"If no one gets hurt is it still a sin?" "It was just an accident."
How can we know if our actions are a sin or just a mistake? Can we be committing sin without knowing it?
Today Fr. Mike details the three elements that must be present for an act to be a sin and helps us grapple with our own sinfulness and God's desire for mercy and reconciliation.

I was taught that we should always end our confessions with a phrase like "for all these sins and others I have forgotten, I am truly sorry".

I had not gone to confession for over ten years when i left the church and the priest i went to confession with said in the absolution that i was absolved of all the sins that i committed and don't recall. That was a real blessing. I would not be able to remember 10 years of sin and if i went down the list i would have been there for hours. I also asked Jesus personally to forgive me for all of it.

Something I learned while in RCIA is that it is very hard to "forget" a mortal sin. In fact, it's very hard to commit a mortal sin because you are making a conscious decision to go against God's word. I think that if you often forget your sins, either you may need to go to confession more often or they were not really MORTAL sins. Just remember, the only sins you need to confess are the ones that damage your relationship with God. Venial sins are forgiven by asking, praying on it, or receiving communion.

@@christiandpaul2022 as long as you truly intended to confess all mortal sin, and didn’t leave anything out or purposely try not to recall some out of embarrassment, or any other bad reason, you did well. It is, however, necessary to confess any mortal sin whenever you recall it the next time you go to Confession. say you’re married and you cheat on your wife, and you’re so overwhelmed by that sin, that, in confession, you forgot to mention that you also watched pornography, once you realize this, although you have been forgiven, it is still necessary to mention it the next time you go to Confession.

The only unforgivable sin is the one you don't forgive yourself for. God can't forgive you if you don't move on from it. Shame is what the devil wants you to feel. The more shame you feel, the more you feel unworthy of God's love. Forgive yourself, go to confession, and live well.

@@AlexanderBrown77 Got it. KJV bible. 66 books. So this is a Protestant response. I would honestly like a Protestant to help answer this, but unfortunately, none have ever been willing to engage. I try not to present this as a "got ya" scenario, but rather an honest and critical concern as to the Protestant stance on Christianity. The Protestant viewpoint rests entirely on the concept of Sola Scriptura. However, in order for Sola Scriptura to be true, there would need to be an intra-scriptural reference as to what books constitue the canon of scripture. Otherwise, how can we know we have the correct number of books, or that we have the correct books? Due to the fact that there is no intra-scriptural reference as to what books constitue the canon, one would have to appeal to an authority that is outside of, and above scripture. This would make Sola Scriptura a false doctrine. If I'm missing something, I'd be more than willing to hear you out.

Mortal or venial both need the three conditions like angel above said, going into more depth. Also, if something is wrong but not necessarily a sin, but I think its a sin - then do so anyway it is a sin for ME! I used to think crossing against light was wrong but NOW I find with impaired vision, in my neighborhood to not cross when allowed because it turns quickly and cars are right there to rush through. Thus, I stand back and then when no cars visible ai quickly get across street. It is breaking thr law but NOT a sin for me as it is so much safer! Dumb example I know!

@@Call_Upon_YAH It's not the Holy Spirit that tempts you to pray against His Spouse, the Virgin Mary. "Pray to" means, in the archaic, original meaning, "ask for." What do we ask the Virgin Mary for? For her to pray to God for us. Just like a protestant may ask someone else to pray for him. When Jesus, on His Cross, gave Mary to the Beloved Disciple to be his Mother, He gave her to all of us. It's through Mary that Christians are ingrafted to the vine of Israel and become children of Abraham. We are commanded to honor our father and the mother, so Jesus expects us to have a relationship with Her.

Wow praise God! I’ve been in your position before- I know it can be really frustrating and discouraging. It’s extremely important that you don’t walk alone in your journey. Find a priest, deacon, religious sister/friar, or experienced layperson and tell them about what you're experiencing, and they can help you find a more balanced view of what is or is not a sin (which may take time, and that’s okay). As one of the saints (I forget which) said: our Lord is not a tyrant. He doesn’t want to rule over us to constrict us. Yes, it may feel like a strain when we give up things that are sinful, but even in this life we will find great joy and freedom in being free from sin and open to love and virtue.

I told my dad, who is 75, that not going to church is a sin and he wouldn't believe me and got hostile. But I felt it would be a sin if I hadn't told him. I told my brother as well and he has the same view as my dad. And I can't force them so I guess it's up to them to decide at some point to go to church. It's hard to communicate with people... Praying and waiting is often the best way. We can talk and talk and it doesn't matter how true what we're saying is, or how well you're explaining yourself, people see things through the lens of their own battles they're fighting, and we need the Holy Spirit to bridge the communication barrier. And sometimes the Holy Spirit wants us to wait, and to trust Him. He loves our families more than we ever could. He would never let His children wander away without finding them and pursuing them. God has His own plan for how to bring them back, and maybe your part in it is to pray for them and pray for the right words to say, but even more to trust God to love them abundantly, and trust Him not to leave the future of his beloved children's souls to the outcome of one dumb conversation where everyone was talking past each other. Don't worry, trust God, it's all handled, everything is okay.

There are so many Catholics who take ‘missing Mass’ lightly as if it were only a ‘small’ sin compared to stealing or killing…or find the smallest excuse to not go…or think watching Mass on TV or KZbin suffices. I think it’s a result of poor catechesis, lackluster example by others and pride. That was so good, incredible. How about a video on whether or not thoughts are sinful and have to be confessed even when we don’t act on them. And perhaps a follow up vid on how to keep mean, sinful thoughts out of our minds. Much going on in the world today that poke and point us to awful thoughts that might lead to sin. Thanks. God Bless us all.

I wonder if emotional reactions are sinful. I know people say getting offended or feeling insulted is due to pride. Is the rude person let off the hook? I honestly think feeling offended is an emotional reaction.

for sinful thoughts it's not a sin unless once you become aware of them you keep them purposefully at the front of your mind. our broken nature means of course stray thoughts which are unkind or impure will come to us, but once you're conscious of this thought, say this either out loud or in your mind: Jesus, Mary, Joseph, help me at least for me, this helps me root the sinful thought from my mind and get back to normalcy.

Yes to the Lord Jesus; in doing Novenas. Luke 21: 29 Then He spoke to them a parable: “Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. 30 When they are already budding, you see and know for yourselves that summer is now near. 31 So you also, when you see these things happening, know THAT THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS NEAR. 32 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all things take place. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away. The disciples: they were transfigured; whenever we have a deep revelation we are passed from death unto life. This is also how the revelation of the novena came. That 9 days later they saw the Lord Jesus talking with Moses and Elijah; and this is the Mt transfiguration. When we pray; we are in company with angels and saints Mary, Joseph and Jesus; - like Jesus was; and you do not need to die: to be in contact with heavenly witnesses. The story of fig tree was taken from the story of the Songs of Solomon. The lover disappears. And we never know what happens next. Jesus fulfills what happens next; and he uses this very story from Solomon.

The thing I struggle with more is, “Lord, I think I know what you want, but I’m not sure.” Example, haven’t said my daily rosary that I have committed to doing as an auxiliary member of Legion of Mary, but it is 11:30 PM. Long and busy day and I need rest for tomorrow. Does God want me to say the rosary or go to bed?
@jeanblythe1595
@jeanblythe1595 11 ай бұрын
I will answer you the way I handle that situation, since this happens to me sometimes. Yes, God wants you to say the Rosary, and you have made a commitment to say it. It is late, so in this case I say part of it, the opening prayers and a decade. Then the next day I finish that Rosary before saying the one for the new day. Sometimes it helps to break up the Rosary into decades during the day so you can still say a whole one, just not all at once. If the Rosary feels like a shackle, you are not saying it out of devotion and love. It should be something you look forward to. It will still be a struggle sometimes. Do your best. I struggle unless I pray with someone else--there are daily Rosaries on youtube, so you don't pray alone. That makes a tremendous difference. God bless you.

Thank you Fr. Mike for the video. However, I don’t see how, on the criteria and examples you present, the instance of failing to make it to Mass because of the car problems would be a sin. To use a phrase from later in the video, an evil occurs (missing Sunday worship of God), but it seems that the person (as you describe them) did not choose that evil intentionally at all. Happy to receive correction or clarification :)

Your vocation then is to live a Single life. I wanted to be a religious sister, but they said no. I never met the right man to marry. The one vocation I didn't want was to be Single, but that's what He picked. Join the Legion of Mary, or Bible Study group, or help pick up dropped bulletins and Missals after Mass--you will be helping out. The church has a place for everyone, even if it can definitely feel lonely at times. God bless you.

I have kind of a hard question, not sure if you will see this but: Thought out Human history we have had people and/or the church tell us what is and is not a sin. Some of the things that were labeled a sin just seem really really...really not a sin. For example, Timothy 2:11-15 where its considered sinful for a women to teach/preach. I can of course find more examples but I guess my question is between scripture, church and our own interpretations how do we really know whats right?

It’s an interesting question. Obviously there can be no mortal sin without consent but, the Eastern Orthodox have an interesting prayer about all sins both “voluntary and involuntary” I think this is an academic exercise for private theological debate. Just focus on God and ask the Holy Spirit for help and typically that should work I think

Fr Mike, I have sinned greatly, so much so to be excommunicated, but may I ask to come back home to the church? I'm so sick and tired of being without Him. I made a terrible mistake over 13 years ago because I was angry and said "God, if you're there please let us leave each other alone for a while". and I tossed a crucifix into the wind. I lost my way and spat in God's face, and I'm broken now. May I please recieve forgiveness for my stupidity and failure for blaspheming against The Lord? I failed in my weakness, and I am truly sorry!

It wasn't the act so much as it was having done it for the wrong reason, out of sheer pride. I knew it even then. I don't know if it was a sin but I felt regret whenever I thought about it.
