I mean…these rescue boxes are a way for the rare plant shop to clean out their unit of plants that they can’t make money off of/can’t be bothered dealing with/aren’t rare of sought after. they’re not bothered with packaging or spending much time, money or supplies on getting them shipped off. When I first saw the way they wrapped the roots, I though it was a bit sloppy, but when you get 16 nodes on a plant and that many aerials, I don’t think it’s an issue.

yeah I mean many of the aerials were snapped because of how tightly the box was packed.. I think they used the same size boxes for 3 plants or 6 plants 🤷‍♀️ isn't the way I'd do things but such is life!

For £35 I think you got a GREAT deal!!!! A rescue box is a mystery box - no one knows what they will receive. That's what you sign up to when you buy one. I don't think any of them look like they suffered for being bare-rooted in the bag - and if you think about the hundreds of boxes that went out, wrapping the roots individually would have been almost impossible. I'm sorry you were disappointed - maybe this was in part because you'd seen other people's - it's a lucky dip and I'm so glad the plants have found a great new home rather than than the bottom of a bin. If you want to do swaps I'm keen! I love Philos and prefer your box! Thanks for featuring the boxes. I hope many more 'imperfect' plants will find new homes and help make the industry more sustainable. Lots of love my friend xxx

oh yeah I think it was an amazing price for sure! Most of the original roots have actually rotted off at this point so chopping to prop was the right decision for me... I think I just felt a bit underwhelmed in the end because of the service received and that tainted how I felt about the plants 🤷‍♀️

I think the rescue boxes are a wonderful concept, but this specific shop really dropped the ball on both customer and plant care. The packaging was horrendous, and there is no excuse for it, nor for the lack of customer support from a specialised shop like this! Things can always go wrong, but that's when you take responsibility as a shop owner and reach out to your customers. I think most people would much rather be informed that there will a delay, and happily wait a few weeks for a carefully packed parcel, than be left in the cold and receive a box of sloppily packaged plants two weeks after ordering. Emma is 100% in the right here, and I think it's not nice to invalidate her experience, especially as her friend. Her bad experience with the shop does not reflect negatively on your boxes, which again, are a wonderful idea, but on the shop who sold her that box.

I completely disagree with you. I only have a small collection in comparison, but the mystery box I had last year was very poor. Also it took a long long time to arrive and the customer service was poor af. I have since had a better experience buying straight from their website (not a rescue or mystery box). Which makes me think they priorities those orders over others 🤷‍♀️

I waited nearly 6 weeks for my mystery box last year and their customer service was so poor. I love watching Kaylee as I do Emma, Claire and others. However I expected more from such a prominent company.

For 35 pounds, it´s an incredible price for all of these plants. The plants are healthy, no rot, doesn´t look like any pests present and they are only a little "ugly" because of being leggy, but have much higher market value. I think they tried to keep the price as low as possible, that´s why they don´t bother to pack them better and just chuck it in. They could pack it much better, but then the package should cost much more money. I wonder if for such a low price, they even cover their own costs, which I doubt. So all in all, I think it´s a great offer given the low price. If I could get such a package, I would be very happy - so depends on the individual expectations.

I can promise you, many people would die to have any of these plants in this condition. I wasn’t able to get one. She posted a video recently about which and why she’d probably include. She sold most of those particularly because they were growing like weeds and multiplying at a godly rate. I’d almost rather this condition than potted up in a subpar soil with the potential of rot, pests or just a mess. You can basically do whatever you want with them… chop and prop, make a full pot or sell (you’d make your money back selling just ONE of these). But I do totally agree and understand that the customer service experience tainted your excitement, expectations and experience. No contact is worse than news of a delay imo. Just that would have probably given you more piece of mind! I’d it were me, I’d probably feel the exact same way. I’m big on customer service and that totally changes my experiences as well, but the plants really are def worth it. Thank you for sharing and being honest/candid. It’s very rare to find honesty these days. I love your channel!

Kaylee hurt her back and has been working exclusively from home for a couple weeks. She's been doing videos from there. Sorry about the customer service end. Definitely a bummer. But as a small plant shop owner here in the US...that was a great box! Shoot you couldn't get any one of those wholesale here for $35. Loads of inventory to prop. Or save for a plant swap. Look at the silver lining I guess 🤷‍♀️ Bare root is strange... I once had a hoya Sarawak cutting sent to me just free floating in a box. All dry and wrinkled when it arrived. Oddly enough I popped it in some fluval and threw it in a prop box. Bam! All good.

I was quite shocked by the packaging. Why did they think it would be a good idea to put them all together so the roots tangle and there is chance of them breaking as you try to untangle them. Surely they don't arrive to them that way, so it is odd how they would pack them that way. They could have wrapped the roots separately on each plant. I want to give you a hug. I could feel your disappointment. Is it possible all the good plants went first and then whatever was left they sent out as bundles to everyone else. Maybe it wasn't as randomised as they state. Specially if all the plants are the same. I think they maybe didn't want to go through them to sell them as plants as they would have to chop and prop them themselves.

Hi Emma, I think I understand where you are coming from! The communication from customer service seemed to be lacking and I was disappointed on how they were packed. Even at a good price, I would expect my plants to be at least packed in some damp moss and separated, not tangled. The plants looked nice and healthy, but I received what you have along with the lack of customer service, I don't think I would order again. Good luck with the plants, I know you will make they grow happy and strong!!

I guess maybe because you had a certain expectation (in your mind), and it didn't even come close to what you were hoping, along with the cust. service issues, perhaps that's why you felt underwhelmed and kinda disappointed overall. I'm in Sydney and I can tell you that what you received is worth A GREAT DEAL MORE than 35 pounds ( AUD43) so i would have been absolutely stoked with that selection, even if it is all philos. I don't even think we can find a Mexicanum or Jerry Horne here🤷🏻‍♀I hope you can derive some joy out of not only 'rescuing' these beauties but also brightening someone else's life with the opportunity to buy them from/swap them with you 🙏🏼🥰

Interesting video. I don't know what plant prices are like in the UK, but where I am (Florida), those are great prices. Most of them would sell for about $10 a node/leaf here. I'm going to look and see if I can find a similar option near me.

I can understand your disappointed but I did see a video Kaylee made mentioning she hurt her back packaging the first boxes that left her bed bound. Also she is the staff, from my understanding it's just her and Ben so a lack of customer service whilst frustrating is understanding particularly at a busy time. I bought a mystery box a while back and it came packaged the same and I was very happy as I did not own any of the plants. I agree not having plant IDs is annoying. Also I saw a comment on a post she made stating that some of the boxes didn't have the insert due to not wanting to crush the plants. I'm looking forward to seeing how your plants do, the mexicanum is beautiful!

I had a similar issue last year when they did a mystery box. I think I ended up waiting 6 weeks for my box and when it came I was really disappointed, mostly because everything died 😭 I wasn't sure I would bother again but I desperately wanted a blue oil fern and theirs was the best value. It came super quickly and is fantastic. So for me the moral of the story is maybe not to bother with blind boxes and just order what you can see 🤷‍♀️

I had the exact same experience. It was also so sus that the prize plants all went to folks with huge followings on insta. I also noticed that these boxes were so much more carefully packed. All mine were bare root and bone dry and droopy-leaved. Also the fact that some of these plants that everyone seems to have received (e.g., gloriosum) seemed to be perfectly healthy but were plants that had dropped precipitously in price in the last few months… not a good look IMO

Im sad to say i had a very similar experience 😔 The plants took 3+ weeks to arrive (im in the uk), after 2 weeks I emailed the rare plant shop just to make sure there wasn't a problem but still to today I didn't receive any reply 😕 UPS also f up my delivery by just dropping it at a pick up point on a Friday evening, luckily I managed to pick it up just before the place closed and when I opened the box all excited to see which plants I received, they were all squished together to the point a couple leaves were broken and ripped from the way it was packed and bare rooted into a bag like yours 😢 I got 2 rescue boxes but all 6 plants came squished into one box 🤷🏽 I've received some nice plants but I have no idea of what a couple of them are since there is no info of what was in the box... I know I have received a gloriosum, a anturium crystallinum and a anturium clarinervium so I'm very happy with those plants, but as a company that sells rare plants it made me never want to buy from them again as now my expectations from them now are really negative 👎the only nice thing was that I received that nice black top cover with the logo but it quickly went away after seeing the state of the plants underneath 😅 Anyway.. Good luck growing the new plants 🫶🏼

I would’ve felt the same way. Minimal root wrapping and care to separate the plants with paper would’ve been nice. Especially since the other rescue packages you had seen were done better. Apparently in the US, at big box stores, the trend is to have the greenhouse TIGHTLY pack their plants in some sort of finely chopped grass or some substance that looks like it. Probably to hold in the moisture so the plant can survive the trip and a month or two on the shelf without care. So that’s what I came home with over the weekend. Two plants from the discount shelf and one regular one, so I knew I was in for, a rehab session at home. However, I didn’t realize it would take hours to get moisture back into the substrate so I can loosen it up, remove it, and give them good potting medium. In that sense it would be a tossup between bare roots and what mine had. 🤷‍♀️❤

Sounds like they had a lot of excess stock of the same plants that they couldn't care for/ sell quickly enough. Lots there you can do chop n prop experiments or swaps with though :D

I got 1 box and had Jerry Horne (maybe 1/3 of your size 😅), Billietiae (probably, but conflicting identification across plant groups) and Gigas. Also only philos. I do love philos though and didn't had any of them. I was hoping for one anthurium as I want to start venturing out into anthurium but overall felt okay with the box. I also had my delivery pretty delayed and same package. The worst rescue box so far I received from plants from all seasons and I payed £50 for the rare box, so in comparison this one was hands down better and cheaper.

So sorry you were disappointed, whilst on the whole I was happy with my plants, I did get a similar feeling about the bare roots and no plant ids. And whilst only 1 of my plants was incredibly leggy, I still wasn't expecting to do that much chopping and propping. I'd recently had a grow tropicals rescue box and felt so happy for days afterwards. But this one, I don't know, I was really happy with the plant types I got and no doubt in time they'll look glorious, but the experience just wasn't the same. I'd definitely be disappointed with 6 philodendrons, at least I had a anthurium in my philo mix.

How did/why did KZbinrs buy/get 2 boxes when the purchase page said 1 per customer? Did we miss a trick here? 😅 Btw I had Thai bare root from The rare plant shop with a heat pack during winter and she is doing great in lecca. That's with my very basic shelf and set up.

You could of gottten two each of the plants since you got two boxes. Then you would only have three separate plants. They could of been rotted and had no liable nodes at all. I would be thrilled to get that box. Im pretty sure its just her and Ben and i also know she hurt her back while making those boxes so maybe Ben took over and he was just not as careful or precise while getting them together. I really dont know but it could of been so much worse.

true true. Could have been much worse! I have no problem with people taking time off work if they're unwell, but if it's going to cause a delay of over a week, some sort of message would have been nice... just as a heads up that it was going to be longer.

When you chop and prop a plant like this, where there’s aerial roots everywhere…. Can you just plant that in substrate or do you have to prop it in water or moss first? I hope that Q made sense… 😬

It depends if theres enough aerials and if they've dried out. Given none of these had been on poles they will have dried out and you'd have to prop like there were no roots.

Does anyone know if there's plant recue boxes in EU? I assume it is very hard to order plant material outside of EU. I've ordered seeds successfully before but I think plants would be almost impossible from outside of EU since EU requires all sorts of documents...? If someone has information about this I would be happy! I'm from Finland.

Oh my, they packed their stuffs worse than I expected. Could it be the ones with the nice cover were affiliated to them? But at some point I also believe that you might just experience an unlucky situation here, probably the worker who packed yours was in a bad mood or hectic situation that caused the packing looking horrible like that 😂 I'm sorry that you're disappointed. Hopefully you'll get a better experience next time!

I think I remember Kaylee Ellen saying she has a gel she dips the roots in to stop them from drying out. It is a shame the customer service from the Rare Plant Shop can be a bit hit and miss. Hope all the plants do great!

Might be a great deal, but I wouldn't ever order from that shop again. Basically no customer service, horrible packaging... it's like they don't even care about the plants, or the customer. Selling surprise rescue boxes makes these shops a profit they wouldn't have otherwise, so you'd think they'd treat their customers a bit better.

I agree from personal experience this companies communication skills are seriously lacking and let them down badly. They do not reply to emails and their trust pilot reviews highlight this, it is such a shame. 'Mystery Boxes' = clearing old unsellable neglected stock. That said, still a good deal for someone that has the time to bring them on or prop from...

The packaging was awful but yeah I don't buy mystery boxes because you cannot have expectations with them. You can't look at what others get and hope you get similar. You can't look at the list of possibilities and fantasize about getting certain things and I don't like that. I like having a say. I at least like to be able to say "don't send this, this or this because I have it" and rarely is that even an option. To order a mystery box you literally have to be ok with getting ANYthing and im not.

I ordered and bought a P. plowmanii back in 2020 when it was a rush to order to order and the packing was fine but communication a little poor. I get more when ordering rare fishes, a lot more! On customs house she doesn't own and from memory isn't a director of the store. I just can't support the KZbin for various reasons particularly how she deals with hobbies that includes animals, along with inferring that the hobby was better when it was about money. That packing, soo easily damaged! Good deal ish but how much plant prices are crashing. I think a lot of people are getting P. gloriosum, Anthurium crystallinum 'Silver Blush and other plants where the price has crashed massively. Clearing stock that is not higher price tag anymore? Not sure you can charge anymore then £15-20 for some anymore.

@@GoodGrowing It's not a bad price at all, I think from RHS Wisley I paid £7 (Was originally £13 but "dying") for my P. gloriosum, £15 the silver blush. It's great yours is honest as so many with a bigger following might get a better one. I just think the house plant market is crashing and other rare plant markets aren't great for sellers, I paid I think £10ish each for some rare/uncommon Cycas species (seller seems to no longer sell them though). The price is decent, it reflects the industry. I like the fact the hobby is now accessible to more people, other aspects of horticulture are too. Pariso verde (forgive the poor spelling) I noticed at Wisley too, I think maybe £15-20.

Omg it's £35! It's not gonna be packed specially, the roots were protected. You are not going to get something packaged fancy for the money you paid. Waw... a rescue box with 3 plants in either good shape or leggy and therefore with tons of potential profit to be made from them for a mere 12 pounds a piece incl. shipping and this is how you react? Don't ever get a rescue box again would be my advice: you are not about the rescue.

It's a lot more about the rescue for those who buy the boxes than it is for those selling them. Their feelings towards these otherwise disposable plants are clear in the lack of care taken during packing. It's about profit, not plants.

Finally, i really stopped following kayle ellen because she was a "serious" shop and thats why she didnt sell damage/ low quality plants, but im glad to see that she's trying to change that. I don't see why it would be bad for your business to give these plants a chance knowing there's lots of people like us who would buy them.
