Holding Octodorum (minor settlement on the north west of Mediolanum) and Aqua Sextia (Major province on the south west of Octodorum) is a good idea. You need Iron for some of your army techs and the Eastern Roman tends to lose theirs and Aqua Sextia has the grape resource so you can keep it taxed and fed and use both of them to gather growth points for when you do your inevitable reexpansion for their respective provinces. Remember the fewer settlements you hold per province the quicker they gather growth. CA logic there. :P PS: The Warhammer strategy where you can bait barbarian stacks by sitting in high success chance ambush spots can work, since they get a campaign map movement bonus. You sit outside your settlements in a forest and reinforce range, they rush in for an easy settlement sack and you can attack them on your turn when they get close.

I just finished the WRE campaign! I used the same strategy but I retreated to Spain and I kept Mauretania, everything else burns. The first 50 turns were crazy as endless armies show up on the Northern border, but I managed to hold on and built up a decent economy in Southern Spain and Mauritania, and later went on to restore the Empire :D Most fun campaign I had, it was intense of course. I feel that Italy, being at the center of the map, is more vulnerable than Spain. Even when I played Barbarian tribes, I tended to migrate to Spain and build up my Kingdom there. Also I've never seen Huns venture that far west into Spain.

WRE starting strat: Immediately make trade agreements with any faction that is friendly enough to accept. Even if you have to pay a small amount of money, it is worth the price to raise relations and try to prevent more wars. Raise taxes one notch to bring in more money and prevent immigration. If anyone is at war with you, try to get other factions to join your war even if you need to pay them a small amount of money, it is worth the price to have the barbarians distracting each other. Delaying wars and distracting enemies is important in the early game because WRE is in shambles. Abandon Britannia Inferior on turn 1. Dismantle all the buildings in Britannia Superior except the ones in Londinium and then abandon the minor settlements. It's not worth the risk of a war and you can't realistically defend Britannia while you are defending everything else. The celts will be out for your land and they will be aggressive. Capturing Roman settlements will make them very powerful so don't give them the option, raze it all to the ground except Londinium. Britannia is the only place you realistically should not try to hold under any circumstances. Move your general in Britannia down to the crossing point on the European side, you will need him later. Now check your relationship with the Garamantians, if they are relatively friendly then you can keep Tripolitania and you should try to improve that relationship because they are the biggest threat in the African front. If they don't like you and you don't think you can reasonably repair the relationship, dismantle and then abandon Tripolitania. If they hate you then abandon it on turn 1. Dismantle all buildings in Mauritania but don't abandon the settlements. Keep 1 legion in Africa, and if you keep Tripolitania then maybe a small navy when you can afford it. Africa has a powerful economy so even though it can be difficult to protect it is worth holding onto. Remove taxation from Insulae Occidentalis but this is temporary, remember to eventually bring back taxation to keep immigration from getting too high, this move is just to keep the islands happy during the earliest turns without having to abandon them or devote resources to protecting them. Start building garrison buildings in Dalmatia, Belgica and Pannonia, these are going to be heavy battleground regions and if you abandon them then the next region will become the battleground so you may as well keep them. Also build garrison buildings in Africa, Raetia et Noricum and Maxima Sequanorum but this is a lower priority. Do not convert to Greco-Roman Paganism, but dismantle all churches aside from the ones in Italia, Insulae Occidentalis and Magna Graecia. For religion, rather than relying on expensive churches we will rely on strategically located governors. Put a governor in Africa, Carthaginensis, Lugdunensis and either Raetia et Noricum or Dalmatia (use a governor you consider expendable for this one, they are in constant danger). When you get a 5th governor you can put it in Italia, but don't worry about it right now. Maybe get some priests to spread religion in Italia and Magna Graecia to prevent paganism from running rampant. For all 4 governors you want to select the Christian Mission edicts. These act like churches for free, and placing them strategically like this lets you bathe almost the entire empire in free Latin Christianity influence which keeps Public Order from going crazy. You can use that church money you are saving to build fishing ports, cattle farms, sheep farms, markets which you can later turn into food markets. Wait for Britain to rebel in Londinium and for Hispania and/or Africa to rebel in Mauritania, then let them attack your cities there. Make sure to manually play the battle to whittle the rebels down to almost nothing and then lose on purpose. Then quickly sweep in with your legions and puppet them, and immediately establish trade with them. If you razed them then you would have to build them up from scratch. This will ensure you have powerful Roman allies developing these provinces for you without you needing to devote significant resources to protecting them. They might even help with any other rebellions that pop up nearby, freeing your legions for more important fronts. If any of the Celtic nations become a problem, you will be able to defend your toehold in Britannia much more effectively with AI backup which will allow you to recapture Britannia much more easily when you have the resources to devote to it. Fight all defensive battles that are not clear landslides in your favor manually. This is a grind especially in the beginning, but you can inflict so much more damage than the AI will. Even if you lose one battle, it will make them weaker for a counterattack or for their next attack which you can then win. You want to avoid losing battles though by fighting manually whenever you can. And whenever practical, set out to destroy with overwhelming force any troublesome enemies that keep striking you and then withdrawing to lick their wounds. The Quadrians are the best early game example. Even if you win the first battle, they will retreat and rebuild to attack you again. So whenever you can muster 2 or 3 legions together, go and defeat them entirely and raze their settlement to the ground so they can never be a threat again. You don't need to keep the Eastern Roman Empire alliance going if it becomes too inconvenient but it is good to keep it going as long as is reasonable, definitely keep relations high and keep the trade going. The ERE is a huge source of trade revenue and they have powerful armies which can be useful for keeping your African and Illyrian provinces safe, but they are also good for preventing Sassanid expansion which helps a lot when you get to the point of having to fight them. It might even be worth it, depending on the context, to sent a legion to help them if they begin struggling, but not at the expense of losing land of your own. Importantly, do not go to war with the Huns under any circumstances. It may be to your benefit when you have a powerful economy to bribe the Huns to join wars against your enemies, like the Sassanids for instance, but it can be expensive. Anything that diverts their gaze from Roman lands. Later game concerns but worth thinking about from the beginning. Personally, I fill out the entire first branch of military reforms before I even start on economic reforms. I don't do any of the reforms that remove Concrete until I have enough Imperial Libraries built in high food provinces that I can be happy with not having any more. And I especially do not do any of the reforms that remove my sanitary buildings, because Aqueduct Networks and Thermae are very useful. I do the economic reforms that unlock important buildings but I focus more on military reforms so I can get ahead of the enemy factions in terms of advanced units.

I think total war games aren`t all that fun to watch with challenges like "can I survive this and that", but rather with challenges like "can I achieve this and that". E. g. reconquering the entirety of all roman lands.

The last time I played WRE in Attila was with the Radious mod and some misc mods added aswell. I held the Germanic border from north to south (there's some really good defensive cities like Colonia and Argentoratum) and left an army garrisoning Camulodunum. I also left two or three armies in Northern Africa and defended Aquileia and the Augusta north of the Alps (Vindelicorum?)I liked the mod because in vanilla, the more you research, your public order and sanitation buildings get "forgotten" and in the late game the garrisons get like Tier 3 units. The trick (and the hustle) is to take advantage of the braindead AI to defeat invasions to cities (many Roman settlemens west and east have unbreakable walls near the town center and cavalry can do a lot of damage in this game) and have your emperor lead an army to fight tribes that migrate through your lands and try to settle. The more battles your monarch win, the more his influence will rise.

I beat a WRE campaign on Hard/Hard a few years ago. It was probably the toughest TW campaign I've ever played. I managed to hold on to most of my land in the initial stage until I could sort out my public order, food, and money problems, but that involved me fighting an absolute shitload of manual settlement battles and force marching armies to provide support to them. It would've been impossible without the garrison buildings because they provide JUST enough crack troops to hold the line and outflank the enemy with scout equites when they were bogged down.

My actual strategy was manually winning every defensive settlement battle. Like. EVERY battle possible. From all strategy games I always perfect my defense first. And the ones that weren't possible, i still did manual and dealt like 1200 casualties with 300 troops. The tribes and barbarians quickly run out of men to push, while they regain power, I consolidate and push back. On ERE it worked even better, the Ostrogoths completely died out after attacking my level 1 settlement twice and I not only managed to hold all provinces intact, but expand into Sassanid empire ( +mesopotamia) and Italia (+ magna graecia). Of course, corruption is eating me alive (50% of my income just disappears) but the faction trait fixes it

I don't know if you know this...you probably do but the best way to beat Atilla and his horses is spear spam as the Romans. The testudo makes them(Spears) almost impervious to arrow fire and cav can not beat spears cost effectively in melee not even on legendary. Remember to testudo though. What you want to do is spam a full stack of spears, pick a corner of the map and then stack spears ontop of eachtoger in say three rows with your generals in the furstest back. What will happen is that Atilla is charge your spears after he runs out of ammo and then just be ground to a paste. But that won't win it for you. No sir. You will loose entire armies(make sure to withdraw your general to not get him killed) but you will take more then enough with you. But again remember that won't win you the fights mostly because the Huns also have infantry(infantry that out classes you by miles) they will kill your spear spam...and you just have to take it. Still, remember that this way you will defeat the Huhs even if a lot of your men will die. Sorry I don't have a better start. Also P.S, don't build melee infantry other than Spears, they are in not good, especially with the AI cheats on legendary.
