I was surprised to see a whole colony of red eared terrapins basking in the sun at our local country park. They are obviously doing well in the UK.

Majority of the canals also seem to be home to more an more after people have dumped them. Glad to see their thriving though.

Like my man said, most are from being dumped which is such a shame. :(

I live in the Netherlands so our climate is similar to eachother. I'd say the only turtles I like to keep are species found in western Europe or Canada because then I know they'll take longer winter rests. Keep them outside year-round but in the winter I put them in my shed in a box of wet mos and leaves at a constant 7 Degrees Celsius. It doesn't take electricity and all my turtles are rescues so it's nice they can show they're full natural behaviour.

There must be turtles that thrive not just survive in uk some states In America that have multiple turtle species that have 6 month winters and they hibernate during that time beneath the ice surely they could handle it here my pond dose not even freeze over completely ?
@GibbonLord6 ай бұрын
I take them in before freezing point put them in a box with wet moss and leaves and keep it at 7 Degrees Celsius. It only takes up some beer space in the fridge.

Do you know of any good basking lamps for out door use? I’m looking to transition my yellow bellied sliders that I’ve had for about 15 years now into an outside pond with heaters to keep it farm through the year. Just need a good basking lamp that would be suitable for outdoor use
@IsaacWiley Жыл бұрын
I mean if you are UK you probably dont need a basking light outside in summer months, I dont have much experience personally keeping turtles outside but you could always hibernate some species, or heat the water to keep pond active?

I have a question, is there a store that sells a turtle or tortoise in eastern UK? I’m moving to Colchester in a few days so that’s why I’m asking.

What water should u use in their tank especially for baby ones
@IsaacWiley2 жыл бұрын
Use the water out your tap, test it first to check its values and then I suggest using a water conditioner like reptisafe to make it all good. What species of turtle do you keep?

Question - I was looking for a temp pond to keep my fish in during a move and saw 2 terrapins being given with one (it's smaller than I'd keep my fish in and filthy, maybe 300L?) It's currently bouncing between -5 and 1 degrees here, I have a spare cycled 200L tank with a 2000LPH filter on it, would they be okay in there temporarily if I modify it for them? Or are they better being left? They also have no access to land as its a raised pond, it just doesn't feel right to me based on years of rescuing animals but I've never dealt with terrapins so could be wrong!
@IsaacWiley Жыл бұрын
Awesome question, do you know what kind of terrapins or turtles they are ? I mean you could clean it up and stick a heater in it ? But if turtles have already been kept outside and are adults in the same environment then might be alright. If I could know the turtles and how they been let it help me in giving advice ahah You could possibly put in spare tank set up, you can also get some great massive tubs from local b&q or hardware store, like I have for hanzo, they are cheap as well. And yes you are right they need access to land so they can bask if they want to. Let me know what you think and if you have any more information . 😁

Can musk and painted turtles survive a pond that has frozen over? And would putting a shelter at the side of the pond make a difference for them or would they choose to just stay in the frozen lake ? (If they can)

@@IsaacWiley In the minuses for sure, I live near Manchester. Would I have to bring them in for the winter or could they survive outside? Thanks !
@IsaacWiley2 жыл бұрын
There is always risks when leaving turtles outside in a colder climate such as our beloved UK, some people have success, other not as much. I don’t have too much knowledge in this area but will do some research for you. Personally I would only put adults outside and then bring them inside if it’s going to be a harsh winter. I know people leaving turtles outside and they have no issues but you don’t want the frost to get to your pet. Some species can do quite well with the cold such as the Japanese pond turtles and sliders which are surviving in the uk. You could also put a heater in the pond outside but this could be costly… You could always build an indoor pond ? Let me know your thoughts ?
