I am working as a psychotherapist for about 40 years and I totally agree with your conclusions! Creating connects us with the right side of the brain, where we are present with our senses, not our thinking and often worried mind, which in my opinion and personal experience helps a lot with regulating our emotions and thus our nervous system. Thank you sincerely for sharing your personal story! And these pages look beautiful😍

@willawanders dear Wendy, a very valuable book on this topic is: Whole brain living by Jill Bolte Taylor, a neuroscientist who suffered from a stroke in her thirties when the left part of her brain stopped functioning for several years. With medical treatment and the help from her mother she regained these functions and wrote her first book: My stroke of insight, very impressive!

This really mirrors my life. I went to pharmacy school because it was a defined “job” that was something people made good money doing. And my immigrant Dad was 💯 for it. I dropped out and switched to plain biology, even though I really wanted to do something creative. Art saved me in my late 20s/early 30s. Even when I went to seminary, art was there (although in limited time and space). Now I use art as my spiritual practice.

I totally connect with what you are saying about art being my spiritual practice! I think most artists will agree with that!

I have suffered from anxiety since I was a very small child. It has impacted my life in innumerable ways. My physical symptoms were different, so I can’t relate to the IBS (it must’ve been awful), but waking up already in flight or fight, absolutely! There have been so many times in my past that I lived in constant terror of something bad happening or of making a critical mistake. For me the anxiety was cyclical and would come and go, but was sometimes very dire. I used to call it going down the vortex. I was able to retire a few months ago and have put many stressors behind me. I have finally given some real thought to the things that make me happy. I am brand new to creating art, and I’m not sure I’m any good, but that’s not really the point. I have always loved looking at other people‘s work and took many art history classes in college. It’s time for me to give it a whirl. Your work is beautiful, and I am glad that you figured out early that you needed to allow yourself to create. That is a tremendous gift. Thank you for this video. I’m sure it will help many.

Dear Willa, everything you said in your video resonated with me! Especially where IBS is concerned. Like you I was also diagnosed with IBS many years ago (early 2000s? Perhaps 1990s), very little was known about it then but I had a wonderful GP who knew what caused it. Very knowledgeable and wise. He also connected it to certain childhood traumas. I have always been creative and it was creativity that helped me over the years. Ironically (maybe not so ironic I guess) it was during the pandemic when I realised that art and creativity was instrumental in easing my anxiety and stress during a very difficult period. I am most grateful for this ability to create ❤ (I have also slow stitched, knitted/crocheted, created handmade books etc...) it is the process that matters, the act of doing...because it gets us out of our heads.

Thanks a lot Wendy for sharing! I definitely feel art helps me being less stressed, anxious. But only when I am able to focus. Unfortunately, most of the time I feel paralyzed, unable to choose which project to start or what materials to choose. So many options and inspiration and very little time to create. (maybe some ADHD here 🤚)
@willawandersКүн бұрын
It helps me to put blinders on and not get involved in too much stuff. I basically can handle the project in Fodder School each month plus watercoloring in my journal when time permits. Knowing that these are the things that I have committed to actually helps me to stay focused and get a lot of stuff done, even with ADHD.

My greatest love in the fiber world is authentic rug hooking But I want to also learn to paint. Anyway, watching you & others paint has opened a whole new world to me. For me, art brings me into the present moment and keeps me sane. My mother and grandmother talked me into teaching. In my 4th year of college, i did my internship in a high school and I HATED IT. I did teach off and on for 15 years and was actually a good teacher, but it didn't make me come alive. Now I'm retired and making art...so our destiny finds a way.

23:40 Hi Wendy, This video was extremely well timed for me and I appreciate your candor immensely. I am dealing with constant anxiety, which is partly fueled by the guilt I feel while using art as therapy and relaxation. Having grown up with parents who could never see the value in creative pursuits unless they were going to involve monetary recompense, I continue to struggle with allowing myself to paint or do other types of art even though it’s the only thing I still enjoy doing. Coincidentally I’m convinced that trying to be something I never could be was a contributing factor in developing Crohn’s disease which started out as IBS in my youth. Perhaps you could follow this up with your thoughts about finding a personal philosophy to counter the negative connotations that linger from childhood and beyond, due to societal and or family pressure to follow a more “practical” route in life? Thank you for helping us to give ourselves permission to be what we are! Sounds like your online courses might be just the thing ❤ Suni
