I find it ridiculous that people need to justify getting a "viking" tattoo by finding out if they have some Scandinavian in them. It doesn't matter at all. All that's left is the history and the art, and it's to be appreciated by anyone who finds it interesting. I can understand if you find it intriguing to do research on your ancestry, but that's a whole different thing. It doesn't give you more or less right to get some random tattoo... So, if you really into the viking culture and the art that was born from it, go right ahead!

@@BikingVikingHH you couldn’t be more incorrect. You really think the people today are anything like the Vikings, the Anglo-Saxons or the celts? Societies merge, cultures have been shared and that point in history has moved on. The bloodlines and ancestry has become so diluted that we are virtually a different people all together. What is left is their art, their stories, THEIR history. “Viking people”. Tell me, what’s so Viking about you? I have Scandinavian ancestry, I also have Pictish, Celtic and Anglo-Saxon ancestry, you really think I go around assuming I’m ANYTHING like those people? It’s ignorant and foolish to believe so. What makes sense is the appreciation for the cultures that have been left behind by a people who no longer exist as they did in the history books.

As always, people who have little to no awareness can ruin any concept.. this is true in most cases in society. However, I hate to break it to you, but “cultural appropriation” is literally everywhere and has propagated the exchange of ideas for literally thousands of years, and I do mean literally not figuratively. Also just to remind everyone poor actions in history are not exclusive to one group. Rape, murder and warfare has been done by every civilization and culture in world history, it’s not unique.

If cultural appropriation is a thing, it’s a thing. Period. “This art is free, but that one isn’t?” Sounds kind of convenient, coming from a guy doing viking art for a living, while keeping in step with “the tune of the times”. A bit of cognitive dissonance, methinks. The thing about vikings that seem to inspire people is the artwork, the mythology (which at its core is deeply connected to the lands) and the sheer grit and determination of those Nothern oppotunistic desperados (and the physique: “I have never seen more perfect physical specimens, tall as date palms, blonde and ruddy….”* -am I right ladies? All things that people can admire, relate or Connect with and be inspired by, regardless of culture. The vikings transformed what they learned from their surrounding countries, made it their own and applied it to further their goals. That’s how cultures evolve, how they stay alive. I agree with you Peter: It’s free for all. Because putting your culture in a bubble only strangles it. I wouldn’t want that for any culture. Nice video. I like norse shit, i mean im not a damn pagan or anything but the history is rather interesting and I've become quite fond of this sudo new aged culture that has beeen growing surrounding vikings and such. but, with that said, the vikings people are so fond of are fucking dead LMAO. anyone can do what they want with they're bodies... Imagine an Italian getting mad at someone for sculpting Julius Caesar out of marble, Or a japanese man getting angry for about people writing a haiku. it just seems so silly to me that this is even a topic. felt like this whole video was common sense.

Dude needs to brush up on his Viking history... The majority of shit he said about the Vikings not having a Warrior culture is absolutely false... They were the fiercest tribes of Warriors in history who wanted to stop killing each other so they started raiding other countries... And yes there were other reasons to such as agriculture, population boom, etc why the age began

@Duirfolk3 жыл бұрын
Viking doesnt equal Teutonic/Scandinavian/celtic/Germanic culture in a nutshell. The myths and art existed for hundreds of years before the vikingr tradition existed That being said my mothers side is from Britain and before that Scandinavia. So maybe some Norwegian fell in love with a Briton but Im more than likely the product of rape as are a lot of people in the British Isles. Doesnt mean we are proud of possibly having viking ancestors. On my dads side Its almost exclusively German and Polish. Which is where my fascination with the Germanic/Norse mythology comes from. No matter what it's okay to have the heritage you have and you shouldn't be ashamed but rather take steps to heal your DNA if it's something you feel called to do.

Ummm…okay so wasnt it the vikings that finally created a unified britain (like after all the fighting under Alfraed , Edward, Aethelstan, Edmund, and Edward the second) wasn’t Edmund pushed all the way back by the Irish Viking King (Cnut i think) to Just Wessex again, and the rest belinged to Daneland. And then didn’t the norman viking descendants re-conquer it all in 1066. Basically my point is that if you are going to take a “cultural appropriation” stand against people getting a tattoo, couldnt you make the same argument abojt maintaining the UK as one nation?

I have no Scandinavian blood in me, I do not claim to be a Viking and never will. I’ve taken the time to learn and converse with a lot of people before I got a “Vegvísir” tattoo. It’s often misunderstood as a compass and it’s not. The Orgins are unknown and it was popularized by Christians. The meaning of “finding one’s path” is what got me to get it. Not anything to do with Vikings and I got a raven over it for “If I ever get lost again the raven will guide me”. I know my intentions and I also know that I may get a lot of turning heads or conversations about it. The biggest reason I got it, is because in 2017 I felt lost as a person and failed a suicide attempt and after years of recovery for my mental and finding peace is the reason I got it. And I know that it may not actually mean that, because there is no true way of finding out. But, I’am glad to converse and have open dialogue with anyone who may question my intentions. I say all of that, to say thank you for your video, this is was very helpful and also very enlightening thank you.

It's not cultural appropriation to get a tattoo from a culture you appreciate and research the meaning of what you're getting most of the people who get upset about cultural appropriation aren't even a part of the culture they're getting upset for so it's stupid. I have galdrastafir tattoos I'm not Icelandic but Icelanders don't care I have them they actually think it's cool that have them and appreciate their culture enough to get them and actually know the names and meanings of the galdrastafur I have on my body.

A lot of the teachings of havamal I find not only applicable in a contemporary context but actually forgotten wisdom. I think to look back on what we have factual evidence of in the archeological record, that is, runes being used primarily as an alphabet (not magic), an honor based society focusing on the warrior mindset (as was necessary at this period in mankind’s history), and worship of heathen gods in a vary basic way, theres a lot that can be gleaned which is still relevant. I also feel you failed to remove your personal bias towards frustrations with politics in this video, and that was kind of annoying to hear for 20 minutes. With that being said, at about 15 minutes you finally made some pretty solid points. I believe the biggest point that you failed to make is respect. You cant culturally appropriate if you seek to understand and participate respectfully. Oh and by the way, i will gladly continue to “polish my guns”. That doesn’t make me right wing or even a trump supporter. I actually voted against him both elections. Could i call you uninclusive because you sought to put me in a box based around a single belief you don’t agree with? Well by your logic, yes. I did again really like the points you made about art being appreciated, and about how the nazis corrupted symbolism. Also, people are still easily scared of animals and drawings of them. I can name plenty of people with phobias of snakes, spiders, bugs, etc. I hope you dont take this as me shitting on you but more as constructive criticism. This video had so much potential and i just felt like i was having woke virtue signaling ideals regurgitated at me for 20 minutes which is not why im here. Also, yes i am using woke ironically here and yes that is a thing where people take away from valid points with bad arguments under rhe guise of virtue. There is nothing partisan about that.

I’d say it’s better that someone gets a tattoo of something that they have an energetic connection or belief system around, regardless of genetics or historical heritage. If it resonates, go for it. If it is only to define your identity as different to others, then leave it behind as there is no positive gain in dividing ourselves based on genetic heritage - that smacks of eugenics.

I’m second generation Scottish American, and have 500 years of my families ancestors documented. I have also taken DNA tests and I have Scandinavian ancestors. Likely do to most of my family being from the highlands and the Nordic influences during the Viking era. That said, I couldn’t care less about cultural appropriation. That whole thing is silly, and pushed by turds. I see black woman all the time with blond wigs and colored contacts. I’ve never given it a seconds thought. Just like I’ve seen whites with braided hair. Your ancestors are dead, they don’t care either, and if your heritage defines you as a person, you need to do better. There’s more to the world.

This video is one of the best when it comes to getting Norse tattoos. I used to question if getting Norse tattoos would be culturally appropriation but you said it perfectly. That they stole everything else so you can “steal” something from them. I’m a black man with dreads and wear a mjölnir but people sometimes tell me “you’re black tiu can’t follow that religion” and in counter to that I tell them that Jesus was born in Palestine therefore he’s middle eastern and by going with their logic I tell them they can’t follow him. They then begin to realize that what they’ve said is idiotic. Getting off topic but you’ve made ALOT of valid points. Now I won’t lie, I wanted to learn more about Vikings because of the show Vikings. I knew it was a show but wanted to learn the real history behind it and as you said they were assholes but it’s their stories, magic, artwork and mythology that make it special to me personally

Do We imagine that Vikings , in their wide ranging seafaring intercontinental trade routes, didn’t appropriate from whatever they chose? Additionally, ancient lore indicates that Odin moved north with the Europe Iron Age tribes and altered over time. So really even Odin belongs to all of Europeans at last from the alps northward. But, to appropriate is to appreciate.

@@NorthernBlack I respect that you respect other cultures. I myself collect things that carry cultural philosophical significance that I agree with. I was only pointing out the general blanket statement you made that oversimplifies the murky waters between cultural appreciation vs cultural appropriation. I think intent needs to be brought up more when people talk about this. If someone from one culture values and appreciates something from another culture is it ever ok to express that or is it always off limits? Can someone from Japan wear a cowboy hat? Is it ok if a middle eastern wears a kilt? What about a white woman with dreadlocks? What if all these things are done as an expression of respect for another culture? Where does the line get drawn? I don't think belonging to a majority culture automatically excludes you from being able to connect with a minority culture. It's not that simple and clearly you don't actually believe that either.

This is a very interesting conversation about cultural appropriation, and I largely agree with most of it. In my view cultural appropriation ethics loses its meaning when you move beyond discussing sacred objects or clan or tribal identity objects with a highly specific connection with a specific group of living people where there are specific cultural rules around the use of the object. For example, I would not buy a totem pole unless it was made by a Pacific Northwest artist for me in such a way where both he and I are following the cultural rules the tribe where the imagery is from. Some Native American cultures take great offence when white people display their artwork without permission or outside the cultural parameters of the object. Others find it as a source of income for the community to sell their artwork. The rules for navigating this with a specific culture in mind is a legitimate conversation. However, much of the current conversation about cultural appropriation leads to such a spiderweb of logical conundrums to make it pointless nonsense. Most of us, especially in the USA, are ethnic muts. We live in a globalist society where everything is an amalgamation of cultural stuff from all over the world. Here, in SE Georgia (USA), I can go to a Chinese restaurant full of cheesy reproduction Chinese artwork. One could argue that everything in it is cultural appropriation. Yet the people who own the restaurant often are of Chinese heritage if not immigrants themselves. And, of course, the cheap reproduction artwork probably was mass produced in China or some other Asian country. Another point needs to be made. For many while Americans that Viking tattoo on the arm may be as much a statement of white supremacy as the Confederate flag tattooed on the other arm. Just saying.
