My attempt to fastpack the Pennine Way - Unsupported..... failed
Carrying everything I needed on my back and only getting water from natural sources, I tried to fastpack the Pennine Way - unsupported. It's not as easy as it seems as fresh clean water can be a scarce commodity in the countryside!
I was following the route on the Harvey 1: 40,000 National Trail Pennine Way Maps: www.harveymaps.co.uk/acatalog...

lovely video but don't really understand the only natural water thing. for the sake of a wonderful experience - i think i might have let that one go and water up where ever i could. but well done on what you managed - its a great path

Hi Richard, thanks for your comments & thanks for watching my video! I get more fun from pushing myself than making life easy! I also prefer running in the mountains, and the first few days on the Pennine Way are more countryside (with lots of fields and styles). So, as I could not make the challenge about being self-sufficient it would have just turned into a countryside run (albeit a beautiful one); and that's why I decided to call it a day.

Hey it's Chris from 19:04 I just got back a few days ago myself. I just feel that it was an extremely difficult, if not impossible task you were undertaking. Though I'm sure you could do it if you select the right time of year (perhaps around april/may time) and get good weather for that time of year. Still, a very valiant attempt and look forward to seeing future videos.

Hi Chris, thanks, I think maybe a supported approach next time, with less weight on my back each day, less km's per day and taking a bit more time to enjoy the scenery, although I think I would still try and wild camp every night. Hope your trip went well and you made it to Kirk Yetholm?

@@TravelTrekRun Yeah, it was tough going, especially over Pen-y-Ghant and cross fell. The last two days was difficult too because there's no real place to stop so I crashed in a refuge hut. Sounds like you've got a good plan there, I'm gonna do some more walking round my area before taking on something so challenging again. Loved it though, great experience.

@@TravelTrekRun I was lucky that I didn't have many time restraints. Yes it was amazing, there's a 81 mile walk through essex that I'll probably do near winter time (no crazy hills) and then probably the coast to coast next summer. Have you got any plans in the works or still resting up? (My ankles are still very sore).
@TravelTrekRun
@TravelTrekRun 2 жыл бұрын
I recovered quickly, but that's probably down to all the training, and the fact I only did two days! I like your trip ideas; coast to coast is one I have looked at. I would also like to do Hadrian's Wall (in a day - lots more training needed!), but for the time being it will be trips to Dartmoor or the Brecon Beacons, my closest mountains.

Nice video. I plan to try this this summer. Unsupported. I was wondering about the water sources, so it will definitely not be easy, but hey, wont know if I dont try. My longest unsuppoted was 100km, longest without sleep 189km. Big challenge ahead.

Only just come across this, I did a SOBO from KY in July 2021 and had difficulty finding water in the Cheviots, I filtered water from stagnant pools and had no problems, trust your Sawyer Water Filter, they work. (I was a microbiologist).

Is it still the most difficult/challenging long distance path in the UK with al those flagstones? I've walked the C2C, and the few parts with flagstones were the easiest parts...
@TravelTrekRun

The flagstones only cover a small section of the trail, but I'm sure they make it easier.

fantastic effort, shame it was the water issue that called it, but dehydration not to be messed with, but does asking ppl for water from say, a pub or house make it supported?
@TravelTrekRun
@TravelTrekRun 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I was working to the philosophy on the fastestknowntime.com/guidelines website. Asking for water or stopping at a pub would make it Self-Supported, but that could also include purchasing supplies at local shops and staying in hotels etc. which for me takes away the challenge. I like the idea of taking what I need with me and not relying on others. I think it would still have been difficult even at a wetter time of the year. If I was to do it again (which I'm not currently planning on) I would do it supported and look to get resupplied every few days, but still camp and not stop at pubs etc.

@@TravelTrekRun ah..didnt realise there was a website for FKT's, nice..looking at dartmoor (my neck of the woods), surprised theres no Perambulation of Dartmoor listed, actually doing the Dartmoor Crossing this weekend, doubt I'll get anywhere nr that time tho..lol, but its more of a fastpack "how far can i go in a day" test

@@TravelTrekRun I don't hike under this ethic, so forgive the question, if it is silly. Would taking an extra bladder (1l or 2l) have been an option, to extend waterless distance? I understand 1L = 1kg, so if you have to pare back to minimums, I can see why not. Would it not be worth the weight?
@TravelTrekRun
@TravelTrekRun 2 жыл бұрын
@@IfUfindthisURlost yes that's an option, but I already had 2L with me, and my pack weighed 13kgs. I had originally planned the trip a month earlier but had to postpone it and I underestimated the lack of water sources, if I was to do it again I'd probably go earlier in the year so water would be more abundant and I would not have to weight down an already heavy pack with more water.
@IfUfindthisURlost
@IfUfindthisURlost 2 жыл бұрын
@@TravelTrekRun Thanks for the reply. I didn't realise your pack already weighed that much, (considering it looks quite compact), so you would notice the extra weight of water. Great effort on the first day, seeing you get to stoodly Pike, which for me was day three, I was gobsmacked.

@esuomz many years of gathering the smallest lightest kit and prioritising small lighter kit over comfort, there was also a large stretch pocket on the outside of my rucksack that was bulging with food! My kit list can be found here: lighterpack.com/r/oumitf and when I find the time, I will be doing a video on my fastpacking kit list.

Thanks for the interesting, enjoyable video. Until you have tried something like this it’s difficult to understand what effort is involved when you are sat at home on your backside. So well done for trying and what you actually achieved, preparation for another attempt? Please consider another video on kit, lesson learnt etc. I for one would be interested. For example, might sound obvious and a little patronising but is meant with polite respect- why did you choose not to take a water filter? Or did you.
@TravelTrekRun
@TravelTrekRun 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comments. Not planning on another attempt at the moment, one of the things I didn't enjoy about the route was the large amount of time spent in the countryside, I prefer to spend more time on the moors and mountains. I will hopefully be doing an updated kit list soon as I made quite a few changes from my previous fastpacking kit list video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zqmac3SsZrdlsM0. I did have a water filter (9:25) a Sawyer Mini, it started clogging up with the dirty water when I had to take water for less than good sources. There were also many sources that were brown and muddy that I didn't even attempt to drink from.

Not sure why you thought you couldn’t get water. At the point on the canal you explained you thought it was a river on the map there is a pub. There is also the boat yard you passed. If because of your unsupported idea you couldn’t do it fair play but there is water to be had.

Thanks, I was trying to do the trip unsupported, so no outside help including not using shops etc. to restock en route. That's why I had 8 days worth of food in my pack and was just getting water from natural sources like streams and springs.

Why "kilometres?" We use "miles." Maybe you could use miles on your next attempt, and show "Kilometres" on screen for none UK watchers? Just a thought. I'm not trying to be "passive aggressive," and wish you well, pun intended, in your next attempt. A little advice, take in more fats, and not sugars, and or carbs, that will just give you spikes and troughs. NOT medical advise. 👍😎👍m-E-m

Thanks for your comments. I use Km's as that's the grid squares on topographical maps here in the UK (both Ordnance Survey & Harveys) they are 1km by 1km. I'll try to use miles as well...I'm already trying to remember to use M / Ft for my heights. My diet is a work in progress and always has been!
