Dude... it still blows my mind that you can hop in your little plane and fly to this massive mountain in half an hour. Quite the commute !

Wow...what great and vast beauty.

Thank you. I was surprised how "dirty" some of the summit glaciers were; it looked like there had been an eruption.

Well, that was an absolutely riveting flight. I love how you pointed out so many features. Since I did the Wonderland Trail and it took so long, it blows my mind that you can just fly around and around the mountain in no time flat. Thanks for mentioning the Osceola mudflow. I had forgotten that Steamboat Prow was a remnant of the former mountain. My dad was the one who came up with the theory that the Osceola was a mudflow rather than a glacial deposit. He came up with this idea back in the 1950s. The way the whole surface of the Osceola was so flat it seemed like it should have flowed into place. When he came up with the idea of a gigantic mudflow he didn't know yet that it came from Mount Rainier. But over the course of years he and his colleague, Don Mullineaux, both of them in the USGS, followed it up up up and found remnants of the Osceola atop Steamboat Prow, proving that it came from Mount Rainier. Their findings were quite controversial at the time but obviously it became a known fact. My dad's name is Dwight "Rocky" Crandell. I'm going to send this video to quite a few people who are obsessed with Mount Rainier and/or flying. Kudos for this amazing trip. I hope one day you can make it over the summit. Maybe you already have!

Haven't made it over the summit, yet! I'm okay if I don't, but it would be super cool. Thanks for your great comment and I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I had wanted to make this flight for a long time, and the conditions on this day were wonderful. I don't know if you're familiar with Nick Zentner, but my wife and I enjoy his videos. He's a geologist at Central Washington University and talks about all our cool geology around here. A buddy of mine and I did the Wonderland Trail in 2005. Two very different ways of enjoying The Mountain, but both awesome! thewonderlandtrail.blogspot.com/

I have had my luscombe 8e with the stroker engine conversion (c85 with o-200 crank/cylinders) She apparently does mid 90s in hp I have 1 center tank, 1 right wing tank Had her up to 10,000 msl a couple of times. I have the marvel carb. Hand prop. 615 lbs useful load. I have had her just about everywhere except the mountains, as I live in the Midwest. 18 months ago I had zero tailwheel time Now I am at around 180 hours tailwheel Enjoyed her a lot so far! Great video!

That C-85 engine performs really well. I'm impressed. Your GPH is very economical. I would be afraid of a freak wind at the summit. Fly with caution and you can fly another day. The Boost Oxygen is a great idea.

Fabulous scenery! At 11:58, is that a series of fumaroles? Or is it just the snow sublimating then condensing into a cloud?
@jayphilipwilliamsaviation2 жыл бұрын
Hi, Mark. I believe the only fumaroles are at the summit, so I think that's probably just steam from the sun evaporating snow and ice. It does look like a vent, though!

Love the channel! I'd love to hear your thoughts on the Luscombe after almost a year of ownership and quite the adventure! Potential Video?

Howdy! Thanks for your interest and for the question. I put a brand new panel in the plane, among other upgrades. I'll do a video about the panel, and I'll go ahead and give general thoughts about the plane, too. At this point, I've had the plane about 3 years! It's been about 27 months since I got my private and I have about 300 hours now. My experience is limited, but I'll give my thoughts.

Did you strip the white paint off the tail? I just got done with polishing my Luscombe, and I only have 2 words… Paint it. 😂
@jayphilipwilliamsaviation2 жыл бұрын
Hey, Darin. Yeah, I stripped the paint off the tail, above the cabin, and the ailerons (those 3 areas were white). I was planning on polishing it, then putting the stripes and "S" in blue. However, the aluminum isn't in great shape, so, after a bit of polishing, I decided against doing that. I do plan on painting it at some point.
