Hello friends! Todays objective is to create a better barrier to prevent trimmings from flying all over when I use my Giffen Grip. I know we've all been there, lets see if I can craft a solution!

Good ideas. I use a contact glue "Barge". Might be worth a try. Works on all materials.

I wish id watched your video to the end before writing my comments because what you did is what my rambling message was tring to explain, i will leave my ramble for you to have a laugh at. So glad we came up with the same solution. 😅❤ Watching your various ideas how about using the outside one but cutting little slits to hold an inner skirt that would direct the trimmings into your splash pan because the inner skirt would be just over the lip inside and the slits would allow your pegs to hold the inside skirt to the outside barrier. Does that make sense?? What I'm suggesting is joining the outside piece and a smaller inside strip together using the clips, to hold the inner piece just over the rim. So the clay couldn't rest on the rim because it would hit the wall and slide down over the inner skirt. I will try and draw it using / marks. /l\ this m shape first mark inside the splash pan, mark in middle is the splash pan and 3rd mark is the larger outside piece. Let me know if I lost you or more hopefully you get what I'm trying to say😊

Hi Lisa! Love that you share some of the non ceramic challenges in pottery! At my local studio they have duct taped together about 2 or 3 plastic folders for hat wrap around the outside of the wheel, and we secure them when needed with bungee cords. They fold up and can be put away and are easy to clean and are sturdy

So, I used to just put 3 paper grocery store bags in my splash pan and that worked fantastic for the 3+ years I’ve had my giffin grip. They work amazingly well, they just sit in the basin. Other people at my studio use newspaper. I’ve used the same 3 paper bags since day one and store them with my giffin grip. BUT, my husband just bought a shield made by giffin grip for me this Christmas. Works like a charm, fits all wheel heads, and made by giffin grip for a giffin grip. Wasn’t expensive….although more expensive than my 3 paper grocery store bags. ….which I’m still holding on to for backup

@ I know. 🤣🤣 I had no idea either. And I was only able to find ONE KZbin video on how to use it. The video is by giffin grip and I felt like I did watching the giffin grip tutorial video I watched many years ago when I first received my giffin grip (also an X-mas gift from my husband). The funny thing is my husband knows nothing about pottery and I love tools. I was completely dumbfounded when I opened the box. Still fun to make your own tools though and you bring me so much inspiration with my home studio. 💕

I actually stopped using my Giffen Grip for a while because of the mess! I ended up rigging up a similar solution to yours but I cut up one of those cheap plastic snow sled/carpets as my plastic. It's pretty stiff so it retains some curvature and it just sits inside the pan (with flaps cut in where the splash pan halves meet) and then I cut a lower piece for the "front" where your hands go. No tape, no velcro, no clamps etc. It does get some clay on it if I don't clean out the splash pan entirely from throwing, but that just helps it to stay in place. And, it rolls up easily for storage.

I have tried a clay box wrapped around the splash pan but had the same issue when cleaning up. Next I was thinking I would try a soft plastic bucket and place that around the wheel without the splash pan. Definitely not as easy to store as your solution so I may hold off. All I know is that I seem to be the messiest potter in the studio! Thanks Lisa for sharing your thoughts. 🥰

OK Lisa, I watched the whole thing and am thinking that sometimes we try to make things more difficult than they should be. With your skills with power tools why not ditch the plastic splash pan for trimming and build a plywood/masonite (or even cardboard) box split in half like the splash pan only wider to hold more trimmings and higher to keep them from flying. You could use woodworking clamps against clamping blocks or rubber bands to hold the two pieces together since you don't need to worry about it being watertight for trimming. When finished unclamp the two halves, pick up one half and dump trimmings into recycle bin, repeat with other half. Yes it would take up more space for storage but surely there is room in the dungeon half of your basement for that. Gosh, you could even just cut a cardboard box in half to slip around the wheel shaft. Easy Peasy.
@Lisa.Riland
@Lisa.Riland 6 күн бұрын
Ok well this is brilliant, lol. And yup, the dungeon half of my basement would support the space of it, but it is nice having something light and easily portable. But you know… I have a dream of building an entire wheel someday so maybe I can incorporate your idea into that 🧐 So many possibilities!!

Hey Lisa, my wife & I anticipate each new video you post and then schedule a time we can watch it together. She is the potter and I am her tool monkey and mechanic 😊 As I was watching your latest video I had an idea… instead of struggling with mechanical clips and Velcro... How about glueing magnets to the outside of your basin and then cut out your plastic shield and glue matching magnets (or steel punchouts) to the inside of the shield. If your basin walls are not quite 90 degrees, make some balsa or plastic angled shims and attach then to the outside of shield to go between the magnet attached to the basin to get the plastic shield to stand up perfectly vertical.
@Lisa.Riland
@Lisa.Riland 6 күн бұрын
This is absolutely brilliant! Oh my gosh I want to go test it right now, but don’t have strong enough magnets at the moment. I actually wonder if just the strength of the magnets alone would keep the shield right up against the side of the basin, then keeping it from being so close to the wheel head that the trimmings would gum up…. If nothing less I’m 100% going to switch from Velcro to magnets, I didn’t even think of that and it’s brilliant! Thank you so much. It also warms my heart that you and your wife enjoy my videos so much and watch them together. What a team it sounds like you two are. Thank you again for the GREAT suggestions and for watching. Have a wonderful weekend!

@@Lisa.Riland Yes, I am thinking that if you mounted a bunch of 60x10x3mm N42 bar magnets every 4" to 6" around the outside of the basin oriented straight up and then cut the heads and points off of some 8p nails and hot glued them to the inside your plastic shield (also straight up)... That should allow you to pickup the basin by grabbing the shield. And your shield would stay flush to the wall of the basin and its weight would be supported by the magnets and not resting on the bottom of the basin. Anyway... 2₵

I tried something like that& it did the job except there was alot of trimmings I always had to keep removing while trimming. I ended up just cutting a clothes hanging box for packing in half & putting my wheel kind of in it. I use this for my kitty litter box to . Yes it is a storage proplem but I decided just to keep it set up so water does go everywhere either. I like it. Yes you have to buy these clothes hanging boxes but they do last awhile. They are great for the kitty litter. I like your thoughts too . Always thinking .thanks for video as always!!! God bless take care!!

I use this same homemade system: a shelf liner, cut to fit the inside of my splash pan, held to the pan with 4” spring clamps. I punched two holes in the end of the plastic and hang it on two magnetic hooks the back of one of my shelves. I use a Shimpo Whisper and I’m wondering my splash pan leaves a bit more room to collect trimming scraps because I don’t have an issue of filling the pan if I trim a few pieces.
@Lisa.Riland
@Lisa.Riland 6 күн бұрын
Ahhh that’s brilliant, my splash pan must be narrower than the Shimpo for sure, there just wasn’t a lot of room and partially because the shelf liner was sorta at an angle as it sat in the pan. Thanks for watching!

Great to see your process and the challenges to make a "wall" for keeping flying-trims inside. Haven't tried it - but could a pool noodle or an insolation tube for pibes around the edge maybe function as a base for a plastic skirt? (and it doesn't has to be a high plastic skirt). Cut a slit and glue the skirt down into the pool noodle/insulation tube.
@Lisa.Riland

I’m think it could for other wheels but for mine I’m afraid there wouldn’t be any space left for the trimmings to go and would bog up after not too long. If you have more space though that would be a great solution!

I’ve also struggled with this issue. Trying to find a shield which will not obscure my mirror which I rely on when trimming. I found that simply slowing down my wheel helps tremendously! This was recommended by master potter Mary Fox in one of her tutorials.

Love your videos. I have the same problem when trimming on a foam bat. I bought a few placemats from the Dollar Store. I can just stand the mats overlapping around the inside of my spill pan. Not very glamorous, but it works for me. I’ve found I only need two or three mats that go behind the wheel head, as my trimmings don’t fly off at the front side of the wheel. Does that make sense? I really do enjoy your problem solving skills. I’ve been making plaster bats using your technique- wonderful. Thanks for sharing.
@Lisa.Riland
@Lisa.Riland 6 күн бұрын
You are so welcome! I probably did over engineer my solution, lol. It’s amazing the solutions the dollar store can offer! I think something about my splash pan just doesn’t offer a lot of room, and the way the two pieces of it connect creates a ‘bump’ that makes it hard for things to sit well on the inside. I’m curious, what kind of wheel do you have? Also, yay for plaster bats! I hope you find them as helpful as I do :)
@katherineleamaster3890
@katherineleamaster3890 6 күн бұрын
@ It’s the problem solving that makes your videos so appealing. We all share in the challenge. I have a Brent. My splash pan is a two-parter like yours. If the hump is a problem, perhaps you could notch the placemats where needed. The plastic placemats are just stiff enough that, overlapped horizontally, they stay upright and press against the inside curve of the splash pan. Love the plaster bats- now if I could just find an affordable source for potters plaster. Sadly, our local pottery supply store closed recently.
