This is the first time I come across your KZbin channel. I can’t tell you how much fun I had watching you reupholster that chair. When I was growing up, my mother always reupholstered our sofas, because we couldn’t afford new furniture. I want to say we had the same sofa when I was a kid until I graduated high school…in its many different iterations. The only difference was that she only had a Singer factory machine. She didn’t have a serger or any of the other machines your friend had. She did it all on a regular factory sewing machine that she purchased in New York City in 1971. I have that machine now. She could make anything on that machine, from my father’s suits to my prom dresses, and everything in between…curtains, tablecloths, quilts, and much more. My mother was the kind of person who would see a torn up chair or couch on the side of the road and she would have my dad go pick it up and by the following week, we had a brand new piece of furniture sitting in the living room. I loved that my mother was a recycler of sorts, and I’m so glad to see that there are people out there like you who are learning old world crafts like upholstery. Good luck in all you’re doing to make our world more beautiful!

Your comments made me so happy because that was my mom too. New was not the first option, she always looked at projects from the perspective of doing it herself. I remember when we got two new love seats and Lord knows how much persuading it took her to convince my dad to spend money. But we had the same old brown sofa the entire time I was growing up. That one I don't think she ever reupholstered. But your list of everything your mom sowed made me say out loud and napkins! I still have so many of those. Thank you for warming my heart about how awesome my mom was. I myself follow in her footsteps and try to do everything myself, sometimes I fail horribly but I learn so much. And sometimes I'm so proud of myself and think of everything she taught me.

Tip#1…buy a lesser expensive sewing machine and learn the in’s and outs of threading the machine and bobbin tension and just make pillows with piping. #2…use a block under pedal to control speed until you get the hang of it. #3…start small, ie, a foot stool, ottoman, headboard with tufting, etc. Sewing and upholstery and drapery are so fun!

The piece in the video was was exceptional in that all of the springs, foam, and padding were nearly perfect and needed no repairs. It was also very, very clean under the fabric. I've never had that kind of luck. when I did my first piece I just dove in, took lots of pictures and notes along the way so I could remember how it all went back together and it turned out ok. I winged it and reupholstered sofas and chairs. But they are for us so I didn’t have to be professional. I had to use a hand staple gun. I didn’t have any pneumatic tools. That’s soooo much faster and easier!! I’m a sewer so I figured “how hard can it be?” The measuring for fabric is the hard part. Always buy way more than you think you need. I would def go somewhere to go learn in a couple of days!! Oh my gosh that discount fabric store!!! We don’t have them near me anymore. We had soooo many in Philly years ago. The owners retired and nobody wanted the businesses. Sad but true. I used to also make wedding dresses and these stores in Philly had that fabric as well. There was a whole street dedicated to fabrics. They are simpler than regular clothes. There is just a lot more fabric to move around. That’s ag lol I drive my sewing machine like I’m in a drag race sometimes. I can’t help myself. I’m like how it sounds. 😂. Oh piping. My nemesis. 😂Needless to say none of my reupholstered furniture has any. When I see a great chair on marketplace that I wanna redo if it has piping I’m like “hard no”. She makes it look so stinkin easy!!! You are a natural. Go girl!! Now I really wanna take a class. I have to see if the vocational school still has night classes for adults. Back in the day they had so many but I wasn’t old enough. My dad took car body repair and woodworking. He patched his car and repainted it. He made us a huge toy box. I’d call that a win.

It survived us four older kids and then sat in the basement for a while when it started getting tattered. Mom hung on to it. Ten or twelve years later, when my younger siblings were little, mom has the couch reupholsteted. It had a very sturdy hardwood frame. A professional redid it and it lasted another 25 years. It needs reupholstered again but frame is still good 50+ years later.

The avocado green is 70's on a 50's chair. But it's really gorgeous.

Good job. I am retired now, but remember how hard my mother worked to do reupholster work.

Abby, you’re a natural at doing this. Looked like you learned so much from your friend Crystal. Her studio is incredible. Enjoyed this as an intro tutorial. Great work. Chair shape & fabric selection were beautiful. Be well. Laine, Montclair, NJ.

I love all the detail in this video!! Your friend is such a good, descriptive and patient teacher :) I learned a lot! And I'm so impressed she didn't need a special foot on the machine to make the piping 🤩
