First, you should put a barrier between to make it more balanced. To make it that the poor can progress you can give them much less resources, also you could make the time limit smaller so the original disadvantage has more effect. Second, make sure there isn't angry villagers. Makes it incredibly hard for people to capture towns.

I think the biggest issue the geniuses had was the angry villagers. They couldn't take and hold towns so when they went in they just killed everybody instead of capturing the town itself.

In that case you would also need to change the victory conditions, because the victory conditions intrinsically require the control and variable group to interact with each other. A better experiment would be to set test and control against a adversary and separate both ecosystems so that there are no interactions between them. But there is less entertainment value in that.

Hey Mellon if you need a Worldbox video idea, I have one. Which one of these 4 ant species would win in a fight. Asian Marauder Ants, Fire Ants, Black Crazy Ants or Trap Jaw Ants. Each get their own traits.
