for those who are fearful of getting started i suggest that you get to do a friend or neighbours small site to get experience. So you can demonstrate for real whay you have done...then show that to a new person...offer to help someone or small biz owner for low cost abd they help u get started but use them as a testimonial latr if it goes well. try a small restaurant or single owner biz..call them and offer to help them. That how i got started. I still have my first biz owner as a client. Get experience by getting started. i called up a business I saw Advetised in a local newspaper service trades ads section.

The problem I have is every business owner I've talked to wants a site that they can update and edit themselves without having to look at that scary code. Therefore they just do it themselves with wix or some other drag and drop platform cutting me out of the equation.

Well what can you offer that wix doesnt. They dont understand what looks great where to place things. How to work with google organically..how to get there website to show up. All they have is a pretty billboard in the desert. They wont get the results when the competition comes to town. You have to personalise the journey for them. Help them with the marketing..they dont know that...hopefully you do. They need to be freed up to do their business...not so there website. Perhaps you are going for cheap low end clients...you need tolift your game..and mindset. I found cheap clients are not the easiest to work with.

I know HTML,css, bootstrap and a little bit of jQuery. What is stopping me from becoming a freelance wordpress designer is FEAR. I fear what if I don't deliver the product the way the client needs. What if I fail and they give me a negative rating. Do you need to be super comfortable at the languages you know before jumping to freelancing? How much experience I need?How will I know I am ready to take the leap?

As a developer, my answer would be piggybacking on what the OP said. The end client wont know what you are talking about so in reality, and being fair to the paying client, all you have to do is to be able to deliver what is on that PSD/design. Once they approve a design, it is your job to provide it and turn an image/psd into a website/project. That said, as to knowing wether or not you feel comfy, the true answer is that, once you "feel comfy" and once you realize how much you DONT know, you will NEVER feel comfy lol. All you have to do is just have a decent understanding in how the technologies you are involved in work, and wether or not you can churn out a working copy. If you can then GREAT, keep building on that, if you cant, then keep working on it until you can. If you are nervous about a bad review or whatever then take a few free projects and build your confidence.

The best way to learn is by doing. Go to websites like SKILLSHARE and UDEMY and LYNDA.com etc, and find projects for you to do. Once you feel decent(you will know), then id focus on building your portfolio based on entry lvl jobs like friends/family/or free work etc, all you should think about is building that portfolio with at LEAST 10 pieces/links. Once you have that, focus on getting an entry level job, there are MANY. Depending on where you live the pay will be different but all you care about at that point is experience. At first it theyll give you BS work etc while they get used to you and start trusting you with bigger jobs n more responsibility. I promise, after a year, you will feel like a god lol. Then, rinse and repeat by learning new stuff. Good luck!

I also share the same problem! I learned the HTML5, CSS3, Bootstrap & jQuery so easily but finally got stuck when I entered into learning JavaScript (more specifically the Vanilla JavaScript). I'm actually a self-taught CS learner. I'm afraid of my JavaScript skill... I suck in JavaScript.. I know the basics of JS but find myself lost when i try to figure out the complex JavaScript algorithms or problems as such. And some developers out there suggested me once that, only learning HTML & CSS will get me nowhere. I'm from a non-CS background & I also have some pressure to complete my graduation on BBA.. Sometimes i think of quitting programming & switch career but at the same time, part of me don't want me to let go leaving my passion for Coding!

Businesses don't care what you know what they care about is what you can do for them. How can your HTML and CSS skills benefit a business? Marketing the "languages" to a business as freelancer is waste of time because most people don't know what JavaScript does vs C vs PHP and the worse thing those with a little bit of knowledge are dangerous, i.e. They hear jQuery and want jQuery even if CSS transition can do the same thing with lighter load.

Love your train of thought there. Found it a bit difficult to apply in the search of a first job because, as you said yourself, these are professionals and a good portion of them seem to have fallen in love with their technology or worse, outsource the initial hiring process to an HR person.

If i may ask: Why do you start the video with a very long patreon ad? Wouldn't it be better to "get on with it" and make a small segway inside of the video and then post the add at the end?. If you have tried with the patreon ad at different parts of the video, what is the difference?

Potentially. I will say in different mediums I've worked with having promos at the beginning tends to work better. Not always, though. I'm about to completely change everything anyway.

I do have a query however when you say it doesn't matter how you complete the task.. say if you design a site as to the client's demands, so that part is fine, but the code itself is a mess and makes it hard for any future developers? I spent two weeks learning the basics of html and css. Super easy all you need to understand is the basics . After that you can google the css syntax for anything. I use Bootstrap studio to quickly structure a website then edit the html and css according to the project.. Got my first client that same month.

I never sat down and just focused on learning WordPress development. I picked it up in bits and pieces as I did other stuff. So, it happened over the course of several years. But, I'd say if you sat down to just learn it, you could get to a proficient level in a few months. But, the real deep learning will coming from working on projects, with clients, etc.

never mind! this was 10 months ago ! the start was rough but then it was easy tbh after the first couple projects (ratings are the key) ! but i still believe that idians are a probleme in a way (i don't mean anything bad) but 20$ in india is more than 20$ in europe for example! so they usualy charge a lot less which makes it harder to get a project.

Pure coders will always get the top 20% of clients. Saying that a pure coder doesn't necessarily think about how something is used is very incorrect. As a software engineer it is what I mainly think about!

Ok so first... the 20% thing is an opinion not fact unless you have some research to point to. Opinions are fine, but I happen to disagree. The people who tend to get the top 20% of clients are the people who are good at marketing themselves. As for the rest of your comment... I'll have to go back and listen to the exact words I said but I don't think I said pure coders don't "think" about how something is used... my point was they tend to be more into the code. That's what they love and don't really enjoy working with clients or actually building websites. Whereas, site-builder types tend to be much more into working with clients and seeing a site come together. And, I hold to my belief (which it is a belief) that those two groups will migrate towards tool-building and tool-using respectively. Of course, I'm generalizing... but that's sort of the point.

The only languages I know are SQL and PHP which are mainly oriented to database management. I am working on learning Python to add to my business skillsets. I am primarily focused on backend development, but that is because I have on interest in learning what a webpage should look like or interactive graphics. But I do know how to create databases that store and allows for easy querying of information. Coupled with my BS and MS in Accounting, I can generate data and financial statements that offer the best pictures in order to make the best decisions.

In all honesty, I would say this is wrong. If you have no idea what you are doing you are highly susceptible to XSS, XSRF, MySQL injection, Stack Overflow or a plethora of other web attacks. And as an offerer of services you can't pin the blame on the tools someone else has coded, because in a clients eyes you are the responsible party. You are the one who made the site and was paid.

That's just not been my experience. I know plenty of people who primarily know how to use tools and don't code and have no trouble getting clients who are rational about what they can and can't do. Further, I always disagree that something you code from scratch yourself is going to be more secure than a tool like WordPress that's used on millions of sites, constantly tested and poured through, supported by a community of 1000s of developers, etc. Yes, the ideal is to know how to code and be good at using existing tools... but I've never denied that. The point was that there's room for both.
