As the Olympic torch lands in Marseille, we ask whether Paris and its suburbs will benefit from the Olympics investments in infrastructure and be able to overcome the 'white elephant' syndrome. The same concerns were raised after Sydney hosted 2000 Summer Olympics. Since then, the huge stadium has been very active with hosting different footfall games, cricket and during the Aussie summer, pop concets draw huge crowds.

I do not expect worse chaos than usual in the transports in Paris. the city is used to welcome millions of visitors all year long. it may be that this time thes go to parts of the city they usually do not got to, but it should work. The avdantage is that the olympics are on public TV in france. the sports club all over france will show the event for their members. In term of soft power for france, these olympics are great.

Many of the Olympic infrastructures, starting with the village, are built on the edge of the worst suburbs of Paris, and probably France, an area at the fringe of society, ridden with poverty , crime, drug dealing, immigration issues... just name them. Will the olympic zone simply be a temporary ghetto of "normality"? Will the games really benefit the neighborhood and its population? Or will there be a gentrification that will simply move its population and its social woes somewhere else? As we say in French: "qui vivra verra" ("who lives will see)... miracles occur.

As always in France; the whole country; through its taxes; contributes to paying for infrastructures for already the richest part of France: the Ile de France. The regions, to which additional social spending has been added in recent years under Macron, will see even less of the public purse. And at the same time, "migrants" are being sent there because, understandably, it would be a blot on Paris's image during the Olympic Games.

A big share of the budget is taken in charge by Ile de France region, so it makes sense that most of the events take place there too.
