India wants to go green - with 50% of its energy generated by non-fossil fuels by 2030. It’s plan? Install millions of solar panels in just eight years. Is an energy transition at this scale possible?
This ambitious project will mean increasing its solar capacity by about five-fold, from the current levels of 60GW to almost 300 GW in 2030. To achieve this, the country will need over a million acres of land and hundreds of billions in investments.
Yet land acquisition issues could scupper the efforts, as farmers are reluctant to sell ancestral lands for solar projects. At the same time, supply chain problems cast a shadow over India’s solar plans, as China currently dominates the manufacture of silicon wafers, a critical component in photo-voltaic cells.
Can the sub-continent succeed in its push to harness the sun?

Its a shame how conveniently news and other agency forget the Per Capita Greenhouse Gases Emissions. They will point out that India is 3rd largest producer of green house gasses but somehow they forget to mention India ranks 10th on per capita emissions which actually tells the real picture i.e an Indian by default is more concerned about the environment then the rest of the world. India is doing excellent in Environmental aspects and i am very much optimistic about the future. Edit : India ranks 100 something in Per Capita Energy Consumption. And this thing proves my point even more. They just conveniently forget that an average INDIAN consumes 12 times LESS ENERGY than An average AMERICAN.

No one disputes the fact that India has very low per capita emissions and I think that's pretty widely accepted and known. I'm honestly surprised to know India is only tenth, that's probably counting the EU as one but still I would've thought there are more places with higher per capita emissions. But overall I feel like this video cast India in a good light and was highlighting all the progress its making. Clearly developed countries should be doing more to help with loss and damage due to climate change they mostly caused, as well as providing climate finance to transition to clean energy

I appreciates the thoughts in this thread . 1) Yes , I am surprised India is 10th in rank. In my opinion it should be way behind in 50th rank or something like that vis a vis ‘Ggh/per person’. 2) India has power generation capacity of 400GW of which 160GW is renewable based 3) Developed World, if serious about saving the World environment must - a) Pay compensation to loss caused all over the word due to climate change b) They should incentivise developing world to switch to clean tech C) must do research to develop cheap storage batteries tech and allow this tech to spread all over world without IPR restrictions D) do research to develop nuclear fusion energy D) help develop a World Wide Web of power grid .

Kudos to India. Gives me a hope for the future. I completely agree with the point where the effort should not come from government alone. It requires neither giving up our lifestyle nor generating enough energy to fuel said lifestyle; what we need is efficiency. Efficiency can reduce most people's demands by 80-90% while still giving the same services/comfort. Only then should we be thinking about renewables, which will be very easy to transition the remaining 10-20%.

Further each mo and mla be charged with s minimum 50percent solar rooftop adoption before permission for contesting the next elections, to set the ball rolling snd gather momentum. Do u know the meaning of HDI, Purchasing parity per head, Expenditure capability on average, Income parity?? U spend more only when u earn more.. Then comes currency. As the value of currency drops, ur chances of affording things also decreases as the products international value won't decrease. 1 USD=80 INR. U need 900 USD to buy an iPhone 13 pro.... Had 1 USD been equal to 40 INR Ur country's power grid might be huge, but to power something that exceeds the basic requirements need a lot hell more power usage... Ur population mass on an average lies between middle to lower middle class.... Means the huge mass can't earn more, spend more plus devaluing of currency ads to the burden. India had only planned 100GW Solar. Now it is targeting 300-500GW solar as Indian companies have acquired the technology to make Polysilicon, Ingots, wafers and panels themselves. Reliance industries have acquired REC Solar one of the best in the industry last year which is vertically integrated company. This in addition to Adani who is making their own panels starting next year means no dependency on China for anything solar.

you are correct, but EVERYONE needs to get off fossil fuels We are in the situation we are in, placing blame does no good because it is a waste of mental and emotional energy and is simply a distraction away from solving the problem. That said, 'the west' needs to cough up money to help poorer countries transition and they/we need to go faster and get rid of greenwashing Going green will NOT 'sacrifice india's development' yes, there possibly maybe a temporary pause, but india will be better off for it There'll be better health outcomes without the air pollution and risks to health from coal mining just to start with. access to abundant energy = more time to pursue education and financial endeavours, to improve communities etc but it has to be done in a way that is moral and ethical to communities, such as the example in vid whereby farmer rants out land n gains an income for 25-ish years, or the doctor example in this vid I think india's and other fossil fuel companies have a duty of care to fund their worker's education into being able to transfer into other sectors with current windfall profits

A friend in Trivandrum was able to afford a house, producing energy on his roof, gas in the garden. Costs of land is expensive. Energy autonomy for each individual is not always in the interest of leading class. There are examples in Europe. There is a small number of regions in Europe where house owners reach energy autonomy.

While US being the sole superpower in the world, decides to spend $200 Billion worth arms and war gear in Rus-Ukr conflict along with NATO, it clearly defines the western intention and policy focus. And, all the so called developed ones has created a fund pool of $100 Billion, for helping developing and under developed ones to go green. Meanwhile India recognise the big environmental issues of collective humankind and mobilise all its resources to find ways to transition from fossil fuels to green tech. While, the west launch a mega campaign of pressuring eastern nations to condemn Russia, fir what? Just for values and democracy, I don't think so. Could you raise the solar panels a bit more off the ground? If so, you should be able to grow shade tolerant crops in order to feed and circularly graze goats, chickens, and other livestock under the panels! If the health and the organic content of the SOIL underneath the solar farms could be enhanced by the solar farms, this could be a game-changing model for India. That way at the end of the Solar Panel lifespan, the farmer would have healthy and vibrant land at the end of lease cycle.
@MrPoornakumar
@MrPoornakumar Жыл бұрын
Ghironsingh Oh, you mean our crops & grass vying with Solar panels for "Sunlight". I am surprised why can't others didn't think of it! In fact solar energy is what makes our food to eat. If this competes with electricity generation, I can only say it is a foolish thought. India has 300 million hectares of land area. At he rate of Solar insolation 1361 Watt-seconds (Watt-second = Joule; but to elucidate the detail, I used it) per square meter, the total amount of Solar energy (if all of the 300 million hectares = 3 trillion square meters) is "4.0 quadrillion" (or 4,000,000,000,000,000) Watt-seconds. In fact, this would be possible if every place in India is on Equator (latitude, λ= 0º). But this needs to be modified to "4 Cosλ" quadrillion(=10 power 15) Watt-seconds where λ is the latitude of that place. Since India is spread over from λ = 8º4' to 36º25', we need to go through a mathematical "Integration" process. I am inclined to think that about 0.9 (=90%) is available to India (much less in "Siachen"). That means 3.6 quadrillion Watt-seconds at noon, zero during night & no rains. We aren't going to cover the whole of India (3,000,000,000,000 square meters area) with inter-connected Solar paneling. Our farmers (we feel they are idiots, they don't know that there are SHADE-TOLERANT crops) want their crops to get all sunlight with no shade of Solar panels. May be, we can cover a tenth (10%) that amounts to 300,000 square kilometers area, of Solar paneling. How much of this area (solar panels) do we manufacture & how much we import (from China & nowhere else as that is costlier) & at what expense (of importing it) in US$ (or equivalent foreign currency)? What game-changer you are talking? There ain't any such game-changers. It isn't a game; a serious matter. I suggest you read, Late Minoo Masani's "our India". He suggests that we are actually eating the Sun as our food !
@ghironsingh
@ghironsingh Жыл бұрын
@@MrPoornakumar I agree. We are. But without any organic content going back into the soil how do you expect it to remain healthy after 20 years? I am concerned about the productivity of the soil after the lease cycle because you are right. We are “consuming” the sunlight. And if that space is poor at converting the sunlight into food after the lease cycle then the farmer and the people of India have lost out. Solar is not the end solution to our energy needs, but it can be a stopgap measure to use while the nuclear technology improves. I would love to see a modern India powered by artificial suns in power generation stations. But in the meantime, I think that if solar could be a bridge that helps the soil as well, it would really help India move in the right direction.

Excellent documentary. Very commendable the efforts being made to decarbonise even as low income country needs to develop rapidly it's manufacturing sector that is energy intensive. One aspect that requires attention is the end of life recycling of the solar panels. Looks like it is posing serious problems where the recovery cost of reusable materials in the panels grossly exceeds their value. Second, solar water heating is a quick, easier application that needs to be promoted in large housing complexes and hotels to reduce power usage.

I think WEF ( World Economic Forum ) needs to highlight such videos too , showing the challenging situation and yet overcoming it and make it happen . Am not saying by simply implementing this act of renewal energy we have done the job … nope not at all and now the actual work will start and challenges moving forward are also identified too . All am saying is why only western worlds are demonstrators of all the righteousness examples of certain testimonials on such and platforms . It starts with World and on the worlds map , countries from APAC regions were again chosen strategically few nations so far were taken while we as India as a country was never there at all or always shown as poor country , lots of challenges etc and barely saw any of it , that made me observe one thing was they only wanted top or top countries model who were a part of developed sorted out economies . But today also would love here to highlight that don’t forget India and Indians across are also contributing in those developed economies share of success . Not only that and leads it with nations wide a strong example in its revision too . , however we have hearts those more welcoming and offer the world a better place indeed . No matter we many have less and our less has now proving the world to be more of everything including the cultural behaviors ans transformation to adapt responding in a world class manner unlike developed nations . Thanks once again and we can make a world of difference not only to ourselves and others around us would be the part of measuring someone’s success , as really want this to be an eye opener to the rest of the word . Define the term Success to each individual at their level . Think about it ……. Living with the remark . Inclusiveness is what is needed 🙏 .
