Holy crap, in the UK just the regular annual MOT seems more comprehensive than the rebuild inspection in the US, as described here. Secondly, you got your sponsor money for the suspension, I would now get rid off the cheap coils, shock absorbers and the silly sensor delete modules and put back the original; 3 of them were just fine and you should be able to rebuild the 4th, it looked like just the shaft was bent. Lastly, dude, it's your car but seeing you rev to near 7k RPM when your temp gauge shows dead cold was excruciating to watch.
@rich_edwards795 жыл бұрын
Yes, I thought that about the inspection. But then, it"s not just salvage title stuff - even the toughest US annual inspections fall a long way short of the standards of our MOT test (which is in turn nowhere near as rigorous as the German TuV, for instance). And many states don't even check cars at all (other than sometimes for emissions or 'smog') which on the plus side means that there are a lot more classics running about over there because it's easier to keep them on the road, but also lots of 15-20 year old rusted out death traps. I have family on the East coast and can't believe the state of some of what people drive over there - holes in fenders, floors and rocker panels you can fit your fist through, hanging or missing trim exposing sharp edges, bumpers held on with zip ties. I'm doing a rolling resto of a tatty but solid 1982 Volvo 244 and even cosmetic rust spots on the doors (i.e. a non-structural panel) raised eyebrows here.

I'm very jealous of how easy it is to fix totaled cars in the US and probably other countries. Here in Norway all totaled cars have to be put together to the vehicle manufacturers specifications, which means having to buy the original plans and measures, having all the tools for making sure the car goes back to it's factory settings and measurements etc. Documenting everything and getting the receipt from an actual frame/bodywork workshop. So it's never, ever any forms of cheap to get totaled cars back on the road here.

Yeah I thought the same. Here in Denmark, they would strip the car completely down, and inspect everything thoroughly - twice!
@GoatFiddler5 жыл бұрын

The inspection is more of a safety inspection instead of a full inspection. They just want to make sure the car is safe for passengers, and for other motorists.
@pkuudsk99275 жыл бұрын
My thought too. Here in Canada , well in Ontario , it would have to go on a frame rack and be measured by a Certified body guy ( 5 years apprenticeship under a journeymen , more than 5 years certified working, and written test to get licensed) Then every dash light would have to be off and a full scan of the computer system's . Then it would have to go to a service shop and be checked ( by a certified automotive mechanic same 5 years and written test) for brake thickness and suspension wear , tire depth , alignment,exhaust leaks ect.... . All of this information would have to be documented and filed. This a joke inspection . I can't find any information as to what qualifications one would need to be a inspector in FLA other than filling out a 1 page form. Half the cars on the road are out of state on any given day but this is more of a Ray Charles look over than a inspection. I would never buy a car from Florida knowing this.
@Blazer02LS5 жыл бұрын
Depends a lot on what state you are in. Here that car would fail immediately with the CEL, TPMS and EPC lights on. Plus they do much more of an inspection. Normally you can expect an hour on the physical exam, and they run the paperwork down as well.
@ericbarnett67715 жыл бұрын
You should keep an OBD dongle in the car and load the Carista or Torque app on your phone. You can clear codes from the app for a little while, at least long enough for an inspection.

@muskokamike1275 жыл бұрын
@@JUST_ONE_ID10T taking it apart might not throw off the alignment unless he pulled out shims or ?? on the adjustments for toe in/out (tie rods), caster/camber. But you are right, since we don't know if that shock tower is in exactly (to the .04 mm) the same spot or if the bent part is back exactly where it is supposed to be. Where I live an alignment is $125 CDN or about $90 USD so even if it seems right, it's worth it to get aligned. Hell, those tires are probably worth $200 each and it won't take long to destroy one if your alignment is out.
@kisse19875 жыл бұрын
Here in Sweden you have to have your car inspected every year if it is older than 6 years i believe. If the car is an -04 or newer they plug in a computer to check for codes so basically no lights can be light on the dash or you will fail. They check the entire car to see if it is roadworthy and in working order.
@LycanWitch5 жыл бұрын
With all these videos about the actual rebuild of salvage cars and the inspection process.. one thing you always never talk about or mention which I am highly curious about is the stuff in the background related to owning the car, the one main thing I have always wondered about, what is the insurance process like to get a salvaged car insured? is it the same as a non-salvage titled car? Also what are the prices like to get insurance for a rebuilt salvage title car vs the same non-salvage title vehicle, is it more expensive for insurance? is it liability only? or are you still eligible to get full coverage if you want? Especially with how you mentioned at 5:06, essentially how cars get totaled out by the insurance company but the owners still want to keep the car so they just end up buying it back from the insurance company, so wondering if this "buy back" is really worth it if it turns out insurance premiums for a totaled out car is a lot more expensive and over time just isn't worth paying the extra costs to keep the vehicle insured vs if you just paid extra for a non-salvage used vehicle.. Also, how about the loan or credit process if you're not actually paying in-full upfront and instead using a finance company or bank to foot the bill. If a loan, do you have any issues with convincing or securing the loan/credit from the company when they find out it's to buy a salvage item? Are the rates reasonable and loan amount they are willing to finance to you pretty much the same as any other loan or are the rates higher and loan amount lower due to the risk? or is your credit and credit history so good, that they just don't care. Maybe you should do a video on these topics and anything else in regards to paying for a salvage vehicle and the cost of ownership after the purchase.
@Eric-zs6rd5 жыл бұрын
Don't buy cars with anything but clean titles. Insurance is a nightmare. Most mainstream banks won't approve financing on it.
@TheIKAIKAIKA5 жыл бұрын
Sam, there is this thing that surprisingly not a lot of people know. You see when the car gets into a serious wreck where airbags deploy, they change the airbag and clear the codes but the code on the dash still stays. The reason being is that during an accident not only does the airbags deploy but also the seat belt tensioners. Just like airbags, seatbelt tensioners will need to be replaced and 99% of the times the code or light on the dash will disappear on itself without needing to clear them.

For all those commenting on gas prices, it is about 3.60 a gallon in Los Angeles. However, the price for gas is expensive in Calfornia and it usually about 1 dollar cheaper in other places around the country. The funny part is everyone seems astonished about how cheap the price of gas is in the US. As for us living in the states, we consider 3.60 or even 2.60 per gallon expensive. From what I can recall, the price of gas hit $1 per gallon in Los Angeles around 1978 and that was full service

I love the R8 aluminum frame repair. Yeah, Audi wants you to replace the whole frame section including the top shock mount. But you know what.... You still have to weld the aluminum, and in this case you will have 2 to 3 welds... not to mention the section of frame from Audi is like $10,000 before labor if I remember right. After all is done you would likely have spent $17,0o0..... With your method, you just have one weld. And the Audi shop manual is just one suggested method. It's not the only way to skin THIS cat. I would totally trust that fix. I would have no problem taking my daughter with me in this car. That's how I judge repair quality. After inspection. I say to myself, would you put her in the car and feel safe. I would NOT put her at risk. EVER...
@JUST_ONE_ID10T5 жыл бұрын
It looks like a safe repair to me as well. I'd have no issue with it by looking at the welds. My brother is a welder( he welded barges for the river in Elizabeth PA.) and he watched the video and he also said they are good welds and he'd trust it as well.
@JUST_ONE_ID10T5 жыл бұрын
@@pakneger5878 you should talk to a welder. A weld is stronger then the metal around it. So this is stronger then factory. With that added plate it also makes it stronger then factory.
@scottcol235 жыл бұрын
@@pakneger5878 In case you didn't know. The reason it failed in the first place was because it was really really weak from the factory. So the repair is indeed much stronger than it was when new. It was a design flaw.
@allangibson84945 жыл бұрын
Welds are always weaker than the base metal. This is because the base metal is heat shocked by the welding process (particularly an issue for aluminium alloys). The weld needs to spread the load over a wider area than the original failure to accomodate this. This is also why aircraft are riveted not welded as rivets are inherently stronger.

While getting a salvage car and fixing it up sounds good on paper, if the deed/paper work for it says that it was salvaged due to it being in a crash of some sort, won't this have a big effect on what people are willing to pay for it...especially when the inspection cost is just $50 (I hope I heard that right) and frankly any type of dodgy repair work could have been carried out surely?

@@robbob8050 rofl where u coming up with these numbers? supercars or high perfomance cars are different than normal cars. look up any repaired supercar and you'll see that all of them are worth ~20% less than a clean title car. this car with a clean title and that low of a mileage is worth ~80k if not more and sam would probably get anywhere from 50k to 65k for it

@@billm1651 Well, per SocialBlade, Sam's earnings are between 3.4k and 54k per month, and from information from other prominent KZbinr's, they say the actual numbers are usually much closer to the high end, than the low end ... so essentially he has made more money off the video's about the car, than he has put into it.

Rebuild inspections are much easier down there by the sounds of it. Here the car has to be practically perfect. Any dash lights on are an instant fail. Suspension and joints are all thoroughly checked, Wheel alignment is done and must meet manufacturer specs, Brakes are measured, tires are measured, all lights and car functionality must work (wipers, windows, defrost, etc). Doors and compartments are all checked for proper closing and opening including the double stage closing of doors and hood. The whole process takes about an hour and half.

The reason why they need to see the light come on then off because some people take apart the odometer dash and stuff something in the way of the airbag light then put it back together so if you do have an airbag light you won’t see it at all.

Must be nice living in a country where rebuild inspection is just kneeing your car to see if nothing falls off, every other first world country would require a complete inspection of the sub frame and pretty much taking the car apart to see.

Not in the UK, it's the responsibility of the person fixing it to make sure it's up to standard and then up to any buyers to have it checked out by a professional to make sure it's safe. Unfortunately if it's reasonably hidden, even an MOT wouldn't pick it up (after a write off, it has to MOT'd to check it's roadworthy in general but they don't look specifically for the damage that was the cause of the write off, pretty much here if nothing to do with the safety of the vehicle is broken, i'e brakes, wheels, tyres, structural rot etc, it'll pass). All we have to do in the UK is apply for a new log book wen a a car is fixed and it's sent, even clone car checks have been abolished on non structural damage, however the type of write off will appear on a history check forever 'S' for Structural and 'N' for non structural. Even the VIC check is purely to make sure it's not a cloned vehicle, nothing to do with the safety of the repair. Laughable really. I think the reason there's not too much testing done is that here the value of a car gets hurt badly with a damage marker assigned to it as we have such a big used car market why bother taking the risk on a repaired car (obv people do buy them to save money) but most people avoid them like the plague.

It is half done. He didn't button everything up because he wanted to see if it would pass before going any further on the rebuild. He said as much in the video about tying up the loose suspension valve. That blue cable is part of the exhaust system he put in. It runs to the receiver at the dash (watch his previous video).

I was really surprised at how lax NCs salvage title inspection was, all they did was check to make sure the Vin was correct. I had a PA salvage title/certificate and only replaced the crash bar in the front (car had damaged bumper, hood, lf fender, both left doors). I didn’t care if the rest was repaired because it’s just a 10 year old beat around town car. Obviously NC doesn’t care if your car looks like crap as long as your vin is good.
