Two things: 1. John Ankerberg mentioned a shocking sounding Pope Leo XIII quotation, and a few of you asked my thoughts on it. It's perfectly sound (and I think even relatively unobjectionable) if you read the actual paragraph, instead of the one out-of-context line he quotes. He's saying Mary is responsible for our salvation *because of her role in the Incarnation.* Here's the full thing: > Put less poetically, without Mary, we wouldn't have had Jesus of Nazareth come into the world in the way that he did. Does anyone actually disagree with that? 2. Emily (in the comments) asked me to say something encouraging Catholics to be charitable. So please, even when you're responding to trolls and objectors, etc., err on the sides of charity and grace, acting "with gentleness and reverence; and keep[ing] your conscience clear, so that, when you are abused, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame." That aside, I love your comments and the beautiful testimonials so many of you are sharing!

Protestantism is a very dangerous place to be, due to its misleading nature; its tendency to grab partial truths and run with them, avoiding the Word of God in its totality. So, when someone who knows the scriptures all too well comes around and naturally debunks the partially derived protestant doctrine, as always, then that protestant suddenly looks like a fool or an ignoramus.

"Put less poetically, without Mary, we wouldn't have had Jesus of Nazareth come into the world in the way that he did. Does anyone actually disagree with that?" Is that really all that Leo XIII meant? If that's really all that he meant, why would he feel the need to state something so obvious? I heard a Catholic priest state on a radio program that since Mary is still the mother of Jesus, he is obedient to her just as any good son would be, and he only grants salvation to those whom she tells him to. Is this a standard or common belief within the Roman Catholic Church?
@patrickdtx36382 ай бұрын
@@sarco64 I'm not Catholic (yet) but I can tell you that that is not what the church teaches about Mary and salvation. I think it's easy to have an emotional reaction when we hear these things and that sometimes it impacts our memory of what was said. Alternately, it does seem that there are people who overstate things and a priest's comments on a radio show don't have any authority for defining doctrine. He should be able to speak accurately about what the church believes, but if he misspeaks for whatever reason, the faithful are not bound by anything he has stated. I think you raise a valid point about the quotation, by the way.

Joe, My wife and I started OCIA this past Monday. We were both nominally Protestant as children, but the anti-Catholic rhetoric has always been present. Through other channels such as reason and theology, Catholic answers, and the counsel of Trent, almost every objection either of us has ever had about Catholicism has been answered. Still, I confess that the nature of Mary and the saints more broadly has remained a stumbling block. My Protestant brain has been locked into the mindset of “Even if they can pray for us… so what? Christ is the one that saves.” The saints have always seemed like a pleasant but rather insignificant option, and I’ve more or less shied away from giving them any real reverence. This video has conquered that last mistake. The puzzle fits together now; I have nothing left to argue. Your channel might not have been what put me on the road to the faith, but it just cemented me in it forever. From a random unbaptized (for now!) catechumen on the internet, thank you.

Then, be as patient with Him as He has been with you. When you receive the grace to know that HE IS THERE, you will be forever changed. Miracles occur in Christ’s presence - of that I can personally attest.

I shook it off as hallucinations at the time but the weird thing was that soon after I saw the figure I was diagnosed with testicular cancer. So I got surgery to remove the cancer and everything appeared to be fine for like 6 months... that's when I saw the skeletal figure at the foot of my bed again. Soon after I saw the figure again, I got a CT scan and it showed that my cancer spread to a lymph node and I was told I would need to undergo Chemotherapy. Because of this and being confronted in my own mortality my faith got reignited and I returned to a local Catholic Church and underwent confession and went to Mass. The night after I went to Mass I had a dream that i still remember clearly like it was yesterday. In that dream, I saw a woman dressed in beautiful gold and silver garments holding a chain connected to that skeletal figure... the woman simply gestured to the skeletal figure and told me "This is a Demon." Then my dream ended and I woke up. I haven't seen that skeletal figure since. Because of this event, I believe that Mary decided to help me with the demon.

This reminds me of the joke (maybe a parable). There was a great flood and a man was standing on the roof of his home surrounded by water up to the first floor windows. The sheriff came in a boat to rescue him and he said, "No thanks, Jesus will save me." A little while later, with water up to the roof, another boat came and he said, "No thanks, Jesus will save me." Soon water is lapping at his feet on the highest peak of the roof and a helicopter shows up offering to take him to safety and he says again, "No thanks, Jesus will save me." The guy drowns and stands at the gates of heaven. He asks Jesus, "Why didn't you save me?" Jesus responds, "But I sent you two boats AND a helicopter."

I like to think of a soldier who's wounded and under fire. The medic is called over by his buddy. The medic drag is the soldier out of the line of fire to an aid station. The doctor heals his wounds. In this case of physical salvation, we actually have three humans working to save the man. The Buddy, the medic and the doctor. You also have God saving the man by creating his body wonderfully that it might be able to heal when injured. God chooses to work through the body of Christ. This is why He established a Church and didn't write a manual. It is the will of God that we work together as a community or rather a communion of Faith.

This explanation is very helpful. But there are still so many questions that linger. 1. Why is singing to Mary acceptable (just search for Marian Hymns)? I can say that my pastor saved me through his preaching, but I would never think about including a hymn to him as part of the worship service in the church. 2. Why the focus on Mary? Scripture actually places much more emphasis on Jesus being the Son of David than Mary. So why don't we venerate David to the same degree? 3. It's one thing to honor people in this life who took part in our conversion and walk of holiness. But praying to them now that they are dead? There are hundreds of prayers in the bible, but not one is directed to anyone but God. 4. Where is this devotion and veneration of Mary with the Apostles in Scripture, or the Apostolic Fathers in the first few centuries? Historically speaking, we can trace when this devotion to Mary enters the church, and it's not part of the Apostolic deposit.

Our Lord says (excerpts from Maria Valtorta's Notebooks 1943, pp. 19-20, Notebooks 1945-1950, p. 429): "The first time, My Father, to purify the earth, sent a cleansing by water (Gen. chaps 6-9). The second time, He sent a cleansing by blood (Heb 9:11-14) and by what Blood! Neither the first cleansing nor the second has availed to turn the human beings into children of God. Now the Father is weary, and to make the human race perish, He lets the chastisements of Hell go wild, because human beings have preferred Hell to Heaven, and their Ruler, Lucifer, torments them to make them blaspheme Us so as to make them completely his children. Oh! If people still could still turn to Me who am salvation! I desire only that and I weep because I see that nothing can make them raise their heads towards Heaven from where I stretch My arms towards them. Hasten the hour of the Triumph of the Woman (Rev 12:1), foundress of the lineage of those marked with the sign of God's servants, the chosen whose dwelling is Heaven! Hasten the hour of Mary's triumph over Satan (Gen 3:15), the world, matter, and death. Let the men, women, and children of the One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic, and Roman Church join the angels, headed by Michael Archangel so that the dragon with seven heads, ten horns, and seven accursed diadems (Rev 12:3) -- the seven seductions (Rev 17:3-6) -- will be cast down for a certain period (Rev 20:1-6). There cannot be a second Redemption carried out by Me, Christ. But there can still be One to save a greater number of spirits from the coils of Hell: that of Glorious Mary. In devotion to Her lies the Secret of the Last Redemption."

Thank you for this and all your other videos. I'm a somewhat recent convert from non denominational protestantism and while I understand and accept the Marian dogmas, I sometimes still struggle with some of the language and hymns and such about Mary. But yours and Trent's and other such videos help a lot. It is truly mind-blowing to contemplate the fact that Mary gave Christ his humanity and her body grew his body. She really is like a portal that God used to enter into our world. And then she nursed him, kissed his boo boos, held his little hands as he learned to walk... And then had to watch him suffer and die. It makes me cry to think of it. She really was his mother! She was closer to him than any other person on earth. She knew him better than anyone else. She had a totally unique role in salvation history. AND she is still alive! Even more alive than we are, in God's presence! It is all just so beautiful. It is only since I encountered Catholic teaching on all of this, that I really thought about it more deeply and it has made the Incarnation more real, concrete, amazing, and beautiful!

I have become all things to all people, THAT BY ALL MEANS I MIGHT SAVE SOME.”[emphasis added] As a former devout Protestant and strict adherent to “sola Scriptura” I find it incredibly ironic that the vast majority of disagreements that Protestants have with Catholic doctrine arises from Catholics taking Scripture at face value rather than shoe-horning a set of doctrinal positions into Scripture that appear to contradict those positions. In theological terminology: I’m shocked at how much eisegesis I did as a Protestant without even thinking about it, rather than accepting the simple exegesis that, more often than not, is extremely plain to the naked eye.

I agree with that. Yes we believe other people co-operate in Christ’s work of salvation. In a very specific sense, I can be a saviour to someone else. I'm so glad you made this video!!!! I was going to call in to Catholic Answers Live yesterday to ask you about something similar, and then they changed the programming on me!!! My MiL jokingly refers to herself as a "consummate church shopper of the Baptist persuasion". She had some concerns when I started dating my husband, and now has even more now that he's going through OCIA. I told her that I'm always open to answering any questions or concerns she has to the best of my ability, but that might include occasionally sending her to someone more knowledgeable than me. At our most recent get-together, she asked me about Mary as co-redemptrix (I did inform her that that title is not found in any Church documents, and a lot of Catholics don't use it as it can be confusing) and as mediatrix. She seemed especially concerned about how this "makes it seem like Christ has to share power in the heavenly Kingdom." I did retreat from the conversation and ask for time to consider my answer -- which, she told me, makes it seem like I don't *know* the answer, which is a problem (though I'm not sure how that's a problem). My initial thought was to go through the history of the Davidic Kingdom having a Queen Mother, not a queen consort, but I'm not sure I'm confident enough to deal with or avoid the "Bible blitzkrieg" with that route. Instead, would using Luke's depiction of the Last Supper and John's description of heaven in Revelations be better to show that Christ already shares power, and intended to do so even before the crucifixion? In particular, I'm thinking of the passage of Luke that you shared in the past couple weeks as a defense of the papacy, and the part of Revelations where John mentions the 24 elders ruling the nations. Thanks for all your help, @shamelessjoe . God bless.

It only means she participates by bringing her concerns before the Lord _even though he already knows them._ Recall at Cana that although he was aware the guests were out of wine, it was obviously no concern to him but when Mary brought the concern to him, she literally “mediated” his first miracle even though his time to reveal his first miracle had not yet come. This shows the power of Mary’s intercession. Mark Miravalle has written a book about this. You might want to check it out.

Audrey, I think your approach is a good one. You can also show her how Lumen Gentium clarifies that Mary's role is strictly creaturely and subordinate. Then, show that Luke 22 proves that Jesus DOES use such creaturely, subordinate roles in his work. If we miss this, we run the risk of just becoming "consumers" instead of "producers," of just receiving from Christ without realizing our call to share him (and salvation) with others.

Protestants who regard Mary as second fiddle to iconic biblical saints must reconsider. Why? Because... * Protestants Were Saved By The Blood Of The Blood Of Mary! * Protestants elevate the Blood of Jesus to the highest, invoking It for evangelization, spiritual warfare & signs and wonders. But why are they *blind* to the fact that the All-powerful Blood of Jesus has a *LITERAL* Mary component to it. That, whenever they invoke the Blood of Jesus, Mary is *PHYSICALLY* meshed with It beyond ignoring. The Blood of Jesus * IS * * The Blood Of The Blood Of Mary ! * This because Mary is the *New Eve* as the Church Fathers affirm. In the same way that Adam called Eve "bone of my bones & flesh of my flesh" (Gen. 2:23), *Only* the New Eve (Mary) can say to the New Adam (Jesus), "You, Jesus, are bone of my bone, flesh of my flesh" ... and *Blood Of My Blood*. It happened when Mary said *YES* to Angel Gabriel, making her a major cause of man's redemption. Mary *LITERALLY* & *PHYSICALLY* provided the *raw material* to create Jesus' Blood that saved humanity. Had Mary said *NO*, Jesus would **NOT** , again, **NOT** even have the body and blood to pour out to redeem men from hell. * You Were "SAVED" By Mary's "YES"! * A little *gratitude* please protestants. Christians are not unthankful people (2 Tim 3:1-2). Mary is the *most extraordinary* bible character *excepting* Jesus & God. The Blood of the Blood of Mary *redeemed* Enoch, Elijah, Moses, Abraham, David, Daniel, Isaiah, John the Baptist, Mary Magdalene, Peter, Paul, the Apostles, the bible characters & truly, *All* of mankind! *NOT* the other way around. With Mary's freely willed * "YES" * she did it! This is how Mary became *The Mother of the Whole Church*. The Blood of Mary's Blood redeemed each & every member of Christ's Church by virtue of her *"YES"* to God. Now we see that the *woman clothed with the sun* in Revelation 12 is *both* Mary *and* , effectively, the Church (Mary having birthed each & every member of Jesus' Church by the Blood of Her Blood).

Hello. I'm Catholic but I've been having a lot of doubts due to me reading and listening to Reformed Theology content. To be honest I've always had a problem with the quote that Mary allegedly said "One day through the Rosary and Scapular I will save the world."

Hi. Interesting. I was actually raised Reformed but am moving heavily in the Catholic direction. I have been working through a lot of Catholic doctrine and intercession through Mary has been one of the hardest things for me to get behind. However, I just prayed my first rosary yesterday and we shall see how it goes. I’d encourage you to remain Catholic as though I am not yet Catholic, I have faith that it is Christ’s Church. It’s only that sometimes we struggle to see how everything works. But from what I’ve seen, Catholics have a fantastic rebuttal to every Reformed critique. Keep looking!

Hello @omarvasquez3355 and @duckgrow! I converted from protestantism to the Catholic Church. I spent 13 years in the reformed camp, and I do get the appeal. It is a very logical and systematic approach to theology. I won't tell my life story on here, but I have never been so spiritually alive as I am now as a Catholic. It is truly the fullness of the faith, and makes so much more sense of the whole faith and our lived experiences than the novel reformed tradition. I struggled with Mary like all converts do, but I am finding more and more peace with her and the Church's distinctives. I will be praying for both of you on your journeys.

Some of this is a matter of conceptual clarity (contingency vs. causation, etc). But as someone coming from a Protestant background I need some help answering this lingering question when family members ask: Why not just direct our words and requests toward the Father, Son, or Holy Spirit? This is more a concern of parsimony than about blasphemy concerns. Stated another way, what is the value-added of prayers to Mary or other saints? What he says around 29:05 may suggest that there is no value-added. So if I have 30 seconds or 5 minutes or 50 minutes to pray, why not go straight to the source and direct my petitions to the Father? The speaker here says praying to Mary is going to help our relationship with Christ if I understand correctly. But is that necessarily true for all believers? Finally, I think some Protestants would understand the occasional request to Mary. But it seems like a LOT to them in terms of actual ratio of time/prayers to Mary Any thoughts are appreciated

Joe, I want to thank you for bringing honest clarity to the Holy Scriptures. It’s apparent that many Bible studies have Protestant slants, which frowns upon the Apostolic by indefinitely removing the context, and spiritualizing the intended literal application. Simple Biblical doctrines that were universally agreed upon by the ancient Church, such as partaking of the Eucharist, reverencing Saints (yes, including icons), being water-baptized for the remission of sins to receive the Holy Spirit, and Apostolic succession just to name a few. Protestants think they can maintain a Church without Apostolicity, which is an impossibility. If one denies the core essentials of the faith, what’s left? Now, let me be clear: I’m not a Papist, but a classical Catholic-predating the innovation of Papal “supremacy.” I denounce certain “Catholic” dogmas, but reunification is the will of God, and thus, the highest priority of the Christian. For, without unification, what shall we say then?: “And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand.” - Matthew 12:25 And this is the folly of Protestantism, the assertion that the Church can simultaneously be divided yet withstand. No. Jesus is clear that “the gates of hell shall not prevail” against His Holy Church. Amen. P.S. Joe, what are your thoughts about the (Pre-Tribulation) Rapture? A prompt video study would certainly be enlightening-yes, I know, from a Catholic perspective.

As always Joe, your handling of these beautiful topics shows great reverence and respect to all. Mary as the revelation of the ark of the covenant is represented in the building of the ark in acacia wood. This in itself shows the amazing unique role that Mary was chosen for by saying yes. Acacia trees have an incredible relationship with an unseen life-force in their root system( mycorrizabacteria) this feeds the tree giving it extraordinary growth in harsh inhospitable conditions, hence in the middle east it is called the tree of life, not because of the tree itself but because of the relationship the tree has with its roots. Definitely something to ponder about Mary.

I really think that a huge problem lies in how we understand the English word ‘saved’. I remember trying to get a grasp on the etymology of ‘save’. I thought that English ‘save’ derived from Latin ‘salvare’. Also Italian, French, Spanish, and Portuguese have versions that look like they come from a Latin ‘salvare’. But when I looked for ‘salvare’ in my Latin dictionary it wasn’t there. My speculation is that the original Latin verb was more like ‘sublevare’, which eventually eroded down to ‘sulevare’ and commonly pronounced like the missing ‘salvare’. Anyway, the meaning of ‘sublevare’ would approximate ‘lift up’. And I find that substituting forms of ‘lift up’ for the corresponding forms of ‘save’ when reading, listening, or praying is very helpful to me. Thus ‘Jesus saves us’ means ‘Jesus lifts us up’. Or ‘Savior Jesus’ becomes ‘Jesus the Lifter Upper’. ‘Salvation’ becomes ‘Lifting up’. Of course, when the Son of God is the Lifter Upper He has divine power to lift us up out of sin and death and into eternal life. On the other hand, if the one doing the lifting is just the pilot of a rescue helicopter then the ‘saving’ may simply be a mundane process of rescuing a hiker out of a bad place in the woods. Finally when applied to Mary, we can ask her to lift us up to her Son in prayer. In that sense of the word using the verb ‘save’ in connection with her wouldn’t be idolatrous at all.
