Bats are murder on Hard Mode. One would expect an Ogre drop kick to one shot, but a few bats will kill almost as quickly early on.

I might be late to the party but what are your thoughts on a player, myself, playing a sheildless Fighter or Assassin? I find its easier to just not worry about useing discipline on sheild skills that are kinda not doing anything verses being able to just keep getting better sword skills.

Opting to go without a shield is valid, you're technically just giving yourself less options in the long run but it doesn't really matter if you're simply playing to have fun. In Assassin's case I'd at least suggest taking a bow with you instead, but it's always your call!

@ThiefofCrystals I was considering a bow, i just consider the daggers to be kinda quick and not really pack much punch, more flash than results. I did try all three starting clases for about an hour or so on the beach and found Fighter to be my kind of good time. The Mage was just too powerful and made the game feel boring. Strider was cool, but not my kind of thing. I'm on my first play through, and I have never been a fan of sheilds. I just didn't know if they were mandatory in this games case. Thank you for the help.

I recently played through roughly half the game with a sword-only assassin. It was a lot of fun. I ran Dire Gouge, Great Windmill, and Clairvoyance. For you I would probably drop Clairvoyance for something else, but I was going for a swordmaster vibe. If you like fighter but you’re just concerned about the cost of upgrading shields and shield skills, I would just grab Deflect from core skills and use the best shield you find. Perfect blocking can really make a big difference and becomes kind of addictive. If you go assassin, just use a bow. Having range makes a lot of fights much more manageable.
