Those spikes look extremely dangerous to sling around, when Dequitem is taking a break from axe-fighting people in the woods to say "I dunno if that's safe, bro," you know you're on the highway to the danger zone. Though if anyone has a chance of swinging those killers around relatively safely, it's probably you. Great vid, take care out there, bud.

A note on your slinging technique: it's faster, safer (and this is the important part), and more accurate to let fly on the first half-rotation than to swing the sling about your head several times. I recommend Pan Slings for some excellent instructional shorts on sling technique.

I think another thing that has to be put into consideration: Accuracy isn't really THAT important on the battlefield. The phalanx (whether Hoplite, Macedonian, or Roman Legion) would be shoulder to shoulder. The skirmishers (which all slingers were really) are just there to cause some casualties, but mostly harass them so that (hopefully) they do something stupid. Even those that missed your 'aim point' would have hit *somewhere* in the mass of enemy... and having a pokey metal spike hanging from your eye is just going to make your day a lot less pleasant.

An idea you can try: a guy at a primitive skills gathering who grew up "primitive" in the wild taught me how to sling by 1st holding it in front at arm's length, like aiming a rifle, holding the stone in the pocket. I found it much easier and more natural then the whirling method. He said it worked for hunting small game, too, because they would 1st see something moving away from them and would relax enough for the sling to come full circle and splat. Dude was hitting cans like nothing.

That was interesting and scarily effective for a first go. Seems to me to really sling those things you'd want a sling meant for them to get the best out of them. I'm thinking something that effectively is holding the torpedo point out as you spin it up and is probably in function a bit more like spring loaded trigger that will release the projectile from the cradle on the end of the string when the tension on the trigger string is released. That would really let you give it your all and should release the dart much more predictably and on target without a great deal of spin - might even stabilise from the aero pressure without any fins.

Huh. Very interesting weapon to try and sling. I'd never actually heard of these sling darts, but looks like I found myself a new research project. Aside from making yourself a custom split sling, I wonder if grooving the thick center part of the torpedoes a bit would increase your trust in the sling holding onto it and if that would make any difference in use.

@samuelbrown34057 сағат бұрын
So I have a stupid idea. I think they might stabilize and spin like a sling bullet if you made it more oblong, like a football. Form some wax or clay along the center of the shaft(giggity) in the shape of a small football and it'll be some sort of primitive discarding sabot penetrator round. When it impacts the clay or wax will theoretically shear off and the sharpened penetrator will maintain momentum and keep going.
@dashrendar53207 сағат бұрын
Haha well to be fair it slaying these things above your head in any capacity is probably a stupid idea haha but that may work. I would need to figure out how to do that in the best way.

What would be hilarious to watch would be to compare medieval weapons to a potato gun which is a weapon you can make from PVC pipe, bbq igniter, hairspray and a potato. I saw some guy test one against a ballistic dummy and he got it to push a potato into its head. Watching him do that made me think of you and I was laughing so hard it hurt. I didn't think of it then but I asked why the Romans and Greeks didn;t use those but I guess probably they used spears also as thrusting weaponry in formations also so throwing would likely be a last resort rather than a first so need for an atlatl guess if they were going to use any distance they'd use bows or machines like catapults and scorpions interesting channel
@windhelmguard529522 минут бұрын
the romans did absolutely throw their pila, not as a last resort but at the start of combat before going in close with the gladius the atlatl likely wasn't used for this because pila are really heavy and the atlatl comes with a mechanical disadvantage when you try to throw something really heavy. in early roman times they even had specialized skirmishers who's entire job it was to run forward throw their weapons and retreat those might have used atlatl, although i doubt it for two simple reasons: first of the atlatl takes practice to use effectively and those skirmishers tended to be citizens who could not afford the heavy infantry equipment so they were most likely labourers who didn't have a lot of free time to train. plus not bringing the atlatl means you can bring one more spear. later the romans made liberal use of foreign auxiliary troops for this purpose (as they started outfitting soldiers with gear instead of soldiers needing to bring their own) and those might have used the atlatl.
