ffx ability nodes only+no overdrives+no sumons basically you can use all the abilities on the sphere grid and customize equipment at will but you have lv1 stats and can't use overdrives and summons.

I remember the first time i played it. Every boss battle was like half hour, spamming every single summon, one after another, bcs i obviously didn't knew what i was doing. Good times. Ifrit, shiva and quetzacol animations are burned into my mind forever.

First time I played it I didn't even know what Junction is. Game was new (no English ver. yet) and internet wasn't a thing for me. My battle command consists of only Attack and I kept auto-attack everything until I stuck with Gerogero (almost impossible to win by auto attack with all that status ailments). Then I realize how Junction works lol.

Seems like an interesting challenge, though I must admit if I were to do it I'd likely allow myself the sort of 'passive limit breaks' from Rinoa. I wouldn't go out of my way for them and maybe just wouldn't teach Angelo any new tricks, but I think having to reset near the end of a long section because a dog RNGd it's way to digging up a potion for you would get frustrating

I played this not long after it first came out with no guide or walk through or anything. It took me over 500 hours to complete and I am not bullshitting I only played it in my spare time. During that time I became attached to the characters in their stories and the end of the game ended much like the end of a TV series that I had been watching. This still remains one of my favorite games. It is a staple that I play on regularly.

Best girl mages finish the game for you. I'd call that poetic for a magic-only run! MAN!!! That Ultimecia's Castle problem solving was insane!! Really great accomplishment! Upon reflection, I'm astounded you still chose to main with Rinoa and that her random Angelo limit breaks didn't mess you up more than it did! In hindsight, I think the absolute extreme of not even allowing Selphie slots to do your magic for you ended up being a huge boost in stability, especially since we can't open the lid to gain infinite do-overs anymore.

Fun tip: The rosetta stone rng manip can be timed based on the music, it's faster and easier once you find the spot by checking the loot table (can't remember if I found that online or with a hex editor) to know how less or more you should wait, then open the tt request just a few times if you need to adjust for more rng progression.

If I remember correctly, with Diablos, if you draw/stock demi from him and then use Demi from your stock against him, he'll cast Curaga on that party member. I don't know if drawing it from him is necessary if you already have Demi, but I do know that he won't cast Curaga on a party member if you draw/cast it.

Not really. The machanics of time manipulation aren't very well set, and there isn't any explained reason why certain characters know what time compression even does, since it's never been done before, yet they do. Also, the main villain has no real backstory and no strong reason to do the things she does. She's just there to be evil, and isn't even good at it. She doesn't even talk until the very end of the game. Also, why was a moon base created just to seal one sorceress, if they could've just sent her to the depths of space, where no one could release her? How does the technology of this world even operate? What fuel does it run on? Why is there such a technological gap between countries? It's not explained. There are other stuff, but i'll end it here since i don't want this to be too long.

At the beginning when you were using Seifer on the bridge, it's faster to equip 1 GF to each character (even the 0hp ones) than it is to equip them all to 1 person. The GF still grows even if the character it's attached to doesn't, and the rewards get split between them if they are all on 1 character.

On top of casting Blind on Diablos, you could've drawn Demi and casted it on him from your stock and he would've casted Curaga on whichever character casted the spell, ensuring an easy win

My very first playthrough with FF8 was done using the GF's only. I was 16 when the game came out and was kinda dumb regarding how the junction system and leveling worked so I just stuck with the GF's. Got me all the way to Adel and then I restarted my entire playthrough and had a little sit down with the mechanics. this is why the game is still in my top 5 out of the entire series.

Meltdown is an underrated spell, too. Vit0 is a status that doubles all damage, despite the name implying only a drop in Vit, so that would probably make Meteor even more OP. Also, I was just watching a video about how Chocobo World is in some version of the remaster (apparently it's in the 2013 steam version, too), just obscurely relegated to being accessible from the launcher after getting the other requirements. Would have been really nice to have a hint about that. Ribbon isn't even available from using the all items cheat that the remaster has built in.

Two quick things: You can draw cast demi on Diablos. You can just delete magic by going to exchange then pressing square or equivalent. Saves you from moving magic around.

What? I've played this game many times (original and remake) and that's how I fight Diablos(draw and cast Demi). Never once has he ever cast Curaga.

If I remember right, in the Diablos fight you can Draw>Cast Demi and he will cast Cure on you in response.

Ultimecia's powers focus around time and space. Ellone has an obsession in Squall due to her being his protector and being very sister-like. Ellone is stuck in her own time loop and tried to use Adel and Rinoa to break out of it to not become corrupt and to be with Squall forever. This is why Ultimecia draws Griever out of Squall's mind. Rinoa ended up becoming her own sorceress that was focused around healing magic(white mage), and General Caraway was worried that Rinoa would end up turning into an evil sorceress, but that wasn't the case, and this is also why you see the Odine bangle that was meant to be for Rinoa. Ultimecia is Ellone.

Hi Primalliquid! If you're considering another FF8 challenge and don't mind hours of frantic button bashing and monster explosions, can I suggest the Pokemon Trainer run? It's a kind of GF only challenge, but allows our characters to use the item command to support and to help actually complete the final fight against Ultimecia. Rules are: You win by acquiring every junctionable Guardian Force then defeating Ultimecia. The only valid commands any character can have equipped at any time are GF, draw and Item. You cannot use either Attack or limit commands. Involuntary physical attacks are okay though (e.g. confuse, berserk, counter) Draw can only be used to acquire GFs Siren, Carbuncle, Leviathan, Pandemona, Alexander and Eden. You cannot use it to draw or cast magic at any time. No playing Triple Triad. (you can card mod any cards dropped in battle or picked up) You can run from battles Stat junctions and passive/menu abilities are acceptable. (in particular, magic refining, tool refining and counterattack are permitted) There are some big challenges in the run, and Ultimecia is a gruelling fight but it is winnable by combining GF commands and items - you can eventually use gil exploits and tool refining to stock up your inventory, and refining Phoenix Pinions can be a big help!

I’ve played this game pretty much every year since it came out. I did not know you could actually destroy the spider bot in dollet lol. Knew you could do enough damage to get 50 ap and escape after that but didn’t know you could actually kill it outright. But yeah completing this whole game with just magic is massively impressive

I have to say, I'm very impressed with, how strong, Ultima turned out to be. I have a save file with all level 100 party, and I made them use Ultima (for s#&%ts and giggles, mostly) and the best my party could do, was little upward 900 damage (though, my party wasn't designed for magical attacks, tbh).

If you didn't allow the attacks from berserk, then can you really count potions from auto potions. If auto cure was an option im sure that would work. No idea how else you could have done it though. Your determination is praise worthy.
