Can I learn data science if I am more than 30?

Many times I get this question that I am more than 30 years old, can I learn data science or transition to the IT industry? In this video, I will share 3 inspirational stories about people who learned new skills at a later age (38 or more) and successfully built careers in the IT and data industry. Then I will share my views on if you should learn new skills at later age and what points to keep in mind.

"I am old, i cant do it. Which is fine, then don't complain" Great wisdom of today. I am 32 years old, I started my Data science path 6 months ago. At first, it looked impossible and hard. but once I've started working on my homework and projects, many things are making sense now, even the hardest topics. So, conclusion is that, it is impossible until you actually start doing something about it, being dedicated, and persistent will take down that wall of impossibility. @@dreo6769 currently working in small data science projects, some are for free. Usually senior developers engineer divide the big job amount big group of unexperienced data developers to do some basic work like sorting, collecting, visualising, cleaning the data. Usually the work that they know how to do very well, and relatively easy job, but which can take a considerable amount of time. I do most of things for experience. But that the way world rolls.

I think when you age your understanding capacity also increase if you have been open to new things. When i was young it took me quite hard to understand complicated topics in math's and physics and now i am able to understand the mathematical form of "General theory of relativity" upto an extent.

Okay for all those who are wondering whether it is possible or not. It is definitely possible but with some catch. You can't expect to get a high paying job for first few years, you have to start from bottom-up salaries like 5-6lpa for first initial years. Also, you need to have low ego because a very young guy may be ordering you in your project. Also, companies will definitely prefer younger guys especially in India. So, I feel this scenario is best suited for people in western countries where we see old people from all fields of work easily switch careers.

I agree with most of your points. Regarding your point about Indian job market, let me tell you that things are changing here too. So in next few years you will see more and more employers reducing age based discrimination. Hence if someone wants to learn new skills at a late age, they should just do it by keeping all the doubts aside.

I work for Liberty Mutual and since I started I realized I want to get in to their data science departamento whether data analytics or aim for data scientist. A lot of improvements needed. They’ll pay for my school if it’ll be useful for them but I need something to get into analytics. That depends how you look at it. Well, yes, there are many young data scientists, BUT, non of the have an experience and expertise in area in which you have been working for 15 years, so my advise is that you definitely should learn data science and apply in the area in which you are currently working, since no one will be able to compete both in experience and professionalism.

Our bad luck is , this age criteria comes into picture only in INDIA. In other countries like US, people with age of 60 are still doing coding.

To be honest, in US and UK also there is age based discrimination! Good news is that things are improving fast both outside as well as in India. With more companies taking diversity and inclusion seriously. I bet you will see a huge decline in age based discrimination in coming years!
