My joke: Well it's pretty intellectual and sarcastic. (Dam, I lost it) ha ha!. It's great to be able to afford Music Television these days! I am here in England, where I noticed. In the bar, in around 1995. In what, was in effect. A youth club in 1995 or 1996 perhaps. Or, a nightclub. We were able to sneak into. Everyone there, seemed to know the lyrics to The Offspring songs! So, looking back, to try and understand. How, did they all know the lyrics? Pirate cassettes? From buying Offspring, Smash? I don't think the songs, got that much radio play, so maybe it was playing on UK MTV a lot? Incredible, how the whole club, seemed to know every word of The Offspring song: Self Esteem. When The Offspring, were signed, to Epitaph Records. So, reading online. The lead singer of this band was linked to Epitaph Records. Which, was a record label shared by. The Offspring and Bad Religion. The singer sounds, like he has a cold. He, has an accent. It's not quite the same, as The Offspring song. Which sounds shouted, but also. Muted. Like, the singer is trying to hit, a certain volume. Not, giving his all. But, trying to sound like he, is shouting, but also attempting to keep the volume down. This song, sounds like the singer is pinching his nose, as he is singing. I think it's maybe a scene for successful people. I don't see it as Punk Rock. More, popular rock of the serious type, who is intelligent and, has a steady job. Mainly male fan base is my guess, like the frustrated Rockers at an Iron Maiden gig perhaps? But, less violent!?

Wing Chun only works when it’s used by non wing chun fighters 😅. Wonderboy can make it work because of his decades of sparring and fight experience. He understands space and time in a way that the average wing chun practitioner will never develop because the art is rarely pressure tested. I’m sure if wing chun schools got out the pads and headgear and actually sparred and tested their techniques they would develop a competent skill set.

This is where you follow thru to where Bruce had his epiphany concerning East meets West in JKD. Hand trapping and jamming are really effective, and blossom when incorporated with western boxing's footwork and body movement. Being able to better control entry into the gap and further into hand range, by preemptively controlling the space and rhythm with trapping, is a pretty nifty tool to have in your arsenal. I really wish more fighters would incorporate the concepts. Bruce knew what he was talking about... ;)

Kudos Wonderboy. A true martial artist. I think what people fail to realize is that when a martial art is pressure tested, what remains tends to be the same. What I mean is that effective technique is effective regardless of origin. You can call it whatever you want. It’s a strike or a sweep or a submission. These things belong to many “styles”.

well the hand traping stuff is unique to wing chun actually and its been used by many fighter in the past but often by accident and so it hasn't been crafted the same way wing chun has. the primary use i see for it in MMA is actually the punch style itself as it will reduce potential hand injury and actually if every fighter punched this way you wouldn't need gloves at all. secondly the way wing chun combines its hand traps with punches actually creates legitimate openings because of how fast it is and the fact that your bypassing there guard

@@netanelohimwarren3629 You do not see trapping in fights. I’m not saying it can’t work, I’m saying it’s not trained or used in a way to prove it’s value. @@colorfulbleeding Yeah straights are nice but you have to set them up. When I throw a series of straight punches I'm really only expecting the 3rd to hit. With both my southpaw bread and butter double jab left cross, or my double shift jab, cross, cross, both southpaw and orthodox its the 3rd punch that is the one I'm expecting to land. The double shift is a good example because I'm anticipating that my opponent will avoid the first 2 punches. On the jab I'm expecting him to step or sway back. On the cross I'm expecting a slip, they cant step back again because the jab forced their weight to the back foot so their defensive option is to slip inside. Its the second cross I'm expecting to land because my opponent has slipped into it. Yeah its nice when the first cross lands but that isn't the goal.

Depending on the style of Wing Chun you're trained in, I think it can be incredibly complimentary to other styles, just not as a standalone style. For example, my sifu in the 90s used to cross-train us in Judo and a "non-competitive" style of Taekwondo. Judo fits well because his style of Wing Chun _heavily_ emphasized tactile sensitivity and the notion of instantly predicting your opponent's move by touch (LOTS of Chi Sau), and perfectly complements Judo (or any grappling style). Meanwhile, the Taekwondo he taught was meant to cover Wing Chun's weaknesses, which were range and kick variety. Today, we've definitely got more refined mixing and matching in our MMA. But for the 90s, I think this was a bit ahead of its time, and was a great starting point for people interesting in not simply making Wing Chun "work," but making it enhance other styles as well.

Sifu Joseph Cheng was my first Wing Chun instructor in 1969 and I practised it for 15yrs before changing to Hap ki Do. He taught us to punch with an upward twist of the fist contacting with the bottom 3 knuckles. We started every session with at least 500 punches so the upward twist became automatic and trust me it is very effective! I got attacked whilst on my holidays in Spain by a dutch man, he came at me with a right hook and I simply slid towards him in left foot forward stance, blocked the punch with a left arm tan sau whilst at the same time punching with my right putting my hip into the motion and at the same time twisting up with my punch. I caught him on the cheekbone under his left eye and it swelled up like an egg immediately as he crashed to the ground! The upward twist is a beautiful way to punch!

This is fun. I'm 55. When I was a young adult, wing chun was discovered in martial arts magazines and presented as the ultimate weapon. All the bodyguards practised it, the Leung Ting guys were beating the crap out of everyone ;-)). Today, a thousand questions are being asked about the effectiveness of wing chun. I find that wing chun is quite effective at close range and in self-defence BUT in my experience, when you get two people to fight, their technical specificities are reduced to boxing. You don't recognize WC anymore. The reptilian brain transforms your style into good old-fashioned boxing.

Kevin Lee is the hardest working man in youtube martial arts. His channel has some of the best content out there, plus I think he does more guest appearances than anyone else. The chain punch is cool, but -- like Kevin said -- its better for that 3rd blow to be an elbow or a clinch entry. You can use Wing Chun trapping to snake your way into some cool standing entries for takedowns, chokes, and joint locks as well. He did a couple videos years ago with Greg Nelson that were really great on the subject.

Wing Chun trapping is fun in Muay Thai sparring because few expect it and even fewer have a good idea of how to counter/defend against it. I use it like a jab opener for an overhand. So knock the hand away -> vertical punch -> and then overhand. The angle/level change and vertical punch is great in general against high guards too. I wish there was a good Wing Chun school near me. I learned the first 2 forms and the wooden dummy form from a local mcdojo but stopped because it is a mcdojo. They knew the forms well but the application wasn't there. So I switched to Muay Thai because there is a great local Muay Thai/Chaiya school.

If I ever train wing chun again it will only be with someone that also has muay thai and preferably also jiu-jitsu but that would not be a deal breaker. If I don't see techniques getting stress tested, no sparring and the sifu is obviously not a fighter I'll immediately leave. I like the system itself and believe there are a lot of really useful techniques hidden in the forms but just knowing the forms is almost as useless as body builder style muscles. @@ragdollcatledaandherbutlerstef That was basically why I stopped training at the only place in my area that offers wing chun. The sifu is in the US and international martial arts hall of fame from her years in the business end of running large martial arts schools but she and her husband are the first to admit that they are not fighters. Her husband is a very talented martial artist but not a fighter. What that means to me is that much of the techniques they know will be unavailable to them once their heart starts racing, they get an adrenaline dump and the frontal cortex shuts off(where techniques not stress tested live). That lack of stress testing is the main reason that we see videos of extremely over confident wing chun guys get absolutely handled by mma or muay thai guys and is not because the techniques are useless. Properly stress tested wing chun is extremely effective for short distance striking situations and especially so in a clinch. My limited wing chun training gave me tons of useful concepts that I apply every time I'm in a muay thai clinch

Wrestling and hand fighting is something that you might want to consider when implimenting Wing chun. I would attempt a takedown when the opponent defends that sets him up to bridge with you allowing you to use Wing Chun if you don't take him down. They are forced to make contact in order to prevent you from taking them down.. Also clinch, low kicks, stomps and sweeps once you are in closer range particularly against the cage. I would lead with Teap, Roundhouse, Oblique kicks as your longer ranged attacks.

I think a huge part of wing chun's failure to be present in modern fighting arts is that people conflate "present with wing chun" as "ONLY present in wing chun" (see Chris Chan Shih Yung and Toby jarrett's comments). The truth of Chinese boxing is that people focus on the 'Chinese' more than they do on the 'boxing', and that the concepts are alive and well even in modern styles. You see Canelo, Lomachenko, and GGG bat down hands in a manner that could conceivably be taught in a WC school. You see Teofimo Lopez use his forearms in a way that is pretty congruent with WC methodology. The theories are sound, but applied wing chun doesn't look like wing chun formwork any more than boxing looks exactly like padwork or the speed bag. Vertical fists, parries, forearm defenses - they're not exclusive to wing chun, they're just also present there. It's a style of infighting, it doesn't work well if you don't have a way to get inside or to break/ prevent the clinch. Anybody who just decides "I'm gonna wing chun this man" is gonna get themselves hurt, but if you are smart about the application then you can reasonably expect to successfully mix it into your striking.

Spot on Anthony ......."but its principles can be powerful with the right adaptations."..........Many Traditional Martial Art Practitioners walk around with a FALSE since of invisibility!!!......It takes a special mentality and insight for practitioners in many traditional martial arts to be able to "Morph" their ineffective training techniques, applications and methods to be applicable in a real nitty gritty street fight........Of course there are circumstances in which any Martial Art can work against a complete inept Barney Phife Goofball....And the last factor in being successful in a real time street fight is that it is THE INDIVDUAL AND WHAT THEY ARE MADE OF THAT MAKES A MARTIAL ART WORK IN A STREET FIGHT .

The chain punching in the first few minutes was very effective because the guy was trapped against the floor. Now standing you're mostly going to be able to trap your opponent effectively by using one hand/arm to pin them against something, hand trap or neck grab. Your other hand can then chain five very fast and powerful punches.

Always felt that wing chun does have potential which can only be brought out by mixing it with something else it’s parry is good the vertical punch can go between guard while protecting your body and the sweeps and knee kicks can destroy someone but the problem is that it is only reactionary and it can’t start and it’s only combo is the chain punches which isn’t that good so that’s why if it is put with anything that can go with anything from boxing to kickboxing to Thai to better them

I like the many ways you use the body in punches in different martials arts. Muay Thai has right leg behind when punching right. Twisting the body. Wing Chun here has center punches in a repeated motion. Bujinkan I trained in has right foot planted and you sink down while punching. Focusing on body weight carried through the punch. Piguaquan has you throw your body forward along with the punch. Similarly to using a forward sword slash like you're throwing it. Throwing yourself with the punch. Funnily we also practiced a barrage technique. But it was instead a three hits in succession with the retrieving hand being flat, as our defense.

You can make certain aspects work - Keep the straight burst short with 3 punches like your Karate Blitz it works. - Some basic parry counters with one hand and strike with the other at the same time (Muay Thai has better defense/attack options though because of the elbows you can strike with elbow jabs while guarding at the same time better) Thats it Wing Chun is overall bad for combat sports or self defense imo lol but its not a bad sport at least they do something.

Wing chun also uses elbows to break free of grapplers or disrupting a close range attack. Wing Chun is all about being in grappling range but quick enough to side step out of the way or punch straight line but from the side of the opponent after moving to the outside of them which requires perfect timing. If you don’t time it right, you’re in big trouble.

@@aidenog7380 it takes about a decade to become proficient enough to handle most opponents who have good training in other martial arts and 20 years to reach a proficiency in which your timing and position are good enough to handle the kind of opponent’s Stephen faces in the UFC so yeah most people will not want to invest that much training for that length of time to reach the skill level required. Which is why you see so many people claim to know Wing Chun or even teach it but they’re not very effective. For example Bruce Lee only studied Wing Chun in Hong Kong for 6 years before moving to the USA and eventually starting his own martial art.

But to your point very few are willing and able to do it. Which is why you have so few actual Wing Chun martial artists.
