basic runewords made it challenging enough for me. Having to store some weak rare items for certain occasions, having to use antidote and thawing potions, having to use different auras like salvation, redemption, not just concentration makes me realise the game was intended to be played this way - we're so used to Meta that we don't see it. And it's fair - like when I'm around caster mobs, I use salvation which makes my damage lower, but they have lower health anyway so it feels really balanced. And I learned that there is a difference between mob's 95% chance to hit me and 83%. And feeling when gambling a +1 pal skills 20 all res amu was priceless. To bring more luck factor I changed a rule that vendor quest items are ok (like imbue, Anya's reward, and rings from Ormus and Akara)

Thanks for sharing! It really was a fresh experience to look for gear in other places than the countess :) What weapon are you using? I guess one could buy a scepter with both blessed hammer and concentration from grinding Drognan close to the town exit. Maybe even with FCR or +Paladin skills, but that seems extremely rare. As I was first thinking about using a Paladin for my run too, I realized that you can’t buy or gamble Paladin class specific shields, which takes away one really easy and reliable source of all resists. In hindsight I think allowing the quest rewards from NPCs makes the challenge more fun and interesting. Still keeps with the “vendor only” theme but gives a few limited opportunities to get lucky.

Act 4-5 did remind me of my playthrough back when I got the game as a kid. Insanely long boss fights, gold farming for potions... I remember my first necro (classic 1.00), I was like "wow, so many useful skills, better put one point into all of them so I'll be prepared for everything!". Then I realized Diablo isn't gonna die to my level 1 bone spear, so I went looking for a +3 bone spear wand. Obviously I couldn't afford it, so went to farm gold (and mana pots...) and then started again the wand-searching. Even with that, it took almost an hour to beat him. (2 days counting everything :D) Then I went in the cow level and got absolutely torn apart, started a new char instead. :D

Awesome memory! Thanks for sharing I have a similar strong memory from the first time I beat Diablo in normal, with a 1-point-in-everything necro. All extra points went into raise skeletons so they carried me all the way through the chaos sanctuary eventually but Diablo was a wall. I ended up beating him with a socketed bow with a perfect topaz from the hell forge in it.
