I would say it would take a long time, a lot of popular library that are implemented for ML & DL only have worker code in python the rest is in CPP if we talk about the performance the main computation for the most part is done through those. While its ecosystem has foot deep in the whole Deployment and Ops, the only disadvantage is what you mentioned and the fact you need to use python for a lot of deployment stuff for better integration, which can be disadvantages due to language limitations. People who develop 'Models' are mostly people with PHD and Masters in mathematical fields where language like Python & R becomes easy for them to use, instead of Java where features like strict type checking and such becomes an obstruction. Though, I can definitely see Java becoming a good contender in Deployment but not in actual core process of AIML.

with pytorch you can already compile the model to torchscript and then run the model with java. i think most if not all HF models are built on top of pytorch so such approach might work

at this point way forward should be: 1. java apis around jni would be better to provide crude wrapper for what all can be done. even if it is slow it allows us to work without learning a new language and eco sys. 2. then you know where your apis are expanding and where optimization will pay. then subject to usage, ... only required apis may be implemented in java in next itertion.

Completely agree with the point you put forward..... Java is still lagging in terms of ecosystem as well the libraries that python has..... But still want Java to be used in AI.... I don't know who else agrees but I didn't find python code as readable as java.... As a java guy switching to python for learning AI makes it difficult to get used to unreadable python codes ...

The thing is there aren’t much resources available for Java in the field of AI. I think in 2019 AWS released a library called Deep Java Library. But when I searched online there weren’t much tutorials or well structured courses available and python being easy to code and with more than abundant resources most people(even people who want to learn AI in java) by default choose Python. I believe Java could do wonders in the field of AI. But it’s like a snowballing effect unless some veterans in Java or companies using java help boost the usage of Java in the field Java may never overtake python. So the first step would be to have more resources where interested parties can learn AI in java and not some small course but a well structured one. And also if some company say created a system that uses java over python and show the others the benefits of using java they might just switch to java. An example would be how most companies started to prefer Spring Framework(Spring Cloud Eureka) when Netflix used it and showed the performance.

Yes, I strongly support it. Because I love java because it has got some concepts (OOPS), readable, secure and as u said its typed. I tried very hard to get some idea on Phython also, which I could not because I was not getting the satisfaction that I used to in Java. With only indentation we have to manage Phython, had a feeling statements are incomplete and I can't digest the fact that no need to declare variable type, where as in Java we give utmost importance for variables and its type conversions. Strong feeling that after so much of development in Phython people find it's difficult to maintain the code. Will try to find the alternative.

Python is amazing because there are so many libraries and frameworks available, and it allows you to do things quickly and easily, but for large projects, if good practices are not applied Python is complex, for example encapsulation is relative, with an underscore you indicate that a variable is private, but it still isn't, and with a dobule underscore it is more protected through name mangling, but it is still accessible, the ideal is to create getters and setters like in Java, or use @property but in reality few use it, if through an object you instantiate a variable that doesn't exist it creates it if __slots__ are not used, that's why Java es robust and its verbosity allows you to maintain explicit control, I think that for now it is better to use APIs to relate AI applications created in Python, but I think that at some point Java could do without Python.

As far as my knowledge libraries that we use in python for AI are written in C and fortan. so, that makes them pretty much faster and I don't know how much speed difference is there as compared to java given those libraries like numpy, pandas are compiled and have been written in C.

Today I have seen article where Elon Musk says that by 2029 AI will do all the task which humans can do. Also in coming 4-5 years AI will be 1000x better. Seeing the rapid development in AI, it seems it quite evident that in few years company with start using AI rigorously. Since Java is being used to develop most of the enterprise application I would love to see tutorials where we integrate AI using Java. Maybe one days Java will have the biggest community support for AI. Anyway Python is also good but I would prefer you should do a series in integrating AI in Java

Not only does the ecosystem play a crucial role in the AI race also the complexity has a vital role too. Python become a widely used language for AI for many features which can also be present in any other language like JS but the stand-out factor is simplicity. As an AI enthusiactic I know tensorflow, Keras,skitlearn, and other libraries that are used to build ML models they are difficult to understand at first even for experienced programmers so if all this stuff is built in Jave it becomes 10x difficult to write and read code.

Yes, in the future, when AI is stable, then there is definitely another languages with use in place of python ( due to property of python). I think java lacks only a lack of library, which can build in the future.Already lots of jar adding everyday so library can be added externally or internally. If java would have not taken by Oracle, then the process of changes in language would have been faster. Oracle need to provide good community.
