your ffx attack only challenge is my favorite series on youtube, and when i saw this was uploaded i got so excited my girlfriend heard me from the other room haha. i've been replaying through ff7 myself lately and with those two games being some of my all-time favorites, i'm so hyped for how this is gonna turn out. ff7 is a much easier game than ffx, but one boss i can definitely see as being an issue later down the road is carry armor. thank you so much for filling us ff fans' plates with such delicious meals!

Writing this at the start of the video, but I’m guessing this is going to be somewhat easier than the X run was; Materia options like Elemental + Fire/Ice/etc give ways to hit elemental weaknesses (without needing a randomly obtained weapon with the right property or having to spend resources to Customize it on like in X), Added Effect + Time/Poison/Contain/Hades to do status attacks, Counter + Cover to get a lot more attacks in, things like that. The big limiter will probably be that there’s few of those kinds of Materia to go around. Though at least HP Plus you can just outright buy. 7 is my favorite so this one’ll be interesting!

Yeah, this feels almost a little sham-like to me, though the creator doesn't seem like the type. It is weird, though. Attack-only challenges are very, very old and common with FF7. Framing this like "Can I do it?" is dishonest, it seems. It's not even a 1/10 on the difficulty scale. You can literally just hold O in every battle in the ENTIRE game -- with the default equipment, no materia at all, etc. And it's still possible. The game practically plays itself. It's my favorite game of all time, but the battles are not difficult, and it's not really possible to make them difficult without stacking and doing all the challenges at once. This? It's literally holding O in every fight, and possibly killing everything FASTER than if you used materia, etc. I haven't done it in a while, but I think the math is something like 20-24 attacks on average per boss (with default equipment and no fleeing) to kill them with attack only, lol. The whole game. Only very select battles without Barret in them could possibly pose a challenge, and they can all be ran away from.

@@davemccombs Diamond Weapon is impossible with only Attack though, since it's immune to all physical damage unless its countdown phase is triggered which requires using other commands. He'll have to bend the rules a little to allow a Sneak Attack or Magic Counter so he's using a non-Attack without technically selecting it.

For the limit problem, if you were truly determined to not mess with the game's original mechanics, you could have tried to kill off/let die characters to constantly reset their limit gauge. That said, it would probably require a ton of precise management and luck with enemy targeting ; that could be quite frustrating (if it's even possible), so i understand it wasn't attempted.

This is going to be really interesting! I love FF7, my first JRPG back in the day . The Materia system is so subtle, and can be adapted to many different styles of playing. Personally, I enjoy 'hack'n'slash' and the majority of the materia I tend to use are HP/MP Plus, Counter and Enemy Skill Big Guard. Admittedly, I also like to be OP, but as I am a Grandma, I hope that's allowed! OP Grandmas are the best, of course!!

Nice to see another challenge like this! Garland (FFVII challenge legend) just recently completed his "action button only + No EXP" challenge which would be similar to this, except he was at base levels. He did rely a lot on Materia such as Sneak Attack and Magic Counter. Will you also be using those? They don't technically go against the rule of the challenge since you're not selecting any actions other than Attack, but it still feels like it goes against the spirit of the challenge. Regarding Aps going on an Aerith killing spree, Tail Attack will always target characters in the back row (if there are any; otherwise he chooses a random target), so that's why your Aerith got beat up so bad. Lick is also always used on the middle character, so it was smart to have Cloud there, as he's the most valuable party member at this point.

Hype series! Personally attacking own party to wake them from sleep doesn't feel against the spirit of the challenge to me. If the intent is to be "auto" then specifically targeting Experiment 128 is against that. If the intent is just to be attack only, well, as you say, attacking your own party still fits :)

It's literally not. Attack-only's in FF7 are as old as the game itself, and are VERY, VERY easy. It's not a challenge. Everyone's little brother got halfway through the game this way in the 90's cause our older brothers took the memory card with them and we had to play fast, lol.

Protip: Put your cursor on memory (in options), so that you don't have to rechoose targets every time a character attacks.

Hey Dansg08, I love your content and am excited to see your playthrough of ff7! If you have done this (or planning on doing this) run like you did FFX, you might have already progressed a decent amount of the game w/o having put out edited videos. I'm curious to see how you would want to handle the full run. FF7 has some great Speedrun tech that can be interesting to see/learn as a player and viewer. Curious to see if you would even want to try out some of the strats/skips in this type of challenge. Play the game how you want to play, here to watch it all the same, but would be interesting to see you attempt some of them.

Ff7 was the first game that i bought... i played countless times... i seems to have a bit more patience than most of the youtubers as i always attack the shinra building at arround lvl20... and for the entire game, exept cure and steal, i think the only 2 battles that i used other things than attack are the elevator battle that you just finished and the safe monster of shinra mansion... ...but i used limit breaks... that seems to be somewhat game changer... especialy against boss battles later in the game... beating the ultima weapons, jenova and sephiroth without healing in battle seems to be a big deal... even at lvl 99... im eager to see how you will cross the Zolom swamps... will you do like me and grind until you survive it (arround lvl35/40) or will you "cheat" by the "save/load" trick a split second before it start the battle (the trick do reset its position)... because you dont have the right to feed the chocobo!!! ...oh and there is a 1% chance that the zolom will not catch you on foot without tricks... i succeded only once in about 50 atempts... you must place your character as close as possible to the swamp, at the place where its is the shortest path, then observe the zolom path, you will see that if he faces away from you when you rush to the other side, he will take about 1/2 seconds to turn arround, there i a particular spot on the east side of the swamp that is shaped as a triangle... if you are realy lucky, the zolom may go there, and if you rush at that precise moment where his nose is a pixel away from touching the corner of the triangls, he will not only take 1/2 seconds to turn back, but may also bump his head on the side of the corner and wiggle a bit for about an other 1/2 second before chasing you, giving you about 1 suplementary second of advance on him... and you may manage to cross the swamp to safety with him beeing 1 or 2 pixels behind you...

Using Materia is a good choice. It leads to more creative ways of solving problems as you encounter them in the game. Otherwise the solution to every boss you can't initally beat would just be "power level". With Materia you have options to do creative things like poisoning them or hitting elemental weaknesses.

4-8Productions does have some really high quality and in depth videos about the original FFVII, but he totally alienated me when he started raging against FFVII: Remake so I haven't gone back to his channel since.

The Sewer Tsunami attack from Aps did varying amounts of damage because if you look at the animation, he can summon the tidal wave from either direction. Against his own back does more damage to him, but if the wave comes from behind your party, they take the harder hit. I literally just figured that out myself when you mentioned the discrepancy and I played back the footage. 😅

Also, I wanted to say, I think equipping Materia is very much in the spirit of the run. The way that you're using it is no different than how you crafted weapons/armor to get through FFX. Exactly the same in principle. Passive abilities do not interrupt the "attack only" idea.

didn't sadness also reduce the damage dealt by the character? and the hyper status had the opposite effect. I remember using these status's to my advantage in the past when I used to play this game all the time. I can't fully remember as it's been some years since I last played.

Sort of - Fury reduces accuracy by 30%, Sadness reduces damage taken by 30%. So in this run you would want to be in Sadness all the time.

I just started doing another run through this, using only Command materia. I thought you could buy grenades somewhere in the building, and found out too late that you cannot, so that elevator fight was brutal.

Attack only is an interesting idea for FF7 in particular, because attack spends a huge amount of the game NOT being your strongest option by miles. Boss fights are spent spamming magic because it just does more damage.

I have always loved FF7, was my first and most played of all FF games. Now i am curious about how you feel about the materia that change the attack command (x2/x4 attack, slash all, mug) are those not allowed to be used or allowed similar to cover? I would also like to know how people would feel if you could show a load out/build for the bigger, tougher bosses (i can understand skipping the small forgettable guys lol)

What I nearly expected was the challenge forcing you to change party members' limit breaks in the menu between battles purely to reset their limit gauges. Using the modded save file was a great choice because the alternative sounds like it'd add soo much tedium. A character might as well be dead if they build limit during a fight after all!

I am going to be 100% honest, I don't know how I feel about you using Sadness when you literally remove its negative effect. It is a side effect of a needed conceit, I know. But I feel the Sadness state shouldn't be used then. Just giving your characters Wall at all times. But this is pre-recorded so it isn't something that can be changed now. If he even would.

Aerith is the only back row and there's a 3/4 chance in one of Aps' boss script turns to hit a random back row target. Love these kinds of series. If you need any other specific mods for challenges etc. there are hundreds of people who can hand hex edit these games, save files and so on xD

How did you beat Diamond Weapon?

@@Urpoliitikko1 The only way to beat Diamond Weapon is to let him attack your party until your limit break is charged and then you attack him with it. The slight annoyance with this challenge is that you have to allow limit breaks, because once your limit break is charged you are forced to use it instead of a regular attack. I would recommend grinding limit breaks for this challenge too and getting them all up to level 3 early on. Edit: I've just seen that Berk here has a mod to disable the limit gauge - which is something I couldn't try as I did this challenge on my Nintendo Switch. Yeah, without the limit gauge I'm not sure how you can get past Diamond Weapon then, unless there's like a really clever way with materia or something.

So the obvious wall to me is Diamond Weapon who is completely immune to Physical damage at the start of the fight. Things like Magic Counter and Sneak Attack could be considered to be within the rules and give you enough damage to get through though?

I'm pretty sure you could put Cover on someone in the back row, and when they do cover they'll take half damage. So it'd be optimal to put it on Barret since he'd be the best tank, as he's long range and can also do full damage while taking half.

I would keep in mind that materia changes your stats. You have a lot of casting materia on Cloud at the beginning, and I'd imagine that lowers his attack quite significantly. I think cure could be helpful to heal up! But the rest would really only be good if you're trying to master them or go for the defensive stats.

It is a shame you have to turn off the limit bars since they would add a lot of interesting things. Though there is a very major roadblock I can see coming regardless and likely only delays the inevitable. Props for doing the challenge regardless and I'm excited to see if you can get by what I'm thinking of or even make it there.

So you are allowed to upgrade weapons in this challenge right? Cuz, if so, then it is only a challenge until you get Vincent. You then just let Vincent take over and kill everything from that point forward and once he hits to correct number of kills you give him his Death Penalty and he will proceed to literally one shot everything including Emerald and Ruby WEAPON.

You actually didn't need to attack with Aerith and Red XIII for Hundred/Heli Gunner. You have a defend command accessible by pressing right on the d-pad. This reduces physical damage by 50% and should(?) stack with back row and sadness making your characters that couldn't attack more effective as bullet sponges. It also doesn't take any animation time to defend like they do stepping forward in their failed attacks so it would have made the fight go a little faster as well. I guess if you're counting defend as violating the attack only rule you can't use it, but I think it's limited usefulness and the fact that you're not really committing any action shouldn't cause it to be a violation of the challenge.
