Sam Hui is from the 70s and 80s and therefore his music sounds old fashion, but in fact he's very popular with the older generation. He's often regarded as the founder of Cantopop, because before him Hong Kongers would only listen to English or Mandarin songs while Cantonese was more for the traditional opera. His most famous song in spoken slang is 半斤八兩, a 70s song about the working class. You can google and find videos with English translation. For the more modern take, you can go for Cantonese rap, from "Softhard" in the 90s, "Fama" in 2000s, to "Mirror" which is the hottest boy band nowadays and their songs would sometimes have few rap lines in between the music. Hope this helps and enjoy your music.

許冠傑’s songs are the representative of Cantonese songs. Some of his songs with purely Cantonese lyrics that not contain with some so-called written character liked “的”, “嗎”, “了”. e.g. 半斤八両, 賣身契, 最佳拍檔, etc. If you can fully understand these songs, your Cantonese skill can be reached an advanced level.

Also, if u read Chinese poet, Cantonese must be use to see the rhymes. Though we name it as “Cantonese”, there are many different ways of expression between Guangdong and Hong Kong. If you want to learn more Hong Kong way of expression , you may listen to “my little airport “ or watch “Viu TV” reality show !

Since Cantonese has 6 tones, it makes writing lyric harder with existing melody, in picking words and phases to match the tone. So if that is good lyrics you can just read it out and know the melody. And you can listen the Cantonese number song perfect match to the melody.

Did you know the late 80s and early 90s HK band Beyond? The (late) leader of the group Wong Ka Kui was heavily inspired by the famine and struggles by the Africans after visiting there, and wrote songs dedicated to them e.g. 'Amani' (some lyrics in Swahili) and 'Glorious Years' (光輝歲月) a tribute to Nelson Mandela (you can find the song's meaning in Eng online). Check it out..
