I know Sam gets some flack and I have given it to him from time to time. But this is an absolutely well spoken, objective and balanced view of something a lot of media are making salacious. Particularly his comments about beverage being a contrarian. I haven’t heard someone use that term about him before that’s exactly what it is. I think one thing about beverage that gets missed is that a massive part of this list being what it is, it’s because he put so much time into fringe players and found their position. Dale was barley in the best 22 and he found him in defence after a lot of trial and error and then he makes all Australian. Naughton was a 4th best and fairest in the back line and the dogs didn’t have good defenders yet they moved him and now he is spoken about as one of the best forwards in the comp/ future best. Mara couldn’t get a game early and he got so much media flack for it when they weren’t winning. But you look at him now and it’s clear that was the right call for his confidence etc. Richards was played so much early when he wasn’t playing well and moved around a lot. Buku who has been absolutely vital for them down back even tho playing as a forward last year. The list goes on. Lots of coaches wouldn’t have made these moves and we would be having a different conversation about the state of the list I think. I think he makes a lot of strange calls and someone I totally disagree with but in the same breath I would have disagreed with almost every one of the others I listed so he found things lots of others couldn’t. Not saying I think this means he shouldn’t feel under pressure but couldn’t agree more with he deserves to be judged on the totality of this season. Anyway really valued Sams take here

It actually took me a couple of minutes to realise who he was, I'm used to seeing him clean shaven and speaking like an absolute flog.

Buku was drafted as a defender. Him being thrown around pretty much ruined his defending development as now teams are exposing him and playing through his man. There was no need for him to play forward (in the twos mind you) after drafting JUH let alone Darcy and recruiting Lobb. Last 2-3 weeks in particular, watch him in games and he's pretty much ball watching as his opponent runs off him (which he ends up being in no man's land by the time the ball reaches his man). The players you've listed aren't fringe. Fringe players are the likes of McComb, Hannan, McNeil, Scott, Vandermer, with many more over the years of Bevo's time. They wouldn't get a run on other lists but are/were Bevo's favourites, and got games over the likes of West, Lipinski, Weightman (took injury for him to debut) to name a few. The only time Bevo hasn't selected his favourites is when they've been delisted or injured. I think Bevo's ego has got the better of him since he's always thrown players out of position from day dot i.e. M Boyd, Picken. But thrown players out of position went from being out of necessity to how can we ruin the development of this young player after they've had a stellar year in this position. I'm surprised he hasn't thrown Naughton's magnet to the backline yet. (I think that has a lot to do with media personalities suggesting it and Bevo doesn't like to be wrong).

@@MichaelCameron17 how? Your argument was/is that Bevo is good at finding fringe player's spot. Then you go on to list players who'd be in the best 22 for other lists, and not the fringes of the best 22 either. Dale was the teams in form forward before being thrown to the half back, which i cant remember whether first or second year there that he got AA. That's not a fringe player who can pretty much kick more goals in a team in half a season and then be recognised as AA standard for half back the following year(s). Naughton never missed a beat after debuting, taking pack marks in his first year. JUH was a tall #1 draft pick developing his game and fitness (he still doesn't look like he can run games out). The only fringe players Bevo had luck with was Hamling, Biggs, (both premiership players who actually played a big part in their 2016 finals) and maybe you could argue Roarke Smith for his 2021 effort. His other projects have nothing to show for. No solid players from his "fringe players" projects. He'd have more luck if he could come up with a game plan for his players instead of having a stale one.

As a Dogs fan, this list analysis is absolutely spot on. The list is more than good enough, it's the coach that isn't. In my opinion he's the sole reason why we're inconsistent. The coach needed to go 6 years ago, back in 2018

Gone in 2018 😂 mate he got us to a grand final in 2021?

@paddymcevoy123 So? 2018 was a horrible season, and from that point on, the inconsistencies started. Dogs fans who are happy clappers don't look into the context of each season. In 2019, we were 15th after round 14, go and look yourself if you don't believe and make a late run to Finals because the coach started to actually pick his best team and not piss about, only to get flogged in the EF. 2020, the same thing, we spent most of the season inconsistent and around 10th on the ladder, another late run to make finals because the coach decided to get serious by picking the best team and playing players in their actual position again. 2022 spent only 4 weeks in the 8, and again, we made a late run, only this time to rely on Kozzy Picket kicking a goal with 10 seconds left to beat Carlton and then the following week Collingwood to come back from 6 goals down to beat Carlton just to make finals. Carlton only needed 1 win, and they bottled it. In the EF, we were 41 points up and yet another capitulation due to the coach having no clue how to stop momentum or a run of goals and not having a Plan B. Last year was a shit show. Again, we needed to rely on teams losing to make it. This time, we had no luck. This coach has never had a Plan B. For the last 6-7 years (excluding 2021), we haven't had a game plan and system that has stacked up. It's completely outdated, and he's never evolved or wanted to because he's stuck in his ways. Extremely stubborn. Beverage is tactically and strategically inept, and his in-game management is non-existent. It's why he gets outcoached each week and why we can't win close games because opposition coaches react and are proactive. Meanwhile, our coach just sits there in the box doing nothing. He can't stop momentum, and when the opposition gets a run on, he's clueless on how to stop it. He picks his favourites over the best team available each week. We lose to the bottom 4 teams at least 2-3 times each season. I'm sick of the excuses our "happy clapper" mediocrity accepting fans give because this fraud has completely wasted 6 out of the last 7 years clowning around. Any other coach would love to have this list.
