Fun fact about Ngerulmud: Ngerulmud (meaning "place of fermented angelfish" in Palauan) is actually the SMALLEST national capital in the world by population! Yes, less people live there than Vatican City. Only 271 live there. The capital of Palau was originally Koror (whose metro area has around 14K people) but under the country's then-new constitution in 1979, they decided to move it to Palau's biggest island Babeldaob. Thanks to a 20-million-dollar loan from Taiwan in the early 2000s, they were able to build a shining new Capitol building for the Palau National Congress which opened in 2006. This is why Palau is one of the few nations that recognizes Taiwan over China. Ngerulmud is the only settlement in Palau that has its own unique zip code, 96939, while the rest of the country uses 96940. Thanks to the Compact of Free Association with the US, USPS serves Palau.

The thing about Nauru though...Nauru has NO official capital. People just label Yaren as the capital as that is where the government offices on the island are located. It's also where the island's airport is...an airport the Japanese had forced laborers build. They moved the indigenous Nauruans to the Truk Islands (now Chuuk State in Micronesia) hundreds of miles away so they could turn Nauru into a stronghold. Although eventually neutralized by the Allies, the Japanese forces there didn't surrender until eleven days after the official surrender, and it was returned to Australian control until 1968 when it got its independence.

For words and names starting with "ng" are often treated as a G with a silent N at the start. But actually it's a "ng" sound at the start, which you find in a word like "sing". English doesn't allow a word to start with it, but some other languages do.

The way I can remember Funafuti as the capital of Tuvalu is: Grape in spanish is "uva" and Fruit in spanish is "fruta". I asume that the capital is FunaFRUTI to releate it with the "uva" that is a fruit" and the country is tUVAlu. So Funafuti = Tuvalu. FunaFRUTI = tUVAlu.

As someone from New Zealand, it was quite painful to hear Jack's pronunciation of most of these places. Still he did a good job trying. In Oceania, most languages (other than english) have the same 5 vowel sounds. In Maori and I'm relatively sure the other ones, a sounds like ah, e sounds like eh, i sounds like ee, o sounds like the o in port, u sounds like oo in boot. Though I do believe in countries (other than NZ) when you put an a next to a u they make the ow sound like most people would say in Nauru. In NZ we say oh instead. Please feel free to correct me, I'm no expert.
@t.c94762 жыл бұрын
Kia ora, I believe you are correct, speaking as a pacific islander with little knowledge of the languages. I do have a background in speaking Te Reo Maori though, via a Kapa Haka group, but the pacific islands have various different languages (People in Tahiti learn to speak french!), all of which are a bit complex to summarise as a whole subject. Hope you have a great day!
