*Can you make a saw blade that is a spiral?* (inspired by "nautilus gear", Google it) I think it would be too "extreme"/predictable to make a "full" "nautilus gear" saw-blade, (only the most outer teeth would engage). I think a better approach would be to make the spiral expand at "the rate of what depth one tooth SHOULD cut" = "1 unit", so from one teeth to the next, the radius increases by "1 unit" (however much that is?), it also rotates from the smallest radius towards the largest radius (so it doesn't collide with he wood, but actually cut it's way through the wood). You can probably compensate against the wobble that the changing radius creates, by making it a "edge-only blade" (like the "2 spokes" blade 9:30 ), but you continuously decrease the edge-thickens (radially) by a tiny amount, so the larger radius is a slight bit thinner edge than the smaller radius. Does this description make sense to you? I hope it does?

@@poshhippie6446 the hole should be, and often is... but the bolt itself is typically rolled, mass produced, and the head may or may not have any concentricity with the shank... threads are never used as locating features in proper engineering. discs/blades/cutters dont mount on the bolt itself, they always run on shoulders referenced to the shaft. and every cutter has to be sharpened/ground to within less than a thou of difference in radius per tooth otherwise only one does all the work...

I think the problem is he's lowering the saw by hand, when one set of teeth chop the wood, the next set doesn't take any because the saw hasn't moved down far enough yet, its taking off the material so if the saw itself isn't being lowered at a calculated rate with the speed of the blade then it's just not gonna take material off, I might be a dumbass but I feel like this might be a reasonable explanation

4:06 I dont think that the problem is the Waterjet or the saw itself but rather i think that its the speed at wich you are pushing down on the saw. I.E. You push down and the first tooth makes contact and cuts a piece of the wood, but because how fast the saw is spinning and how slowly you are pushing down the next few teeth are just gonna pass through that gap and not dig deeper.(sorry if my explanation is hard to understand English is my 2nd language)

1: 06 it's good to note that the radius does not stay the same for this shape, it's just that the opposite side of the triangle has an opposite radius, so if it was 10cm radius on one side, the other might be 5cm, and so if it were 6cm radius on one side, the other would be 9cm. this means that it is not always in contact with the plank unless you were to roll it like a cylinder

I really think a better saw set up would make a difference in your results. A lot of torque being applied to that handle, cheap saw body with a lot of flex. And that saw has been abused, the arbor is probably bent. Out of round could also be caused by the material expanding from heat as it's cut.

In accordance with your existing safety protocols, I suggest clamping a sharpening stone in place and very very very slowly lowering each sawblade onto it. This will shave down the high teeth on each blade, leading to a full set of working teeth, faster and higher quality cuts.

@svengalt9546 25 күн бұрын
It's probably just the arbor shaft of the saw and the arbor hole of the blade having too much play when mounted, causing the blade to hang unevenly on the arbor. His blades are probably symmetrical enough, but if those arbor diameters are not perfectly matched there will always be bias. Sharpening the blades to the an out of tolerance arbor just makes the blades out of symmetry, which would work for one test AS LONG AS the blade stays mounted between sharpening and testing.

or the camera is fast af and the "constant downpressure" isnt as constant as one might think. i do not think the blades are the problem since there is no problem the saw is running at a high rpm and we are watching something slowed down to a point where we can see teeth "miss". they are not missing its just the wood is already gone from that spot since saws are reductive on cuts.

Safety suggestion: you can get a long Bowden cable (think bike brake cable) and run that to a handle that you can control elsewhere. This would make it easier to hide behind something while also giving you more control of the cut. You could also do something similar with a pair of single acting pneumatic cylinders, but fill the cylinder and line completely full with hydraulic fluid, then you can do whatever you want with the lever. If you use cylinders of different diameters you can also play around with the leverage.

My suggestion for safety is to STOP making and testing these crazy designs before you (the guy in the video)get hurt. Current saw blades are the result of previous research and development, a knowledge of physics and material science. A correctly sharpened HANDSAW would give better results (except possibly in the coolness factor) than anything you tested and would be safer, although in your hands, I doubt anything would be truly safe.

I don't think it's the water jet, at least not entirely. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you watch real close starting at 15:22, you can see some shaft wobble. Edit: didn't read previous comments and a lot of people said the same thing lol.

Part of the teeth cutting on one set or one corner etc, the waterjet is a CNC machine. CNC interpolate curves making them close but not perfect to the cad drawing. To fix this you would have to use a saw blade sharping machine (grinder) that indexes around the centre hole (also probably not possible on some due to the shapes). Normally cutting tools have clearance side to side, even if it is the brazed carbide being a small amount wider that the steel blade body. Love the video and well done improving your safety :) Apologies if anyone has already commented the same or similar, not reading through nearly 1k to check :)

I have a theory that saw teeth don't cut constantly because when they make contact, there is a recoil, and you don't have full control of the advance of the saws.

here’s an idea for why it only removes material a little bit at a time: first contact removes a “chunk”, and the blade is spinning so much faster than you’re moving it downwards. if you want to see every tooth remove material as they swing by, you’re going to need to move downward much more quickly.
@TheLoneWolfling
@TheLoneWolfling 25 күн бұрын
The triangle blade only cutting with one tooth is probably due to the center hole being slightly oversized. If the triangle wanders slightly away from perfectly centered - which it will if able due to the vibrations - it'll be out of balance, which will pull it further off center, which will make it more off balance, rinse, repeat, until the triangle is as far out of balance as it can be while still being restrained by the center hole.

the reason the triangle blade was so bad was because of the tip geometry. the way it hits the wood, it's just a big flat face slamming into it instead of a small wedge chipping at it like a saw blade is supposed to be watch at 13:47 and pause and go frame by frame with comma and period
@cgrado
@cgrado 23 күн бұрын
The whole "One tooth connects, then the following don't" is likely related to the speed at which you're pulling the saw down. The front takes a chunk, if the saw doesn't move down fast enough, there's nothing at the same level for the following teeth to take, until the saw has been moved down far enough. A fully circular saw blade is the most efficient way of solving this problem, as it allows a very smooth angle of attack, versus a stepped one (on the blades with gaps). That's why number/size of teeth is a big component in how the blade cuts, even when fully circular. Even for the triangle, you could optimize the lowering speed to ensure each point of the triangle gets a small chunk on each pass (but probably not by hand).
@insertinsulthere488

Idea for the next video, design the "Sun Blade" with the teeth already on an angle (much like how it came out after cutting the wood) but add a ring around the outside of the blade maybe 1/2 to 1 inch from the teeth for reinforcement!
@maxcuevas1359
@maxcuevas1359 25 күн бұрын
Another reason for parts of the blade not touching is that you're removing material, meaning the next section has to travel further down to continue cutting the wood.
@ajiekc7501

about the fact that only half of the disk catches the wood. it seems that it's not about cutting with water, but about the saw, the axis on which the disc is placed, the outer contour of which is slightly offset from the center of rotation.
@ajiekc7501
@ajiekc7501 25 күн бұрын
Alternatively, when installing the disc, due to the fact that it is hanging, there is a gap from below between the hole in the disc and the saw shaft. thus, it turns out to be shifted at the bottom point further from the center.

It's because the saw is spinning faster than you are lowering it. You won't have a perfect amount of material removed with each consecutive tooth because the RPM is so high. Some teeth are just going to bite air
